The problem I have with most Kaiju movies is how easily they fall into having the monster stuff making the human story so irrelevant and pointless or at best to only have some influence on the monster scenes. The humans largely being expositional devices that explains things and act as filling whilst we wait for the big expensive monster fights. What pacific rim did right despite all its flaws was actually get the humans involved in the big fights by having them pilot giant robots that can go toe to toe with the kaiju. Thereby making the human storyline and the action scenes complimentary and dependant to eachother.
I think New Empire is a step in the right direction by placing a heavier focus on the kaiju story. Kong's plot was simple, but I think it was effective. Humans are mostly just there for exposition.
@@cordyceps182too bad they downgraded the kaijus in terms of their actual character. Kong was the only redeeming quality of this movie, and I say that as a MonsterVerse Godzilla fan.
But that is a challenge to overcome surely? I would point to the original Alien, Predator, Jurassic Park and Terminator movies. The monster was the stand out star of the show but we all know and love the human characters because they were so real, multilayered and memorable. Their presence kept the fantastical elements grounded and believable. A human character in a Kiju movie could keep the audience in mind of the scale and stakes at play. I think Cloverfield pulled this off. But it takes a creative writer drawing from their life experience with friends and family to achieve this, not a boardroom of number crunchers
I can enjoy monster movies, i loved the old Godzilla, even the black and white ones. But he's right about the human drama. They started putting way too much drama in them, it pads the runtime and saves money on animation I'm sure, and it usually makes the whole movie stupid. Watch monsters fight for a few seconds, then listen to a married couple that you don't care about argue stupidly over nonsense for an hour. Btw, the argument happens when everyone's lives are at risk.
THATS WHAT THE FANS HAVE WANTED. this movie was made for fans that just wanted the focus to be on the monster battles. Godzilla can have more dark and mature films as well as the ones that are just fun monster battles. godzilla is 70 or 80 years old and is the longest going movie franchise in history. the dude who made this review saw minus one and now all the sudden thinks he can tell fans what to like and enjoy
Godzilla is a franchise with a ton of variety concerning its tone. From the serious tone of the original, Minus one and Shin Godzilla or the campy, ridiculous films of the showa era.(The original Godzilla vs King Kong.) I'd argue that the many shapes and forms that a Godzilla film can take is exactly what makes Godzilla such an enduring figure. You're right Godzilla x Kong is not a great film, but its great fun. The appeal of the Monsterverse for me is seeing Godzilla get a Hollywood size budget and acceptance from mainstream audiences. We've come a long way since Suitmation(which I love) and Godzilla 1999. I still think the Monsterverse captures the "spirit" of the franchise. Seeing Godzilla 2014 in theaters with my father who introduced me to the films is something i'Il remember forever. As an adult do I prefer/appreciate more thoughtful entries in the franchise? Absolutely! But as a life long Godzilla fan. This is par for the course and because of the Monsterverse, Godzilla is at peak cultural awareness. Which means more films both good and bad. It's hard not to be a happy Godzilla fan right now between the Monsterverse entries and the stellar Toho entries. There's really something for everyone, and I think you illuminated that perfectly by explaining your respect for Minus One and Disdain for Godzilla x Kong. But I respect your take.
The whole "I liked this movie" vs "this is a good movie" argument is something that a lot of people genuinely cannot wrap their heads around. Those are not the same things!!!!!

Literally no one has said the MonsterVerse is “so bad it’s good,” they offer a lot to millions of people across the world. Also, it’s extremely telling that you keep calling the clear Vietnamese cast that play the Iwi’s as “Indians” is a clear message that no one should be listening to you.
I don't think "they see art differently" it's a good way to put it. It's more "they see value even in what isn't necessarily art". I liked the movie, I don't think it would be unfair to say it isn't art, at least from a filmaking perspective, but it is good entertainment.
If you hear the phrase “magical quantum Indian people” and your response is “uhm, acktchually, they’re magical quantum VIETNAMESE people,” you are the definition of a Monsterverse fan. The synonym for Monsterverse fan begins in R and ends in D.
One thing that I've seen nobody bring up when discussing the movie is the Kong Kong side of the story, despite this being more of a King Kong movie than it is a Godzilla movie. King Kong, from the character's very beginning, has always been about entertainment and escapism. Just joining the characters along for the ride to explore this fantastical new world. And it's always been that way whether it be in the near 1 to 1 remake that was Peter Jackson's King Kong, or in the absolute insanity that was King Kong Escapes and The King Kong Show from 1966, which this is more in line with. As well as that, Kong has always been amongst the most personality filled characters of the genre, always feeling the most human of them. And this takes that part of him to a head by making us follow him. Kong is the central character here, and as such, his human aspects. His isolation, his loneliness, but also his compassion and sympathy, the parts of him that made him stand out from many other monsters, including Godzilla, are allowed to shine in full force.
This is actually a good point: I watched the original King kong and I couldn't help but feel like it was the "ancestor" of the modern blockbuster. It does have a message shoehorned at the end, but the movie itself is very much just an excuse to watch people wandering an island full of dinosaurs and then an ape breaking shit up.
Even Japanese audiences loved this movie. They recognized its dumb nonsense but it was fun and that was all that matters. Not every movie needs to be some cinematic masterpiece, especially after Godzilla -1 dropped a few months ago. Most of the OG Godzilla movies were schlocky nonsense and we still love them.
Godzilla X Kong is literally the second least viewed live action Godzilla film in Japan to date. I enjoyed the movie too, but Japan doesn’t show all that much love to the monster verse

@@Nokaret HAHAHA
@@CobbleBompster Don't really see how they "downgraded" the others.
What is that even supposed to mean anyway? It's not like they changed them.
@@CobbleBompster They placed a lot of emphasis on Kong, but I thought Godzilla going around and killing a bunch of monsters was fun.
I can enjoy monster movies, i loved the old Godzilla, even the black and white ones. But he's right about the human drama. Watch monsters fight for a few seconds, then listen to a married couple that you don't care about argue stupidly over nonsense for an hour. Btw, the argument happens when everyone's lives are at risk.
I like how they dropped all pretense and turned the monster fight into a big dumb wrestling match for the target audience.

Godzilla is a franchise with a ton of variety concerning its tone. From the serious tone of the original, Minus one and Shin Godzilla or the campy, ridiculous films of the showa era.(The original Godzilla vs King Kong.)
I'd argue that the many shapes and forms that a Godzilla film can take is exactly what makes Godzilla such an enduring figure.
None of Platoon's arguments have anything to do with tone. Its badly written.
