TRICK OR TREAT? Sam is a mythical and ancient deity created to protect the traditions of Samhain and other celebrations of the autumnal harvest. By understanding these ancient traditions, we can get a better idea of why Sam exists and why he does what he does. But what exactly is this mischievous Halloween spirit and how deep does his history go? What does he do for the rest of the year?
In this video I'll be exploring the entire history of Sam, from the movie Trick 'r Treat to the various comics and short films he has appeared in over the years.
I'll also go over the real-world creation of Sam by writer-director Michael Doherty, how he came to be the way he is, and what the future may hold for this now widely celebrated Halloween mascot.

I love how Sam isn't a typical evil villain. He can be your best buddy, or your worst nightmare if you break the rules.
Yup he’s evil imagine not knowing the rules and just wanna dress up and boom ur dead
Or both if you try to take Sam in bed.
@@andy56dukybro he's got the body of a child, I don't care if he's thousands of years old he still has the body of a child.
@sammco6704 Yeah, someone call Chris Hansen. 🤢🤮
I can be your angle or devile
Sam is the best and most adorable horror monster ever, for me at least. He's so monstrous, but still so sweet, I adore the little shorts made over the years too. I'm so glad CZ is covering him :D
I agree he is so cute and adorable but scary and mischievous at the same time
I think he's adorable too. He's just like, respect the season people and don't skimp on the candy. 🎃👍
YES! I wanted to make a costume of him. Its so cute
Bother
i agree 100 percent, love the little guy
Sam should be the official mascot for Halloween, perfect for the role
He’s too cute😂❤❤❤❤
Michael wouldnt be too happy about that
@@camron147 😅😅😅
@@camron147 Honestly, I never thought he captured the spirit of Halloween. This might be a hot-take, I don't mind being in the minority.
I almost equate it to Die Hard being a Christmas movie, like...kinda? It's a Christmas-time setting, I wouldn't say that makes it a Christmas movie; same for Halloween (despite the name).
@@camron147 Michael Myers doesn’t really fit to be a mascot for Halloween sure he kills when it’s Halloween but that’s it because his more of a boogeyman than a killer on Halloween to be honest
It's a shame Trick 'r Treat is so underrated. If there is a sequel, hopefully the original gets more attention.
Maybe it needs an evil Robo Santa?
You know i don't think it should these days evey movies even bad ones have sequel and complicated lore so if you just want to spend time with your friends and family, instead of trying to understand complicated lore you can just watch a scary movie
@@dubuyajay9964if this is a creeped out reference i will cry from joy that somebody watched this show
Personally I never heard of it but when I finally saw it, I thought it was one of the coolest horror movies ever. The intertwining story lines was a seriously unique idea
@@TTTV2024 Sorry, Futurama. :(
not fun fact: “changlings” were normally babies with genetic disorders (ie, down syndrome etc) that affected their physical appearance, and because medical science wasn’t was it is now they thought that “their real kid” was swapped at birth with a “changling” it’s actually really sad
Not “normally” and that’s just a theory.
@@maddieb.4282 true 🤷
@@maddieb.4282I was going to say the same thing. I hate when people pass off theories as fact.
13:45 “I’d rather be a monster than a man like you.” I cannot express in words how much I love that line.
Seems a bit odd for Sam to put up Jack-o-lanterns outside Krieg’s home, since they are protective. But it may be a bit of mercy, given he did celebrate a bit, or just telling the other spirits, “This one is mine.” Either way, his goal was to aggrevate Krieg, and he did.
I believe since he had upheld the tradition of giving candy in the flash back but was interrupted by the child driving them off a cliff, Sam gave him a chance to get back the spirit of Halloween before it was to late like the creator states. But he doesn’t. And in a twist of fate, after Sam tries to m*rder him, because his lilli-knife stabbed the candy, the character was spared. That line though was great though.
It's really unsettling with the contrast of cute to horrifying with Sam. And I can't help but love him for it. It's also rather refreshing, as others have pointed out, how he's not just some other supernatural powerhouse or a mindless serial killer. Instead he's just a spirit upholding traditions and it's nice seeing him be friendly to those who keep to that tradition. Here's hoping this video can help the movie, character, and franchise grow in popularity.
This gives me an idea what if Sam is a kid from the first ever celebration who died and makes sure the festival stays celebrated
As a bonus on the dvd, they had a short animation with Sam’s story…it was bullies.
@@audreysmith6221 ah … I think I’ll just mine as a head cannon

what if sam is Jack.S as a kid when he was alive, maybe or something
Sam is my favorite Horrormovie-character, simply because he is something different, original instead of just another supernatural monster or emotionless serialkiller

I agree 100% it is the best Halloween movie

It did so good to connect 4 separate storylines. Felt like a better scary stories to tell in the dark. *it’s been a while so I don’t remember either vividly*
Horror trivia...... The little boy peeking through the dressing room curtains during the "werewolf" segment is the kid playing Sam!!
I'm working at spirit halloween this year and I get to see a lot of different people who just really love halloween and it's adorable
I met Sam's #1fan the other day, an elderly woman who was buying so much merch. She said it was her favorite film and she knows her husband might be tired of it but she still wanted to buy as much Sam as we had. Aside from going on about how adorable he was she also went on to say that she loved the werewolf scene
I love meeting elderly horror fans
My elderly neighbor loves Halloween but he got to old to decorate so I always give him a pumpkin from my garden or a small ghost decoration every year for all those years he gave me candy.
As an Irishman who was actually BORN on Halloween and honours the Samhain traditions of old, Sam would probably be my best friend.
I think I recall an animatic where Sam is terrorizing somone on Xmas, before Krampus comes in and chases him out by whacking him with a broom, like shooing a naughty child off of his turf.
The fact that they’re aren’t more full length Halloween movies featuring this character is a travesty.
I will be honest, someone says "Open the ancient burial mounds" I'm saying sorry i'm sick that day.
This is one of the most underrated Halloween Horror of all times. It is slept on on so many levels. Sam is one of my favorite characters and I love the stories and how they all connect.❤❤
Why are sooo many people saying this in these comments? What make's you people think Trick R' Treat is underrated? Because it definitely isn't. Sam has some of the most merch I've ever seen of ANY horror character. He's mainstream. I know sometimes fan's like to believe that what they like is "underground" and they like it that way, but this film isn't one of them lol.
This movie is highly underrated and doesn't get the credit it deserves!!! 🎃👻
I've been waiting for a sequel to this for years. It was announced a decade ago and has been in development since last year, but hasn't been officially greenlit.
Factor in the strikes and who knows if it will ever actually happen. It's a shame because this movie is a gem. The School Bus Massacre is my favorite segment from it.
Personally, I wish they'd just not. Sequels are never as good and most of the time, they're not even just ok. They always end up making the franchise look stupid, and the attempt just comes off as desperate and all for the money. Obviously, it is all for the money because it's a business, but damn, just no! lol
I don't even understand how they'd do a sequel. Just make another random horror anthology and shoehorn Sam in there? I mean, I guess that could be ok, but seems like it'd be your typical Tales from the Crypt, Creepshow, Tales from the Darkside, etc... with Sam wedged in there.
@@TooBokoo look into the comics man all but 1 are mentioned in the video.
@@TooBokooSam is kinda wedged in the original anyway
I wouldn’t mind a prequel adaptation of days of the dead
I can’t be the only person to think Sam is absolutely ADORABLE! I feel like part of it is that, yeah, he looks like, and has the mannerisms of (aside from murderous thoughts) a regular 5 or 6 year old… ok, and that costume is kinda cute. Makes me think of a “little brother or cousin we all had”
Wish there was more media available with Sam... More movies, comics etc etc a better franchise than the current batch of shite exorcist and 'halloween' movies. Sam is a character that we can all love🎃🎃🎃
People said the same thing after Halloween 1 and 2. Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street... etc. The more content you put out of ANY character the more watered down and repetitive it get's. What make's you think Sam wouldn't end up in the same position if we got way more of it like you want?
@@RemmyRiffs i can see your point but Id just like to see more of him. A bit more exposure. Maybe another movie but not 10 of them. I went to see the new Scream movie and I can't remember a thing about it 😂
@@boris1387 Lol, agreed.
There's the Trick R Treat sequel coming up.
@@popermen694 yeah I've literally just read😁🎃
I'm from Ireland and have an unnecessary love of Irish culture/traditions, especially anything to do with the dead. My level of delight that CZ got everything pretty much right has made me so happy! 😭
One thing is that sídhe doesn't have a direct English translation! It normally is used to mean fairy or fairy mound (which is another term used for burial mounds)! 🥰
O' Hallow's Eve is actually October 30 and Samhain/Halloween October 31 and then finally All Saints Day when the spirits that celebrated with the living go back behind the vail
Thank you very much for doing your research on how to pronounce Samhain, as an Irish man, I have to say that I really appreciate it.
Sam is one of my fave halloween "protagonists" i mean yeah he does kill people but its not that hard to have the halloween spirit and making it out alive. I am Mexican/Honduran born in the states and truth be told, i was more influenced with Mexican culture since i found i was half like two years ago. Anyways, Dia de Los Muertos has always been a big part of my life and something i always look forward to more than Halloween. Its a beautiful tradition that brings our community together by remembering our loved ones even more. This holiday helped me to realize that Death shouldn't be feared as its part of life (as long its not brought upon by a living being). For a celebration thats all about Death, its brings such comfort and it does make some people uncomfortable. Some people look at Santa Muerte is a deity that is used by bad neighborhoods who practice dark rituals and affiliated with cartels which sadly tarnished our Lady of Death's image. She is a deity that protects, brings good health and wealth, and guides our loved ones to the afterlife.
What im saying is that i think Sam would love this celebration. He is a deity who watches over October festivities. Its also amazing how many different cultures have different celebration during this time of year and have some similarities. Its truly amazing.
All things considered, for me personally, the fun never ends this time of year. I was born and raised on Halloween and my godfather is Cubano. So I get the best of both worlds. I love Dio de Los Muertos!
One of my favorite horror movies !! Especially around Halloween !!
Charlie broke the rules, by taking other kids' candy, and by smashing jack-o-lanterns. Consequently, he decided that Wilkins was doing his job for him.
I've often tried to explain the rituals of Halloween to people after watching Trick or Treat and no gets it until hopefully now. I will refer anyone who is looking for lore on Halloween to this video. Awesome awesome awesome job.
I like to imagine that Sam is actually some unfortunate kid who got one of the mask from that Factory from Halloween 3: Season of The Witch 😂🎉
Happy Samhain to those who still celebrate it by that name like me
Samhain and Yule are the only seasonal festivities I DO celebrate.
Happy Hallows Eve, Sam! Another great Horror History episode, just what we need.

Aww I love sam. I heard theyre finally doing another. Can't wait
CZsWorld has been on fire with horror histories recently
Trick r Treat was such a great horror movie for it's time! If I remember correctly the ending had Mr.Kreig hand out candy after his attack from Sam only for the kids from the Bus crash come back to him. Another great video, hoping for that sequel for this movie!
OMG, I literally did a comment where I mentioned asking to cover Sam on Horror History a month ago. Didn't know it would end up becoming a reality. Thank you Zac. 🎃🕷️🕸️🐈⬛🦇🖤😈🍭👻💀
2:15 Hanon-Etudes for piano. 😂 True horror for any neighbour when practiced.
I love the fact that a kid actually dressed up as a devil john at the end of the haunting of jake and Sam segment,I know it’s off topic but still a cool Easter egg.
I’m dressing as Sam for Halloween this year, this video came at a perfect time!
I wanna see!
Hell ya just watched this again the other day it’s a Halloween staple for my house hold !
It’s kind of cute that Sam is having a snowball fight with the little girl
I still love how Rhonda, the clearly coded autistic girl, was the one to survive
Me too. I was thrilled when she lived.
I like the theme of sam about embracing the weird in order to have better understanding of the world
One Of The Most Underrated Horror Movies In My Opinion
I noticed that Sam cut the old man's calf like how the baby from pet semetary cut juds ankle
You know it’s a banger video when we get Loomis yelling SAM HAIN!!!!!
Out of any Halloween creature that ever existed, I relate to Sam the most.
Oh my goodness; I totally didn’t know this would be uploaded ^^
For some reason sam has always made me feel happy when I see him..I absolutely love him!!
This movie always gets me into the Halloween mood like no other Halloween movie.
I just bought the blu-ray (new) at Goodwill for $3.99. It was probably one of the best Halloween movies I've seen in years and years. (If not, the best). I plan on watching it every Halloween from here on out.
It’s amazing that Netflix hasn’t jumped on it for an annual 45 min special for Trick R Treat
When I was a kid we used to carve turnips (actually a swede or rutabaga in the US) at Halloween to carry around with us when we went 'Halloweening'. Pumpkins and Trick or Treating didn't become popular (in my area of England at least) until I was too old for it but pumpkins are sooooo much easier to carve than a turnips! x
Thank you CZ's world for doing this video on one of my favorite horror characters of all time. It's safe to say that Sam is iconic and adored by many. Hope you are having a great spooky season Zack.🎃🤘
Love your horror history videos! I've been watching for a little over 3 or 4 years now and I just can't get enough of them!!
I love trick r treat I only saw it this past year and Sam is both adorable and everything I love about the holiday. It’s basically why it was my favourite growing up! Spooky, folklore, treats, parties, pranks, mischief all happen on Halloween! 🎃
I love that Sam and Trick r Treat are getting the recognition they deserve! Also you're fucking amazing and the detail and research that goes into all of your videos is PHENOMENAL.
I love your "Horror History" so much!! It feel like i'm watching a documentary about a horror movie😂😍🎃.
Candyman or Jeepers creepers would be cool to see covered
Trick ‘r treat is so underrated It's so unique the way the movie is structure
This quite literally has to be the greatest roll CZ has ever been on. Freddy (which we all waited god know's how long for), Art the Clown and NOW Trick R' Treat Sam. CZ has single handedly made this spooky season farrrr better. 🎃👻
Can't wait for trick or treat 2 😊

Can’t wait to see what you post on Halloween
Fun fact: the little boy peeping at the lycan girls is the same kid who played Sam
Man i wish this movie had a sequel because i really enjoyed it.
This has been one of my favorites for years! Love the part about the bus kids.
I love these History / Lore videos. I'm from Shetland and this is the first time I have ever heard Guiser (which we spell Guizer) out of that context. The pronunciation is identical. Mind...blown!
This was SO fun! Thanks for digging into the extra media I didn't know existed. Sam definitely strikes me as an old god like Crom Cruach or a diminished faerie king like, Balor the chaos god. His diminishment was both literal and figurative as he became more childlike in stature and nature.
This is one of your best videos! This was such a fun watch and truly shows your dedication to the genre! 🎃
Alright, thanks for another cool video, especially one like this. My Birthday is on Halloween day and being such, it’s my favorite holiday and time of the year. I always look forward to the shortening and cooling of the days along with the spooky television shows that come along with the month of October. Not forgetting to mention the kinds of feasts that the end of the year is know for.
Thanks again for the video, I really enjoyed it. Take care and happy Halloween to ya.

Superb! Excellent source material, i really enjoyed the background info too.
Great research and synthesis!
Dr. Loomis pronunciation of ‘Samhain’ never gets old😂😂
Awesome video man
CZ you are the best man ❤️ love the work you put in
Well I sure hope they get to make another one. I was so impressed with the film back when I first saw it but being older, wiser and learning so much about all the lore from this video gives me a deeper appreciation. I'm curious to see how what story they'll come up with.
I love Sam I can’t wait for more about him . Also I love in the movie how the old man still gets what’s comin to him
I was always knew this pumpkin had more meaning, im finally glad he's getting recognized

Hey Zac, great analysis of Sam from Trick’r Treat and good job explaining the origin of Halloween, I know you have to skip over important details for time and I just wanted share with you a detail you got wrong about pumpkin as Jack-o-lantern 🎃, the Celtics never used pumpkins as Jack-o-lantern, they used turnips in Ireland. It wasn’t until they immigrated to America, bringing their traditions with them, that they discovered the existence of pumpkins and started using them onward as Jack-o-Lanterns 🎃
Hey CZ looking good man it’s good to see my fav TH-camrs take care of themselves keep up the good work ❤❤
I always laugh at Sam during the werewolf scene. He’s just like “I got nothin, just enjoying the show”
New to your channel and so far I have really enjoyed your videos. I'm not big on watching scary movies, so watching your videos helps to give me a good overview of the movies are about without watching them. Also, the ones that I have watched, it helps to give better understanding on them. I wanted to ask if you would ever consider doing history videos on some of the old movies like Pumpkinhead and some other horror movies from those days. Definitly got a new fan in me though.
So happy to see another Horror History video
12:49 When I first saw the reverent, I thought it was a guy playing Grand Moff Tarkin from Star Wars
Great video! Come Christmas time, I’d love to see your take on Krampus, specifically michael dougherty’s take on the character. Not only does he have really interesting details (such as wearing a skinned face to appear like Santa or wearing rings that symbolize actual parts of ancient tradition), he also shares his universe with the Trick R’ Treat one as shown in a deleted scene. Apparently, the two films even take place generally in the same area. I think it would be fun to see you do a timeline that interconnect the two and show how Sam and Krampus are two sides of the same coin
I love your channel so much! Finally somebody as much into horror as I am! 😮
OKAYYY, I have had the trick r treat art book for 5 years and could not understand the continuity between the stories. You killed it 🤘
