  • Classic crowd footage at Arden St North Melbourne in 1978. Who remembers St Kilda defeating reigning premiers Nth Melbourne by 3 points in round 14, 1978? Controversy surrounded goal umpire (also a Police inspector) Eric Brewer who awarded a goal to the Saints with the last kick of the day. A North fan attacked goal ump Brewer with a flag pole, for his safety he was given a 14 man police guard to get him off the ground that was invaded by angry North supporters. Narrated by the late Peter Luck, this excerpt from the magnificent ‘This Fabulous Century’ series also includes Peter at the MCG and Ron Barassi talking about the game he loves.

Standing in the outer on a cold Saturday afternoon, with a cold Melbourne Bitter, and a boiling hot pie ..... ,
and not having to pay a small fortune just to get in.
I'd have that any day over the over-commercialised, politicised, over-umpired game we have today.
I never went to Arden St, but as a kid I have memories of mid-1960's games at Kardinia Park, Glenferrie Oval, and Moorabbin.
Hey, I even went to Waverley Park when it still had an "outer". That was in 1970.
    Unforgettable stuff.

Interesting that they're *finally* building an Arden railway station... which will open about four decades too late to cater to the football crowds.

@J G Umm, why the hostility? People in Australia mostly like Australian footy, people in most overseas places like Soccer. It's not like AFL in this country is a threat to soccer worldwide. So live and let live. :-)

Remember this well. Robert Elliott kicked a goal after the siren which Steve McCann claimed he touched. Sparked a STK revival in the last third of the season.

amazing Gezza, those sparse crowds were common back then except for Carlton,Collingwood,Richmond
Geelong and Essendon games .Can u believe the week before St.Kilda had conceded 33 goals @ the western oval where Templeton kicked 15.9...i happened to be @that western oval game and to beat top of the ladder North the very next week ,quite amazing.North woulda been about $1.15 to win

Gezza, I'll preface this by saying that I really apprecaite your videos. But so often the comments section is filled by people equating them to the 'good old days'. To those people I say: reflect on the commentry at 1:11 in this video.

There has always been an undertone of violence in Australia and remains that way in 2024. That's just part of life andwon't change anytime soon. The reason why people keep saying the good old days is because we had so much more freedom back then. If you weren't around in those days you probably wouldn't understand that. Since the beginning of the 2000s we have been increasingly suppressed and footy is one of the greatest examples of this. Going to the footy in 2024 we only have 2 bland concrete stadiums in Melbourne with nauseating "entertainment" during the breaks and contrived crowd engagement which is all controlled by the AFL.. We are forced to follow their agenda and put up with horrendous umpiring and chopping and changing rules when it doesn't suit the AFL's agenda.

@@mondaynight For every freedom you say we've lost since the 70s, I'll be able to name three we've gained. For example, you can still go and have a mostly old fashioned VFL football experience at current VFL games or at local footy games, and if you want the freedom to watch football free from second hand smoke, driving rain, overly drunk violent men (which I did experience then as a kid), and with players that set a positive behavioral example for your kids you can go to an AFL game (noting the AFL did not exist in the 70s)
