30:00 You can also select all screws, then use the "Randomize Transform" tool to rotate them on a specified axis, as well as randomize the scale and position if needed.

Good Tip! I didn't know that one. Thanks for sharing.

It's enjoyable to watch your modeling videos. Instrument panels are an aera I am especially interested in. I have been modelling aircraft for the flight simulator games and the instruments and interiors are obviously important as the players spend most of their time staring at it.
It's impressive how clearly you show the methods to get prescision along with good topology. We can all follow that method and try to improve. I look forward to your next video.

This video shows how I make the instruments:

      Is that what you needed?

I didn't get why you needed an empty for the screw.

    • @Mark_Alloway

It isn't really an empty. It just looks like one because it is a Collection Instance. Right about here (th-cam.com/video/YSkrlr4pQls/w-d-xo.html) I start talking about putting the original screw-head into a collection so I can make lots of copies of it via Collection Instances. Once the screw is in its own collection, I can make lots of copies of it by creating Collection Instances. The new instances don't use up any memory since they all use the same data. This lets me create lots of copies without any memory penalties.

@@Mark_Alloway Has this changed in Blender 3.3? When I experiment with collection instances, I don't see any axes that look like empties where I add instances.

I don't think it has changed. Two things you might want to check:
      1. It may be that the axis are very small and you can't see them. This would be related to the scale of your objects and scenes. If you select the object and click on the Object Data Properties tab, you'll see a "size" value you can adjust to make the axis bigger or smaller.
      2. Another possibility is that the collection instance isn't getting created where you think it should be....
When you create a collection instance, its origin is based on the location of the original object in world space. If you created your master object anywhere other than at the world origin, your collection instance objects will be created with a built-in offset equal to the distance your master object has from the world origin. Is your master object at the world origin?

@@Mark_Alloway Ah, you are right. The empty happened to be exactly the size of the sphere object I was instantiating so it was hidden... saw it when I turned on X-Ray mode.
