      When someone mentions the 80's and 'cosmos', I can't help thinking of the Carl Sagan series. "There are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on all the beaches on Earth", or something like that. Oh, and greets to Mr Scissors: 8X

    These OS's are a good example of how the RPi 4 is significantly more powerful than the previous RPi models. I appreciate how the Raspberry Pi foundation is taking its time to deliver hardware and software that's stable. They know their SBC's quite well, so they can watch the advancement of the tech, and take advantage of it at the right time/price point. Hope I can get my hands on a RPi 4 soon, it seems every time I go to order a 4GB, they're (still) out of stock. Thanks for another great video Chris.

  • @markconger8049

    Two additional notes:
    1. Ubuntu for the Pi 4 is now available. Both 32 and 64 bit versions are available. Another TH-camr, ETA Prime, has recently released a video covering this.
    2. The release of 64 bit Raspbian may seem unexciting but let me theorize why this could be a great thing going forward. Without getting super technical, it is worth mentioning that 32 bit operating systems can only work with about 3 gigabytes of RAM. But the Pi 4 has up to 4GB so to make all of the RAM accessible in 32 bit Raspbian Buster a workaround had to be implemented. That workaround only gets you a max of 4GB. The 64 bit operating system can address much, much more RAM than that so my theory is that with the 4GB memory barrier removed we may see future Pi 4 models (4B+ perhaps) with more than 4 GB of RAM. Much more. Raspberry Pi officials have stated affordable memory chips greater than 4GB could not be sourced and keep the Pi cost where it is currently so they stopped at 4GB. But, I would be happy to pay up to $100 for an 8GB Pi 4.

    • @markconger8049
      @markconger8049 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, one more note about RAM in the Pi 4, I think I read where the Broadcom Sytem on a Chip (SoC) which houses the processor cores, video core, GPIO, PCIe, and such can handle up to 16GB of RAM. The 64-bit operating system can address much more so this is a SoC limitation, but still, 16GB is jaw dropping in the Pi world. Maybe we’ll see it. Who knows.

    A good representative selection that you have provided us with ! Manjaro sounds to be a useful "all-round" distribution ! As regards 64-bit, PiLFS now have a 64-bit version for people who want to build their own operating system ! Anyone tempted note that there are quite a lot of steps - last one that I built took me a fortnight in-between other things... But yes, a great selection Chris, and Manjaro certainly sounds a safe bet until Raspbian 64-bit fully gets off the ground. Thanks for this useful primer into 64-bit on the Pi !

    I've used both OMV and LibreELEC in the past. I should mention OctoPrint for those who have a 3D Printer. I bought a Monoprice Maker Select Plus back in April, which doesn't have Wi-Fi connectivity, and I keep it in my hobby room where I build plastic models as well as do other things. Hooking it up to a RPi and installing OctoPrint changes that. It allows you to manage and monitor prints over a network through a web UI, and also an app. Although I believe there is a plugin to print from anywhere (I've just not tried it). For those who use AstroPrint--there's a plugin for that, too.

    • @artbecker5618
      @artbecker5618 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OctoPrint is interesting, as it not only controls your printer, but you can't even turn the printer on and off using the switch, if you are running it. The slight downside is that it is written in Python 2.

    Dr. Barnatt, you continue to impress and amaze with your consistently great videos providing always delicious, useful, clear, practical, and objective, information, recommendations and expert advise. That you do so with such regular good humor is even more remarkable. And all of it for free! As long as you are able to keep doing it, I will keep watching it. Thank you and best wishes.
    So today thanks to you, I ordered the RPi 4B, Ice cooler, etc. to add to my collection of SBC's, and I look forward to trying these OS alternatives. But I DID NOT order the blue LED version of the cooler. There should be an international law against blue LED's, which are known to interfere with sleep, and probably tortures pets. Amber should be the gold standard.
    So I ordered the multi-color RGB fan-version, complete with a colorful case option, but I would have ordered amber if I had found it. With any luck at all, there will be software control of the RGB color choices. In any case, there should always be a way to shut off the LEDs since they provide little if any value for their power consumption.

      I have learned a lot in the last week about the inner workings of development in the Pi community and it has revealed a lot is was surprised about including how lazy broadcom had been like RockChip and AMLogic. They are all freeloaders of the community expecting it to do all the heavy lifting. Quit sad really.

    tl;dr; Manjaro XFCE edition on Rpi4 is amazing, way better than Raspian in terms of general daily computing. My laptop, xps 13, recently stopped working. Until it was fixed I was happily using RPi4 as my main computer. I wasn't aware that other distros were available for it, so I used Raspian for two weeks or so, and I was underwhelmed by this experience. After watching this video, I switched to Manjaro, which knocked my socks off!. I do most of my work on the command line and through web browser etc. So, after using Manjaro, I can say that Rpi4 can certainly be a desktop replacement for me! Hi Chris, thanks for your excellent work.
    I've played around DietPi for a few days now, It seems to be excellent for tinkering about, which is how a lot of us learn things - particularly as you get over 50 !
    Also, it bridges very nicely between a desktop GUI and it's terminal based config applications - which is great for those of use still weary of using terminals.
    Perhaps a video dedicated to DietPi would be well received ? I'm sure most Raspberry Pi's have been purchased as a learning tool/Linux play thing.
    Thanks again

    Since you mentioned you were using the Ice Tower, a couple of questions if I may.
    How noisy is it?
    Did you ever find a case to fit it?
    I ask because I originally bought a CanaKit case with fan and it's noisy. I am currently using a Flirc case and it works pretty well passively but I'm really jonesing for the ice tower with a case. :)

    Finally just got my Pi 4! Not real happy with the Raspbian version I tried in a VM on my PC (software I add with the provided add software utility usually never shows up in the launch menus at all, so I can never find it after installing it and the convoluted "apt-get" CLI program to get any updates is clunky compared to the nice utilities provided in most other Linux distributions), so want to install Manjaro instead... You skipped a few steps of how to actually install this on a Pi in your video, like what to do with the "img" file after extracting it from the "xz" archive from the web site? Do i just write it as is to the SD card (which I presume still needs to be in FAT32 format?) and then boot my Pi? Thanks!

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Use Etcher to install image files to an SD card for a Pi. I did not cover it here as I've done so many times before -- eg see from about 6 minutes into this video: th-cam.com/video/bpvlEbdA6qI/w-d-xo.html If I've cover installing each OS in this video it would have done on forever. :) Good luck!

      @@ExplainingComputers Thanks! I got it, actually installed Raspbian on a separate SD card so installed and tried both it and Manjaro. Like the PC version of Raspbian, I wasn't really happy with the fact that the ARM version only open up a few configuration settings - not nearly as many as Manjaro and most other Linux distributions provide. I wasn't even able to configure the mouse pointer to be easily seen on the small monitor I have the Pi plugged up to nor figure out how to add my wi-fi printer - both things I could do rather easily on Manjaro. Yeah, I understand that Raspbian and the Pi itself were designed for complete novices but as a power user the lack of exposure to configuration controls that I know have to exist drives me nuts! -:)
      I was rather surprised to see my Pi and its cooling fan still lit up and spinning long after I'd unplugged the main power supply - I guess pulling some juice from the HDMI connection? I was also trying to figure out if there was any easy way to get the Pi to boot again after shutting it down, without unplugging and then reconnecting the power supply? Seems pretty clunky to have to do that, to get it to boot up again...
      I have my new Pi 4 in an inexpensive Geekpi.com case, with heat sinks on all of the big chips and a very small fan. I can't find any utilities under Manjaro that I can add to actually measure the chip temperature like you did in your cooling videos. (The Ice Tower is still totally sold out on Amazon here, and they claim to have no idea when it might be available again). I'll go back and look at your cooling videos again, to see the details of the command you were using to get this - so maybe I can find it in the Manjaro "add/remove software" database. Just curious how may current configuration is keeping it cool.
      Next month I'll try to get a camera module and begin prototyping the software end of the DIY security video camera that Linux Tech Tips showed how to make recently - in their case with a Pi-zero. I want to get the software all set up and tested on the Pi 4 before getting a zero to use in the real application. Most commercial home security camera systems these days only want to work with smart phone apps, not traditional surveillance software systems like iSpy and many others provide. I want a camera that can upload still images via FTP or live streams with RTSP - which few of the modern camera systems for home use can actually do. Embarrassing that my one 15 year old IP wi-fi camera can do this way better and more reliably than my modern WYZE cameras can (only using some of their "unsupported" and pretty unreliable beta firmware).
      Keep up the good work Christopher, and thanks again!

      I'm pretty impressed with the performance of my (4GB) Pi 4 with Manjaro, which does things like video playback a lot better than the (I think 1.9GHZ) Atom processor in my Minix micro, fan-less Windows 10 PC does. Just about anything I do on the Pi 4 responds more consistently and crisply than anything on the Minix Windows PC does - probably because Linux isn't hauling as much baggage around as Windows does. I did run into one weird thing though where attempting to play a TH-cam video in Firefox (just inside the browser window, not full screen) completely blanked the whole display until I powered the system off and rebooted it. Thankfully Chromium didn't have the same problem and plays TH-cam videos (on a small 1600x900 display) very nicely.
      Still haven't found anything that can measure the Pi's CPU temperature under Manjaro since I could not successfully recompile the "userland" utilities that contain the "vcgencmd" command (due to build script errors under Manjaro) and discovered that other utilities such as "psensor" that are supposed to show CPU and motherboard temperatures obviously have no clue how to get that information on a Pi 4. Oh well...

    Another great video Christopher. I again learned a lot. I never tried DietPi. And I didn't know it was possible to run Raspbian in arm64. I'll have to try that. Great info.
    I made a video about installing Mate on Ubuntu 19.10 server on the Raspberry Pi 4. There are some issues, but it does run well. HDMI sound doesn't work right yet, and for me 4GB disables USB. So I've got to limit to 3074MB. Still ok for a Raspberry Pi. The biggest advantage of Ubuntu 19.10 is that it uses mainline kernel 5.3 instead of the Raspberry kernel, and it has the latest software versions. And it's faster for my tasks than Debian Buster.
    Because of its limitations it doesn't yet fit in this list. But it is great to see this happening for the Raspberry. I hope they'll fix the issues soon.
    I must say I like the RK3399's so much more than the RPi4 for so many reasons. I also had a lot of problems with my capture device. For terminal I had to use my hdmi splitter. But for desktop use that gave an empty black display. So then I had to run it thru the capture device, but it only worked with 4k resolution. So I had to enlarge everything. So I know what you menth with having to reboot a lot for your capture device :)
    Have a great evening, greetings.

    I guess the youtube playback in raspbian 64 bit is the same as in Manjaro. No hardware support yet. I agree that youtube is ok, watched several hours of youtube content and is ok enough but not good enough if for example you have a stockmarket ticket scrolling in the video. Then you will definitely see the effects of the dropped frames.
    Also tested libreelec. That all works fine except it support only up to the DTS sound format. I remember reading the specs at the launch of the pi4 that it could support the lossless formats TrueHD and DTS Master HD-MA.
