I sang this song for state choir almost 2 years ago and it still sticks with me. I had the privilege to be led by Andrea Ramsey herself when performing this song and really got to experience the whole piece.
My roots are earth Muddy river and honeysuckle My roots are earth Muddy river and honeysuckle My roots are earth Muddy river and honeysuckle Sturdy and rigid Like farmhouse planks I shared a sisterhood With the amber grasses My dreams climbed endlessly Like the kudzu in July (Like the kudzu in July) I shared a sisterhood With the amber grasses My dreams climbed endlessly No fear in sight In nature In naive youth All the forest was possible (All the forest was possible) All the pasture was my own (All the pasture was my own) My mother told me I was beautiful And I believed her then Why shouldn't I? There is no doubt in a pond Insecurity does not grow in a meadow It will not sprout beneath the southern pines It is planted by the boys on the school bus Tended by the words of small minds And words may wound you But are they true? You are beautiful You are enough You must believe in that Believe the truth My roots are earth Muddy river and honeysuckle My roots are beautiful My roots are strong
1:06 if you listen closely you can hear someone start to sing No Fear In Sight on accident if that aint a mood my choir did it a lot(even in concert lol)
singing this song this year, and it's absolutely beautiful. the altos in my choir are so powerful while singing this, but the best part to me is how my choir director told us to sing it. he told us to imagine that one person in our lives, whether they're with us or not, who no matter what you're going through would just gently wrap their arms around you and say "it's okay, we're gonna get through this". to sing it the way they would if they were comforting you. and for me, that's my mom. always has been. it made all of my intrusive thoughts go away in that very moment and i wanted to cry in the best way possible. i love my mom, my director, and this song, and i haven't even performed it yet. andrea ramsey, in the .00001% chance you see this, i love this song. it's beautiful and one of the only songs to actually make me cry. thank you so much for this amazing contribution to the music and choral community.
