Malo Yachts are very well known in Europe as ocean going sailing yachts. I know former owners of HRs that moved on to Malo. Apparently, they are built even stronger and over-sized than HRs. Excellent, safe, and beatiful boats!
Love all the Scandinavian boats: HR, Sweden Yachts, Baltic, Nautor Swan, etc., etc. Sleek and modern lines, beautifully finished interiors, super functional cockpit and deck layouts and they perform well. Plus, they're all built like tanks.
Fun fact: Malö is built in Kungsviken (The King's Bay) on the island of Orust in Sweden. According to the legend the viking king Olav Tryggvason's ship "Ormen Långe" (The Long Serpent) was built here in the 900's, more than 1000 years ago. From the 1200's there are contemporary written records of this boat yard, and the construction of the Norwegian king Håkon Håkonsson's warship. This is also the place where the boats of Harry Hallberg were built in the 1900's. When Hallberg moved to a bigger yard, the Kungsviken yard was taken over by Christoph Rassy. After Hallbergs retirement in the early 1970's, Christoph Rassy bought Hallbergs yard and merged it to become Hallberg-Rassy. Since the move of the Rassy yard, Malö has been the predominant boat being built in Kungsviken.
@@mufflejoy Well, New York was named after York of course. And York sounds different from London, does it? York sounds Scandinavian. So, you can say New York is a Viking City, too. Close related.
I am falling in love with this boat. What a gem. Seems ready for short handed sailing. Without this video I would never believe a boat from 1997 can look this good.
It must be difficult sometimes to review a boat that you really love. I can see it in your face. 😃 it's just the right size for that single handed sailor. Thx Jordan for the tour. I really spent some time reviewing the list of all she has. I'm impressed too. Let Randi know we miss seeing her but we understand, she has her hands full. Keep up the good work and we'll see you in the nest video. I'm going to bookmark this video so I can watch it again.
Those "shelves" to each side of the helm are a nice mitigation to the downside of that "t-shaped" cockpit you like - They flip up to support your legs if you want to sleep in the cockpit on really hot nights
Hi yall, it was great seeing you, I would say meet, but y'all were eating with your family and I caught you out of the corner of my eye. I don't think I entered the place other than the threshold....lol! Since you were eating I didn't want to impose other than to say hello! It's hard to believe you picked up from o m Fla and moved to NS. I visited the Island yrs ago when I was stationed in Maine. Beautiful place and no hurricanes!! It's hard to believe that the boat has been so well looked after, a real gem. I love HRs too, especially the old 35, but this is amazing... I love it too 😍 Nicely done video 👍
Randy. I have looked at white Abis several times. She has been on the market for many months now. Ask is $169,000. She is going to need a new engine soon (5600 hrs.) The decks need love too. She is a very nice boat, however with engine and decks figure she will be a $200K investment if not more.
I saw you at Annapolis and should’ve said hi. You were with your kid and I thought to let you enjoy the day. Thanks for the videos. It helps to get ideas during my own refit.
Absolutely stunning as the entire Scandinavian, Baltic and North Sea built boats (disclosure, like my Dutch Contest…). A lot of common design features and concepts, bet materials and fittings. Malo also sails relatively fast, in spite of the (lighter) medium displacement - all due to the superb design based on generations of boat builders that are all still in flourishing business.
More or less all Swedish high quality sailboats as Malo, Hallberg Rassy, Najad, Vindo and Sweden Yacht are made on the same island “Orust” on the Swedish west coast.
Great, never heard before of this boat! I 'll try to buy one! Another great design is Moody's (the original/designed by Dixon) before the company was taken over by Hanse! Incredible good English boats!
Used to own one of these puppies and the only reason we moved up to the 43 was because we had aft-swept spreaders as this one does. We wanted the greater flexibility of inline spreaders which we got on the 43 Classic which the UK agent said was the best he had delivered in 24 years!
Nice walkthrough. Malö is actually quite famous yachts. The Ö is pronounced as O and O out together OE. Ö in Swedish means Island and Mal means Moth. So Moth Island.
Only things I dont like are inboard shrouds & the issues that can come with a teak deck. Interior works great for me, U galley & aft head. Engine hours are getting up there.
@@bos6782 That's actually quite funny. I laugh at these people who need google maps to get around the country but I'm even worse. We only ever pulled out a map once on a boat and that was because there were some young children on board so we plotted the coarse twice a day to show them. Other than that I've only ever seen electronic charting. I've got a 1200 mile passage coming up. I'll pull out a map and chart it 👍
You should review: Regina at Vindö, HallbergRassy352 (specifically 352, 5/5 planning of space compared to size) and of course a Najad. Yes I’m from Sweden..
Ok. Now That’s a nice boat! The only real negative that I saw was screwed down teak decks. BTW. When you review a boat and the teak decks are NOT screwed down, make sure and mention it. A very good selling point. Otherwise, great. And I am with you on center cockpits but prefer them on boat’s over 40 feet. Also Malo, HR and Najad are similar and just down the street from each other. All great boats.
I've heard of them but they sure seem to be uncommon in the states. Very nice boat. Id prefer a full skeg to protect the rudder and a bridge deck to prevent water ingress to the cabin in the event of a flooded cockpit. Its unfortunate that the side decks are so narrow and then cluttered by the shrouds. Finally,, too much teak covering the decks.. I'd prefer none. Otherwise, perfect. 😃 That is all.
Considering the class and reputation of these boats, I'm surprised at the deck-stepped mast. One school of thought says that if you lose a rig then a deck-stepped mast make it easier to clear the debris overboard. Personally, I'd go for a keel-stepped mast being less likely to be lost in the first place, plus it would lend itself to being jury rigged.
You must be young, but- the US never had a distributor for such a small manufacturer. Unbelievable boats- all handmade, will survive whatever happens (seasoned crew required!) THIS Boat is perfect in so many way, I can barely keep my hands off of the checkbook. But, there are MANY< MANY men & women who know Malo & what they bring to the table. My guess is- she is already sold...
that's a great looking boat and it looks very well cared for.. if I had the $$$$bills y'all I'd be on that... would prefer not to have in mast furling but.. yeah, great boat
There are many things to like about this boat, but that cockpit enclosure is not one of them. With the side panels in place, there's no room to swing a winch handle, and no safe way to go forward. I can't imagine having to exit the cockpit via the stern with nothing to hang on to until you get to that arch.
Outwardly a stunning condition boat.. appears to have been exceptionally well cared for, beautiful swept teak decks. Hopefully, they'll go some way to protecting the yacht from water ingress to that balsa core fiberglass deck beneath, something that always causes me concern.
Pretty clear this video was done on acquisition, not after extensive usage of the yacht. We sailed the south coast of England and over to Bantry Bay in Ireland in our first two years with her. Bit hey, this newby is making his video. Hang on for his “thoughts”.
I think it is Malø. Or Malö. Ø or Ö means island. Oy and oya too. You should know these words. Go to Scandinavia more often, you'd be surprised how familiar it is over there, for Americans. Do not stay in those bloody States your entire life.
The headline should read "The best Boat AMERICANS likely never heard of". As with (just about) everything else the American public is quite closed minded and not really interested to know or learn about "foreign" stuff. After living here for more than 30 years I am still astonished by the discrepancy between the wide held perception of the US as a dynamic and progressive nation when in fact it is extremely rigid and hostile to new ideas. Exceptions are few and far between, with regards to sailing these are reduced to "knowledge" about the European cheap charter buckets a la Beneteau or Bavaria and as far as real boats are concerned perhaps Hallberg-Rassy but how about Faurby, Comfortina, Sirius, Nordship, Luffe, RM Fora, Wauquiez, Elan to name a few. I sure appreciate your attempt to bring some light into this mantle of ignorance and I would suggest to do more of it, perhaps researching some of the brands I mentioned above.

I prefer sleek classic lines. The lines of this boat leave a lot to be desired. The slant of the stern is ugly. If there was a tiller instead of that huge wheel (or even a smaller wheel) there would be room for the seating to come all the way back with no interruption. THEN you'd have a nice sized cockpit.
After owning a Malo 39 Classic and a Malo 43 Classic, both of which were superior to Halberg-Rassy yachts, I can confirm the commentary of this TH-cam poster. It’s really sad that Malo Yachts no longer exists.

It is still only 10 miles between the HR and Malö yards on the island Orust- they share a lot of design and quality DNA.
