I have two of these winches and I have been searching for info on how to break down my winches. Your beautifully filmed video is a godsend. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thanks for the post! I took both my genoa winches off the boat, because I could not see how the main shaft comes out and some tapping on the gear pin did not seem to convince it to move. Time for some bench work.
Thanks for this video! It saved my sanity when I was trying to disassemble my winches, which look exactly like the ones in the video, but all the documentation I could get from Lewmar didn't match. I got a kick out of how you said they were "prehistoric"! But someone at Lewmar Tech Support in the UK just emailed me the service manual for them! Service manual Vol. 1. If you want a copy let me know and I'll send it to you.
hello, your video was very interesting for me. I have the same winch but one of the two upper pawls is broken. If i am not wrong there two couples of pawls both different. Any idea where to get those? In the new repair kil lewmar no body can tell me if those are the same size and shape....Thank a lot if yoy have some piece reference number. Thanks thanks!
I use a old crock pot to help degrees such parts. I use a solvent and on low heat cook the parts for six hours. Then I rense the part in some fresh solvent. It really works good. BTW do the parts cooking in a well ventalated space (outside is better).
Hard to spin through half a turn sounds pretty weird! I imagine you'll find some sort of huge gob of old grease that has hardened up on one side of the main shaft.
Lewmar 40 2 speeds of around the same vintage - almost identical except the splined piece that holds those two bottom cogs gets punched DOWN instead of up. (At least it’s does on mine.). The clearance with the spindle bearings is insufficient to punch up so I guess they just flipped it over.

Glad we could help Peter! Good luck getting your winches fixed up.

Nice video Tate.
I have a winch (different type) I need to service as it gets hard to turn half of the spin.
