    I've been knocked down on the great lakes and it was a frightening experience. High winds ahead of a thunderstorm caught me completely off guard. I never want to see a micro burst after that experience. Looking forward to your video and watching how a master handles the crisis.

      What type of sailboat was it? Did you suffer any damage? Where did the knockdown occur?

    • @burtvincent1278
      @burtvincent1278 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coronado 25. We were coming into port Bay City Michigan. I did several things wrong. Started the engine my inexperienced brother was on the tiller. I raised the swing keel, dropped the jib and hooked the boom onto the aft stay in preparation for dropping the main sail since I had no topping lift at the time. The wind struck off our starboard beam and knocked us down. I was hanging from the aft stay and my brother was standing on the port rail. The mast and main was bouncing off the water. As she was trying to right herself the gusts would knock her back down. Hanked onto the aft stay there was no releasing the boom. I screamed to my brother to turn into the wind. When it bobbed up and the rudder entered the water it turned and immediately weather vaned into the wind popping back up. The Coronado will right its self up to 120 degrees from vertical which means the mast would be 30 degrees underwater requiring a combination of wind and waves to get there. We apparently had 30 degrees to spare.😊😊

    I've heard the Contessa 26 described as a "wet boat", as in you get pretty wet on board. Any thoughts? Also, could you expand a bit on the companionway with the portholes? I assume this was a later alteration? Thanks.

    • @adamcue6529
      @adamcue6529 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that whole "doghouse" is an addition. The factory companionway is simply an arched opening, and doesn't have a sliding hatch overhead as found on most sailboats.
      I believe I remember him going over the modification in the first or second episode.

      SV Chineel, Junk-Rigged Schooner Sailing . No no. Not Vaseline as it’s a petroleum based product and it attacks some rubber . Use a rubber lube to be on the safe side.

    • @flyingdutchman6984
      @flyingdutchman6984 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Use whatever you want as it will have virtually no effect, good or bad, on EPDM synthetic rubber diaphragms. Vaseline use to be an easy way to destroy real rubber o-rings, seals, and diaphragms. Since real rubber is rarely used anymore you will have to find new ways to destroy o-rings, seals, and diaphragms. 😁

      ...didnt see an answer to this as yet, but I would say he has a de ice w an alarm that let's him know when a boat is within 10 miles. Re debris, I think the sailor is suppose to get up and look outside about every 20 minutes, even if it means waking up 3 times an hour to check things out. Not sure everybody does that. Maybe Wave Rover will chime in.

      I've crossed the Atlantic on a Sunbeam 36, there were four of us aboard so our time was divided by watches, but in all honesty the only time you sleep is due to total exhaustion, because of the movement of the boat rolling around sleep is more or less impossible, crossing oceans on a small sailing boat is not a pleasure cruise in the slightest, and it's not for the faint hearted, five weeks at sea is incredibly hard

    Your Mk 3 gear is really great. I'm about to fabricate my own similar system for a 44' steel boat. One thing I have been wondering about...what do you do with the trim tab when the vane isn't in use? Is it just left to float around in any direction the water pushes it?

    • @flyingdutchman6984
      @flyingdutchman6984 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of people try fishing off the back of sailboats, but are usually unsuccessful. Most trolling on the ocean is done in the 9 knot range while Wave Rover would probably struggle to get over 6 knots. It is simply too slow to interest most ocean fish. It can be done, but the success rate will be so low it may not be worth the effort to most sailors.

    • @adambrickley1119
      @adambrickley1119 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're single handed you can only use 1 manual pump at the time. 1 more pump = more holes in the hull more hose etc. Its only 4 or 6 screws and two hose clips. The diaphragm allways fail.

    Allen, Is it hard to capsize a boat of this size?

    • @RoversAdventure
      @RoversAdventure  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A small boat like Wave Rover is a good candidate for capsize while on the ocean. One must always keep one's wits about themselves and have everything stowed to help mitigate the chances of even more damage post capsize. One then has to put their mind to surviving and continuing post capsize if possible.

    As I said in comments in a prior episode... no primary/secondary electric bilge pump? Why? They are cheap and will alert you to a problem early.
    Yeah I know, “it’s your boat... so piss off.” You’re doing the singlehanded crossing and I’m a chicken shit and will never have the guts to do what you’re doing.

    • @flyingdutchman6984
      @flyingdutchman6984 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A bilge pump is used to clear nuisance water from the bilge. A crash pump is used to clear the vessel of water in the event of a crash that has breached the hull. In my opinion his bilge pump is sufficient, but he really should install a crash pump.

    • @delukxy
      @delukxy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      An electric pump is fine if you have enough power for it at the time you need it. No engine or generator here, just solar. Even with power you really need a manual one available. This one looks to be efficient, when it is working!
