One of the greatest albums ever made. The genius behind the music and production is unbelievable. As a 50 year and an avid music lover this blows me away every time.
Same. Totally agree. RADIOHEAD "OK Computer," "KID A," and "A Moon-Shaped Pool," GRANDADDY"The Sophtware Slump," ELBOW "The Seldom Seen Kid" all have mesmerizing qualities and beauty that hit me hard every time I hear them.
There is technically one more track, the 'hidden' bonus track which plays a while after Motion Picture Soundtrack (or as a track of its own called 'Untitled', on digital formats). It's basically a 50 (or so) second crescendo of digitized noise, but interesting nonetheless. Enjoyed your takes on this. Looking forward to the rest of the discography!
I listen to this album when i want to forget about everything , How to disappear completely is about Dissociation due to traumatic or overwhelming events, so I think the whole album is about this theme
that's the vibe, the album is generally about isolation in its different forms, but there is also and underlying story, about this "Kid A", that may be the first child synthetically produced. If you view it in this light, the song Kid A is his birth (with Thom's voice resembling that of an infant), the National Anthem his confrontation with society (maybe in a form of a parade), How To Disappear Completely is some kind of adolescent escape, Treefingers is peace, Optimistic is about becoming adult, In Limbo is feeling lost in your 20' or something like that, Idioteque is a more grown up version of that initial feeling of isolation, that mixes with his new understanding of the hopeless world he lives in, Morning Bell is the disillusionment with love in the form of a divorce, and Motion Pictures Soundtrack is, finally, his suicide. The parabola is kind of clear. Sorry for the verbosity.
@@michelemorselli7047 Yes I like this interpretation, the good thing about kid a is that it depicts the mood and you can just create your personal meaning
Can't wait for your in rainbows reaction, but since you loved this so much it'll definitely be worth making a stop for Amnesiac. It was recorded in the same sessions as Kid A with the original intent to make it a double album. It's very similar to Kid A but its significantly different where it counts. It's weirder, colder, and arguably not as good but dammit I love it.
I love how when a reaction channel reacts to a Radiohead album all the diehard fans jump onto the comment section begging for the rest of their discography 🤣 (just having a laugh, don't take me seriously lol)
Loved this. Your analysis is so spot on, and as with OKC, has made me appreciate things I hadn't previously. Re: In Limbo, I remember the band saying it started out trying to sound like The Police, haha! That's actually the case with a lot of Radiohead stuff - they'll be trying to sound like someone else, and it'll get passed through each member's unique filter to the point where it sounds completely unique. At the time they were listening to a lot of Warp stuff, Bjork, Can, Mingus, Miles Davis, I think Ed was on a Low-era Bowie trip. Their tastes are all so diverse that (even without the songwriting ability) I think they'd always end up sounding interesting.
Also, I see you're keen to skip to In Rainbows, but I'd be intrigued by your reaction to Amnesiac. It's got some of the band's most interesting stuff on it (I'd like to see you work out the time signature to Pyramid Song), but is more inconsistent than Kid A.
So happy you reacted so quickly to this after OK computer. If you want to keep diving down the rabbit hole and are up for a more “relaxed” Radiohead , In Rainbows is my personal favorite (and that of many others). Not a bit of fat on that album!
Great reaction one of the best i ever seen, a true listener reaction, not one of those super pumped reaction that is common here on YT. If i can suggest a thing is to listen Amnesiac after this, before to move to in Rainbows. Amnesiac is the twin of Kid A, it was recorded in the same session and was released i think less the a year after Kid A. Probably the original idea was to do a double album. Anyway someone think that Amnesiac is not a great album, i don't think so, try it yourself ;)
Of all the rabbit holes to go down Radiohead is probably my favorite they have a shit-ton of amazing b-sides and they seem to have so much variety in every record.
Hey look, I don't know if it was this video you mentioned it, and frankly I'm not gonna listen all the way back to find the mention, but you brought up Secrets Of the Beehive by David Sylvian and all I have to say is that album fucking MOVED me! Absolutely phenomenal piece of music that I wouldn't have known existed if not for you. I thank you very much for the mention in one of these videos
Hey Dean I love your channel! Tool, Radiohead, and Nine Inch Nails kind of became my trifecta growing up of my favorite bands when somebody would ask me. Of course there are many more more spanning across decades…but I want to recommend doing Nine Inch Nails (NIN). The Fragile was released in 1999 and is regarded as Trent’s magnum opus. It’s one of those albums that changes everything after you have heard it (funny to think as with a lot of bands I love now, I didn’t really have the the ears to digest them at first; but it’s one of the most profound albums I have ever heard. I recommend a full album reaction. Back when CDs were a thing, he released the album in 2 discs: Left and Right. I recommend starting with Left and doing it in its entirety, and the doing Right, the same thing. It’s something you have never experienced I promise; but give it your most gracious and accepting ears when you put it on. It is so incredibly detailed, and when you find out that Trent Reznor is the creating force behind it (he is NIN) you’ll have a deeper appreciation for his compositional nature, which is why he is probably doing scores now; like Disney’s “Soul”, HBO’s “The Watchmen”, and Netflix’s “Birdbox”. His first score was all the way back in 2010 on “The Social Network” by David Fincher. Enjoy man, and I’m really excited to do the journey with you if you decide to embark.
Trent Reznor has become a pure sonic genius. Saw NIN the first time in 1991, loved them, but didn't realize the impact they(and he) would have over time.
RH feels as familiar and as refreshing as breathing..enjoying your journey and can't wait until in rainbows..I vascillate between kid A and rainbows as my favorite.. Xo
Great reaction. I think you'd really like the last couple of Low albums (especially Double Negative), really interesting textures and soundscapes, like a traditional record that's been smashed to pieces and reassembled. Mimi Parker from the band sadly passed away recently, will be sorely missed.
Radiohead could easily have made another OK Computer, taken the money and it would have made them the biggest band in the world. Instead they made *Kid A* how freakin awesome is that !
luckily they seem to make music for a different purpose. 😅 because 'OK-Computer' might have been "just" another 'the Bends' album in that case. and it was jigsaw falling into place for me that started my 20+ year Radiohead journey.
The first vid of yours I watched was OKC, and when at the end you stated the interest in jumping into Kid A I was buckled in and ready for a ride. The sound difference between the two albums is vastly different, so I fully expected you to dislike the leap in tone and production. ...Then after clicking on pt. 1 of Kid A, I saw the Daft Punk (Tron Legacy) album hung on your wall. Never mind. This guy's got a wider palette than anticipated, so kudos. Glad you enjoyed both albums. I'm an aging EDM / techno / dance head myself, yet I still consider OKC, Kid A, and Amnesiac to be my favorite trio of albums released chronologically by a band (followed by The Strokes' first three releases, weirdly). There's something magical in what they created -- sweet yet dark? Catchy but isolated? Intelligent but indecipherable? Fantastic stuff, no matter what.
This album came out my freshman year of college, and I listened to it to go to sleep every night. So I would definitely say it's a relaxing album. Something about it just makes me drift off into the ether. Especially the title track and Treefingers.
It's debatable whether the second chord in Morning Bell is C#m or A7M, both chords have the same notes but since the bass actually stays on A I think it's the latter.
Extraordinary record.I realised I've probably only ever listened to it alone, until now! Nice to get the cans on and hear your reaction man...great work. Sub'd!
Every time I listen to motion picture soundtrack, it always sounds to me that the bottom note of the second chord in the chorus part is out of tune or somewhat really off, giving it an intense crumbling feeling, really fascinating... Hope someone knows what happened there.
Btw after listening to this album so many times, nowadays I mostly only return to morning bells. Gosh so many stunning ideas just keep getting thrown around all over the place as if it's so effortless
Thank you for your reaction to my favorite album of my favorite band! It would be wonderful to see your reaction to Scott Walker's first three albums (Scott 1, 2 and 3, respectively) and especially to the albums of his late avant-garde period (Tilt, Soused), after them any music seems pop
Some of the coolest music ever. I remember listening to the Drift and thinking it was the weirdest album I had ever heard (and I've heard some weird ones!)
Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart, anything by Can, Freak Out by Mothers of Invention (Frank Zappa), Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed, anything by Steve Reich, the Eraserhead soundtrack, An Electric Storm by White Noise. And the first two Suicide albums. The song "Frankie Teardrop" is pretty chilling.

A very risky step that Radiohead took with Kid A and it turned out to be a gem. Influences include Can, Kraftwerk, Sigur Rós, Talk Talk and even progressive rock bands.
