I bought a home when I was 19. I liked vintage but didn’t love it yet. We gutted the blue bathroom and made modern. But my biggest regret was the 40s or 50s kitchen. We took down beautiful wallpaper, removed original lighting, painted beautiful wood cabinets and changed hardware, and worst of all laid granite tile over the original countertops. Looking back I would die for the that home in original condition:( I just didn’t know better and was young and wanted modern style.

Emily, it happens. My parents destroyed a pink and black tile bathroom in my childhood home. At the time, I was happy to see it go because I was embarrassed by how old it was and it compounded the feeling of bring poor and living in a tiny old house. Hindsight, I can appreciate and mourn the beauty of that old bathroom but it just didn't serve at the time. It was hard for my mom to keep clean and I'm pretty sure I remember that the tile was starting to crack in places. You did the best you could with the knowledge and resources you had! Your current bathroom looks cute and functional. Nice job!

Sometimes you have to be practical over nostalgic. I wouldn’t have kept stained things either. And the wall around the tub sounded really gross.

I love that you saved the vanity and hardware. We’re in a very similar situation, pink and blue tile bathroom with no shower. The tub is square and near the door, not in a spot where we could just add a shower head. It’s not functional for humans, but makes a good dog bath!

Everyone makes mistakes in their youth that aren't happy memories years later. It's totally understandable that you did what you thought was right at the time, and besides, what young girl buys a house at that age! You deserve worlds of credit for all that you've accomplished. You have a good eye for just the right collectibles for your new/old bathroom - it's beautiful! Your shower is almost maintenance free - a big plus. Your mint green was also popular in the 60's, and it all looks so fresh and clean. God bless you!! You've done a wonderful job, and I have a very critical eye. 😉

I grew up in a mint green and brown Formica bathroom. I loved ❤ everything about it and the entire beautiful home, since my late Parents built it by themselves. Unfortunately, I was forced to sale it, after my Father passed away. My siblings didn’t share the same love about it. The new owners tore it down to build a mansion. 💔😭 It will always be one of mine life’s major heartaches. 😔 I have the happy memories to look back upon.

I purchased my first home, a 1960s home, at 21 y.o. My husband and I tore out our bathtub for a remodel and instantly regretted it. Like your tub, it was extremely heavy. We did use it for a time as it was a 'soaker' size and retained heat, and I mistakenly thought all modern tubs were like that. If we could do it over, we would have had it 'refinished,' but we did not know there were businesses out there that refinished the old heavy tubs.

I feel your pain, pink bathrooms are very hard to put in now, plus they add tens of thousands to the house value as many of us know you can't get them anymore. I did a number of things when I was young and didn't know more about the consequences, wish I could take them back; but what I do is try to save as much from milk-paint and landfills as I can, even if I can't use it I know where to find people who will treasure old things, and maybe someday someone will gift you with a lovely colored bathroom trio and you can have that vintage bathroom ; ) Your channel is always a delight, and I am sure this video will save many pink/blue/green/yellow bathrooms. It was good and brave of you to share your mistake.

Emily, your entire house is adorable. I would’ve ripped out the pink fixtures as well, and I LOVE pink. If it’s stained or broken, it may cost a heck of a lot more to restore it. We had a metal claw foot tub growing up and my Mom replaced it. That for me, was a HUGE mistake. Oh well.

I was in your old bathroom before you renovated and this is so much better! Just because something is vintage, doesn't mean it's always great - especially when you're talking cracked sinks and old toilets (hooray that you didn't make a planter out of your pink toilet in the back yard - haha!). I absolutely love your renovation - it's fresh and has plenty of vintage vibes! - Love you, Mom

    • @emilyretro

    • @kmom452
      @kmom452 ปีที่แล้ว

Aww love that your Mom has your back.❤ Honestly I probably would have done the same thing in my very early 20's. Even if you had known what your future style would be it would have cost more to preserve that look then what you could afford at the time. At the age of 20 my greatgrandma gave me her Japanese stoneware dishes with orange and yellow flowers. At the time I thought it was hideous and only used it for a short time until I could afford something new. I didn't think about how I wouldn't have my sweet grandma forever and I never would have known that yellow and orange would evolve into my two most favorite colors to decorate with. Lesson learned.

First if all..why would anyone be rude??? Can't wrap my head around it!!! Had a similar situation...1935 house...bathtub...no shower...no tile or backsplash around tub...also, it was original tub...kept tub, added new plumbing and tile backsplash...it had to be done...it was just a messy, mushy, sad looking bathtub area. Sometimes it is just necessary!!! Oh, and by the way...your new/old bathroom is adorable!!! 🚽🚿🛀🛁💚🏡

I think you did GREAT!!! I love the mint bead board and wonder if you could pick up more of that color in a few places to make the color more purposeful…maybe in a sheet shower curtain (as someone suggested) with some flowers of that color…this will probably be unpopular, but I think the mirrors painted that color could make the whole sink area look like a 50’s bathroom design magazine ad 🤷

Bathrooms need to be fresh and water resistant. Toilets need to be efficient. If tile is cracked and the backing spongy etc then you can only do so much. Dirty old fixtures sometimes just have to go. You can buy a pink tub again or just paint it all pink sometime. It's cute as it is now.

Emily, I love your bathroom! I love the mint bead board and the ledge you made and the lazy Susan. I especially like the planter on the lazy Susan for your toothpaste, so cute! In our first house, we too destroyed a white cast iron tub. We had three small children we bathed all the time in it and it was old, scratched and stained so it looked gross and felt unclean for our babes. My dad came over after the fact and just made us feel like crap for destroying it and I felt worse when my friend told me they had theirs painted to look new. Oh well you live and learn. At the time we just wanted something new and clean looking and I didn’t even think of painting it.

Really, with the weight of that thing? How would you have done that? Pay the plummers more money and transport?? Its not realistic. You kept what was beautiful, the vanity. And the rest was really nothing worth breaking your head over. Forget it let it go, and rest in peace. ❤🕊

I think the less expensive options for flooring and counters make so much sense and look so good as well! I'm so glad you shared. Hi Jamie! I’m so glad you found it inspiring!!! 🥳 90s oak trim and cabinets were in my parents house and they painted it all white. You could always paint a fun color too. I sat with my wood doors, trim, and closets for a long time and once I incorporated vintage pieces the wood look actually grew on me (and maybe it would for you with the right styling). But if you hate wood definitely give it a paint ☺️

Hahaha the ponds aren’t vintage they’re new from the store. I use them daily 😂😂😂 But I agree they’re vintage inspired! And so true, hindsight is 20/20 ☺️💕

I like your upgrades. It's much more functional, cleaner, and yet still conveys a vintage vibe. Some things just need to be upgraded. 22 year old Emily was a smart woman. 🙂

I actually found the lazy Susan at a goodwill in south haven when I went down there for the day ☺️ It’s a cutie!
