  • A bit of a collection of recent developments on my project. I have worked on a lower torso module. Redesigned the eyes to accommodate a camera internally. Also, put together a range of scripts for working with local LLMs for both vision and language processing.

    Nice hardware update I'd recommend swapping Llava1.5 (low accuracy, slow, and outdated) with Florence-2 as the image captioner (provides more detailed captions and phrase grounding output) for your chosen LLM instruct model. You can fine-tune Florence-2 model and write functions for to recognize you and other people. This might reduce latency to almost real-time for live-streamed vision, or you can use Llama-3.2 11B if real-time vision feedback and function calling isn't a priority right now

    Video streaming, even at very low (slide-show like) frame-rates, is pretty intense stuff for ESP32s.
    In the long run you would probably be better served by something like a StereoPi with two Pi "spy" (aka small) camera modules. Or even just two Raspberry Pi Zero with two of their cameras if that is cheaper.
    That way you would be able to even stream stereoscopic full-hd video real-time no problem, if you ever need to. But also just pull still images much quicker and with far less latency, if that's all you need.

    • @DaveMakes
      @DaveMakes  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I've got space in the skull cap for a raspberry pi 5 (or similar). So that is always an option. I will try the esp chip out first though. Even one frame every minute will provide very useful high level scene understanding. I was thinking to use one eye for high level analysis with a vision model, and the other eye for low level analysis with a faster model that simply does object detection. YOLO most likely. Lots to experiment with here.

Ideally, ENEM would analyse voice for emotion, parse the text spoken to infer emotion, analyse webcam image for emotion, collate those states in a database and seek patterns. It would be able to track users emotional states over time and enable development of individual tailored emotionally contextual responses... My top was having to route a single-lane CSI via a somewhat 10cm cable with 5 more routed, or 10+cm board path + somewhat 3cm cable, both configs proved to be reliable. Even tried 10+10, which proved to work (although didn't use this because of no practical need).

    I think an important improvement will be a redesign of the face and jaw; The lower third does not project forwardly enough, the face and jaw is angled too far downwards/inwards, the actual size of the jawbone is slightly too small compared to the skull, and the jaw is too narrow, which gives the teeth a crowded appearance. I recommend doing some in-depth research on face/skull references and especially the modelling industry to understand what is considered conventionally attractive or desirable in a face. Right now, the face looks disproportionate and therefore unattractive. The skull structure lacks harmony. You can find resources online that go into more detail on this - but essentially you want to hinge the whole lower section of the face upwards and forwards. Is there a way i can contact you and talk to you on this topic in more depth with image reference? Like an email address or a discord?

      Carl Jung suggests several different mental objects, one of which being "the shadow". I will create many different psychological modules to act as informants to the Ego, they will offer suggestions for the next action the robot should take. Right now the shadow is telling the robot that it should be sneaky. It could be suggesting just about anything though. Ultimately, what the shadow provides as advice is going to be itself informed by some situational awareness. Likewise with other objects like Id, Superego, or Anima - many other modules are possible to include.
      I can do a video about this in the future for a better explanation.

      I'm realizing that now after uploading. it's pretty incredible if so, the vision model is doing very well.

    Are you simply going through idle poses? why not IK solve them based on external inputs and state?

    • @DaveMakes
      @DaveMakes  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I've been constantly redesigning the robot from time to time. Changing motor positions, actuation positions/dimensions/relationships. I would like to set up an IK software control at some point but it hasn't seemed like an idea worth doing yet. Definitely necessary for more sophisticated motion planning.

    I am wondering what are you going to do to reduce the servos noise. I know, it's not a priority right now but I suspect they'll start to hit in the nerves after a while. Anyway, great job, looking forward for the next development!

      Brushless DC motors might work, but they’re pretty expensive, and would require a lot of redesigning.

    Fantastic update! I have to catch up with your videos, was quite ill since we last corresponded on here and didn’t have the bandwidth to truly appreciate the genius on display. Excited to see what you’ve accomplished.
    I’m currently working on a prosthetic gripper for my friend who had a stroke so that he can regain some functionality in his right hand. 3D printed with off the shelf parts. There’s some overlap between our projects so if you’d be willing to possibly let me pick your brain about my design down the line that would be fantastic. But I would totally understand if you are too busy :))
    Keep up the great work! 😊

      Happy to have a chat. I haven't done much with gripper design specifically, but I'm happy to help. Sorry to hear about your friends circumstance. only place I can really be found is on discord, discord.gg/sdR7hgfw

      @@DaveMakes awesome! I’ll hop on there. Thank you! 😊 I won’t bog you down with questions so no worries, just might have you look over my design and see if there’s any ways to improve upon it. And yea, the poor guy is only 60 years old. My mom is his caretaker and she told me about how he likes games and now I come over every Wednesday to play different miniature wargames (mostly OnePageRules GF Firefight due to his memory issues) it’s his favorite part of the week. He has trouble moving his guys around the right side of the board though so I’m looking at building a sort of glove/brace with modular attachments. One of those being a gripper style with a bit of a scoop for picking up miniatures by the bases and securely holding them until he needs to drop them off. I talked to him ahead of time and he is excited to try something like that out. I have experience building different robotic arms from scratch with just a 3d printer and off the shelf components but this will be my first prosthetic project. I’ll show you everything on your discord once I get a more solid design and maybe a POC prototype. :)) thanks again!
