In my mind, Norvina has cheapened the ABH brand - taking its glam, luxurious image and turning it gaudy and brash. Her social media presence is questionable at times too and draws negative, shady attention. ABH has no class anymore. The price of NYX products is odd - sometimes it’s reasonable and other times, particularly the eyeshadow palettes, they seem way overpriced. The NYX market has been taken over by Elf and Wet n Wild I think - great, innovative, true drugstore pricing and much better value for the quality. Too Faced died for me with the whole ‘rich lives matter’ fiasco...

I wore covergirl and maybelline and a brand called Flame Glow back then. I buy drugstore or indie for my niece now. I just don’t get it. I feel the exact same way about NYX. I remember when they were a brand more like Essence, Wet n Wild, or Elf. But a lot of the time I was not happy with my purchase from them. Now when I look up a NYX product on Ulta I am shocked by how expensive it is! Someone at that company needs a reality check!

    • @owentheslug
      @owentheslug 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

Yes! They were like a company who made about half eh stuff & half awesome stuff when you looked at the price point. So for teens/newer to makeup or someone who was just wanting to play with a new formula of a product (think using a gel eyeliner when you have only used pencil or liquid). Now I just walk right past & go to WnW or ELF for my teen because they are making great formulas for the price & have fun trendy items that you might want to see if the color/style would even be worth getting a "real" one.

I’ve actually stopped buying makeup like I once did 4-5 years ago. Tbh at first I really enjoyed watching some of my favorite TH-camr get endorsements and partner up with other makeup brands but after a while it became less and less about the art of makeup and more about who has what or who has
More 💰. It became less and less authentic.

It's funny actually a lot of the brands you mentioned are ones I've stopped buying from too
Too Faced - bought some lippies and Better than Sex mascara. Was nearly swayed by the Gingerbread palettes but haven't bought from them in YEARS.
Smashbox - anything I bought from them I returned or sold on. If I have anything from them, it's gifted or a freebie!
NYX - similar to Smashbox. Bought from them when I was new to makeup, hadn't bought from them in years but I did just pick up their micro brow pencil as it was in sale and I was curious
    Philosophy - bought once, unimpressed
Sephora Collection - bought a concealer when I lived in Canada. Now back in the UK now so unlikely I'll buy again but probably wouldn't even if I had access
ABH - like you, last thing from them I purchased was the Jackie Aina palette cos, Jackie Aina, and it's actually stunning
J* - I wish I'd known and acknowledged the truth about him sooner. Far too much of my collection is made up of his brand 🙄
If anyone has taken the time to read this ramble, you deserve a medal 😂

Thankfully I got on the Jackie Aina wagon, and I was blown away once more. But I don't feel like purchasing from them again. Lu Hughes I almost got sucked in to buying her palette from all the hype, but I’m glad I didn’t. I don’t use glitters on my eyes (only on nails and on cheeks) so those first two rows would’ve been unused for me too. Before a lot of people thought she was the fairy godmother of TH-cam, but I was following her since 2015 and my eyes opened up when she started hanging out with racist JS. Back then he hadn’t even apologized for his racist videos and her excuse when people asked why she was hanging out with a toxic, racist person was “JS is nice to me”. 🙄 I see through people and to me birds of a feather flock together, that goes for everyone. I don’t care if she never comes back to TH-cam. If she can’t take the heat, then she should just retire and enjoy her millions.
JS is just a gross, vulgar mean spirited human being. It’s annoying to see the constant flexing and I can tell that he thinks he’s better than others because of his wealth. There’s s*xual harassment allegations coming out against him now from multiple people. It’s on the insider website After reading that I am more glad that I don’t support him anymore.

I own nothing from both of these businesses and never will. You stating that JS is dark is the perfect way to explain it. I don't stand behind his actions and how he handles his (not very) private life because it bleeds into the public realm.
Morphe does never did it for me. Then, they have too many problematic pseudo-celebrities mixed into this.
I haven't bought Two Faced in quite some time but after the Rich Lives Matter episode, I was 'never again.'
Many other brands that I don't purchase from are probably because they are not cruelty-free. I've been weaning away from non-CF brands for over a decade now. And, I do miss some of those brands but I do have to make my own stance with how I spend my money and who with.
Now I hope Jen doesn't get a host of hate for this. It's her channel and it's her opinion. I'm OK with that. Other people who will get their panties in a bunch should either click away or just don't watch her.

Wow - cool that you included that T1J clip. I’ve recently discovered him, and have been enjoying his content. As far as brands, I have no disagreement with any of your choices or reasons. I don’t buy any celebrity branded stuff (I might if it was undisputedly good and worked for me), or products not designed for my demographic (over 55, dry skin, etc.), or just too damned expensive. I also don’t usually rule anything out 100% just because of a brand name. But with JS, I would not feel good that any of my money went to benefit him, so, no. Same with anyone who makes me feel that way.

People calling you a hypocrite is such BS. Even if he wasn't the worse, you're allowed to not like someone or a brand. This is an opinion channel and while some facts are helpful, you bias is the reason we watch you. Most brands, and people for that matter, are problematic in some way. It's a spectrum, but you're allowed to draw lines in the sand and you don't have to justify your actions to anyone.
This is my issue with cancel culture, it's so black and white. You can feel differently about racism than cruelty free status. You can decide to continue purchasing from a brand that had a problematic employee, but is making the right changes. All issues are not the same, you have to use your best judgement and knowledge of a situation.

NYX has a mascara I love (pink tube. Wore not as good, but after some air in the tube and time, voila!), and those lipsticks that are meant to be blurry, velvet, and come in a tube with a puff applicator (hate the applicator) are INCREDIBLE. The colors are super fun, the pigmentation is intense, and the way they apply and wear is just perfect. I love love love them. Also, their tiny pigments that come in a little jar, specifically their FOILS, are bomb. NYX has a lot of gimmicky, not so good products, and I agree-their price points have gone out of control. An eyeshadow palette for $38? It’s big, to be sure, but the shades wore like mud. So I totally get it. But at least those three things come to mind, and I think I could come up with more if I went through my collection. Again, I totally understand where you’re coming from! But those lipsticks and foils I still can’t find things I like for the price elsewhere. They are truly my favs.

I recently started buying from them. I absolutely do love their eyeliner and I was eyeing the ultimate utopia. I recently got it at a discount and I'm just excited to play with it. I have the same issue with Pixie. When I first heard from them. The prices weren't so expensive and on youtube it was described as a drugstore brand at one point but then when it was finally available to me, the prices were appalling. Kristi's launch, the poor customer service, lack of communication and overall not fantastic products leaves me saying "nope, I'm gonna save my money". I finally got the Kristi palette and it stains my contact lenses purple everytime I use it. Contacted my lense manufacturer and they said they'll change colour when they've been contaminated, told me to soak them in a peroxide solution and see if that fixes it. Took me two weeks to figure out that it's the palette causing it.

When Nyx launched in Germany a few years ago, they intended to sell their products for high end prices. There was ofc quite a backlash by consumers so they had to change their strategy and go back to drugstore pricing. But ever since then I consider that brand quite shady. Never buying from them.
The Sephora Brand has actually some quite nice products. I like the foundations and I'm using their bronzer almost daily. They also have good eyebrow stuff. You just need to look past the gimmicky stuff :)

I’m from Germany too! I think the reason they can knock the prices down in Germany is because they now realizes that consumers will not buy from them if their products are over priced. Here in the states a lot of stuff is over priced because people are willing to buy at those prices. I think in the U.S we need to be more conscious about how much money we spend and use the power of our pockets (when it comes to makeup). If we can.

I noticed their stuff is more affordable in Germany than in Finland. Everything is pricier in Finland though but I find Catrice, Essence, Rival and Elf so much more affordable.

I'm in NZ and nyx is quite expensive. $30-$40 price range for most things. I don't buy from them but I see it in store etc.

If I'm going to buy something I mainly focus on the quality of the product, how frequently I'm going to use it, and how much I want to spend. I don't really care about the company drama or the owners issues, they ultimately are not important to me and does not represent the product itself. There's a whole team working behind someone's brand, and not all of the are problematic or a company may have an incredible image and reputation and still produce low quality makeup. Which means I'm not going to buy a thing from them, no matter who they are. It's just me and I totally respect the way others are motivated to purchase something.🤗

You feel about Too Faced the way I feel about MAC: they got in bed with Estee Lauder and became a shadow of themselves. However, I DO still love the Born This Way concealer and foundation from them.

Jen I completely agree with your list! I would also add Morphe, I have never bought from them, something just made every other choice look better...and Stila, other than the liquid shadows they came out with I have been disappointed in them for a long time...one more is Cargo, I used to enjoy some of their products, are they even popular any more? The prices that some of the brands I used to enjoy have increased to where for a few bucks more I can buy brands like Dior and other high end brands that seemed ridiculously priced when I was in college. The more I try things the more I find I like from Indie brands on etsy or brands like e.l.f and I save a ton of money without sacrificing quality. I just give up some fancy packaging and I have found I am okay with it!

I'm happy to see you talk about why you don't support Jeffree Star. I remember your video saying you would just review anyone and my heart dropped a little. I'm glad you are going with your heart and sticking to it. ♡

Damaris Ricard can I ask why Manny? I haven’t watched him in a long time but it seems like he’d been keeping himself in check recently especially compared to some other influencers. Is there some other drama/issues going on with him?

Shelby Caruso I actually appreciate the person he became. He made a very important video on race education and donated the ad revenue when everything was going down. I felt that was honorable & sincere and sent it to my makeup friends.

I've never liked Jeffree and have never bought from his brand. I was tempted by the Cremated palette because I love black shadow, but almost half of the palette was way too light for my skin tone. Same with the newest palette. I got the grey palette by Colourpop and I truly think I'm better off

I definitely feel that. I also refuse to buy from some brands, and you know what - it doesn't matter. The market is so over saturated with makeup, you'll find a dupe for whatever you want elsewhere.

I agree with you on the Smashbox front. No one talks about them anymore. I feel like there are a lot of brands that were once popular and that we no longer here hype about such as The Balm, Lorac and Laura Gellar. I also think that people have shifted towards smaller, indi brands. Jenn I'd love to see you review some smaller, more affordable brands, if you haven't done so already. lol

The first time I tried TooFaced was the chocolate bon bon palette from tj maxx. Maybe it being there should have given me a clue. It was so chalky and hard pressed, I had to return it. I’ll never buy their eye products again and nothing else from the brand interests me. My experience is a lot different from yours regarding ABH. I got really into makeup just after the soft glam phase and never purchased their products, until very recently. I picked up the mini nirvana vol 3 and I think it’s fantastic and the color story is quite unique IMO. I’m a colourpop fanatic but lately I wish they would do more inventive color stories like the mini nirvana vol3. Great video and perspectives, thanks!!

And (I hate the word) but the make up feels SO cheap to me.
Honestly if I was blind folded and I had morphed vs the dollar store make up, I probably would reach for the dollar store make up first.

I totally agree, I worked at a Sephora like makeup counter with some of these brands and you aren’t wrong. Smashbox was not consistent, only thing I would buy again from them is the gel pencil eyeliners, they don’t budge. I used to love ABH, after the collab pallets started coming out it was all down hill with just trash to keep up with constant new products instead of sticking with staple products and quality. Philosophy.... Just don’t. Haha.

Jen, I also wasn’t a fan of sephora collection back in the day i have to admit. But theyve come a long way! They have reformulated their eye shadows, and came out with a clean skincare + makeup line. In the skincare line, the outer packaging is made of paper sourced from sustainably managed forests, and the plastics are made up of sugarcane residuals. I personally love the new clean foundation (vitamin c + greentea) paired with the SC microsmooth powder (also loved by Alissa Ashley). Also their 3.0 moisturizer (3 oils: Rosehip, Marula, and Avocado oil) is super hydrating i love it! Give it a chance!

Rich Lux made a video inspired by this one and spoke very highly of you and your channel. I think it's so great that this video is sparking deeper discussions about reasons for not purchasing from brands and examining internal motivations when choosing what makeup to buy. Luv u so much! 💗💝💖
