Tappei has said this in a QnA
Q: Now that their eldest son Subaru has been summoned to another world, what’s the situation in the Natsuki household? They seem like a couple that it wouldn’t be too surprising if they chased after him to the other world.**
A: They’re enduring the disappearance of their eldest son somehow or other. The police investigation has no leads, and Kenichi is trying to comfort Naoko but it’s not that effective. They’re passing each day tearfully.
This is a heartbreaking conformation that Subaru’s disappearance hurt his family more than he can even imagine.
The scene with Subaru’s mother saying “Take Care” can be interpreted differently as well. In Japanese culture this saying would translate to Subaru’s mom saying “Please comeback safely” and Subaru should have said “I’ll go and I’ll comeback”. But when the last time Subaru saw his mother. He didn’t replied back to her. Subaru’s mom could have interpreted this as when Subaru was leaving home, he did not had any intention of coming back. There is a high chance that Subaru’s mom thinks that Subaru took his own life.

Subaru's way of speaking so bluntly and strangely is totally his mother plus his eyes

It's kinda funny that while normally, Faroh is correct in her character insights in other shows. But when it comes to Re:Zero, she gets completely confused, well mostly because she reads too deeply in certain dialogues and actions. Also, Subaru is crying that he won't be able to do anything for his parents or repay them because he CAN'T return to his own world and there ISN'T any known way for him to return. So he's basically stuck there in the other world while his parents are depressed because their son just suddenly went missing one day. Even sadder is the flashback of Subaru just ignoring his mom before he got transported to the other world, the guilt felt by both parties must be immense af. This is definitely one of my favorite episodes in Season 2. Thanks for the reaction.

16:28 “What do you mean you’re never going to see them again? You’re gonna go back, aren’t you?” I don’t think Subaru has any control over that. We (and I’m sure he) doesn’t know how he got transported to this place, and if he knew how to return to his past life, he probably would have done it instead of facing so much pain and deaths. Actually, I’m surprised that he hasn’t made more effort in trying to find out how to get back, if possible.
17:52 “Isn’t this like against the law?” Nope. In Japan, compulsory education is only to the end of Middle school. That being said, most students do study hard to enter high school (they have to take an entrance exam to get into high school).
19:52 “Are they dead or something?” I don’t think so… it’s Subaru that was transported to that fantasy world. His family are still in the regular Earth.
24:20 “Did she (Subaru’s mom) know?” No. ‘Itterashai’ is a standard thing you say to someone leaving, and the other person is supposed to say ‘ittekimasu,’ but Subaru said nothing. That’s why in this trial dream world, he finally said it.

8:20 in the novel Subarus eyes specifically are described as mean scary or evil looking eyes that he inherited from his mom the anime changed them a bit vs that description

Subaru's primary sin is not Pride. His main problem isn't even a sin at all, it's the exact opposite. He has an overabundance of humility, which is to say, self-loathing. He's a typical gifted kid who crashed and started believing that no matter what he did, it would never be good enough, so why even bother trying. Arc 3 was all about him learning to start overcome this, and to see some value in himself and gain some self-respect.
If there's one sin he's primarily defined by, it's that he keeps comparing himself to other people he considers to be his betters, and can't possibly live up to, instead of trying to be his own person. In other words, it's Envy. That's why the canon story is the Envy route.

    • @deadline6149

Which make him even more real as a person, just the fact that he compares himself to his apparently "superhuman" dad feels so relatable.

    • @wymarsane7305
      @wymarsane7305 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@midouhanma It's less that he already does represent both sides, and more that he eventually has to. Most people are aware that each sin has its opposing virtue, but what's lost on most is that these virtues are not an ideal in and of themselves. It's the moderation between the two that makes a healthy sane person, and that's what most of his character development is gearing towards. It's most obvious with Pride and Humility, where his exaggerated arrogance is just a mask to cover his self-hatred, which ends up affecting him with the worst of both worlds, but the first time this is actually addressed is in arc 2, when he overworks himself into sickness. It's no coincidence that Sloth is the first major villain he takes down.

If it’s one sin, it would be greed, not envy. Even though he does feel envy of the strong people, his greed is what drives him to keep suffering to save everyone. Echidna and Roswaal even called him a greedy person, which says alot coming from them 😂

    • @sivinty_
      @sivinty_ 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

@KoopaTroopaa69 but we've seen the greed route where Subaru tries to save everyone and make everyone perfect. This is the envy route

    • @KoopaTroopaa69
      @KoopaTroopaa69 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@sivinty_ No, it’s not a “route” for Subaru. It’s not like the IF’s where Subaru has too much pride or wrath. The author meant that this is considered Envy since this is Satella’s route to her goal/point of RBD. The author said if he doesn’t reach this goal, then he will keep looping.
Subaru represents all sins in the main story, the if’s are just a over abundance of a sin. In the main story it’s on a more sane level.
But anyway, from what i said in my previous comment and some other things(spoilers), it’s clear that Greed represents Subaru’s desire to save everyone the most.
Going from the author’s Q&A him absorbing every sin will make him more “Human”, so that will either cause his personality to level out
or it means he regains his body in the shadow garden, idk.

To explain the “mean eyes” thing. In Japan, theres stigma around “sanpaku eyes” seeming mean, cold, or even evil. You can look it up to see examples, some celebrities have it. Billie Eilish, for example, has sanpaku eyes. Over here, they aren’t even acknowledged and some might look at them as being attractive. Its where the top of your eyelids kinda hang low and give you a sort of sharp or even tired look to your eyes. But yea Japan has this stereotype that its mean looking.
Subaru has sanpaku eyes and so does his mom. Its why people keep saying he looks mean. Basically Subaru has resting bitch face LOL thats the only equivalent thing I can compare it to. Its also why they compare his looks to his mom, its such a defining feature that people say he looks like his mom over his dad. Even tho he definitely looks like his dad

ね is a sentence-ending particle means 1. to ask for confirmation 2. to conveying friendliness 3. to sound feminine. I think it's the third meaning because apparently it plays the "Yakuwarigo" role here, emphasizing the gender and characteristics of his mom

His father will rehabilitate him himself and he managed to get subarus motivation back on going to School until he graduated on college and found a job, he got a wife that has rems personality and who really loves him too and he lives a normal and happy life.

Perhaps, like most people, he's capable of any of the "sinful" behaviors?? :O
But I'll say, the end of the last season was thematically about him rejecting his overwhelming pride. We'll see it manifest in him from the past, but it's what the current Subaru overcame previously, that reached its height during the Royal Selection meeting and his argument with Emelia afterwards.

    • @displaynamesup4345
      @displaynamesup4345 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

He is capable of having all sins. Betelgeuse only asked Subaru if he's pride because it's the only slot left on the archbishops. And he reeks of the witch's miasma. That's also why betelgeuse said he's filled endowed with immense love. It's because Satella is always putting her attention on him.

    • @displaynamesup4345

We have sloth when he didn't do anything about the witch cultists. When rem was getting swarmed he didn't do anything.
We got greed when subaru was negotiating with the other Royal candidates without anything to give as a benefit for them. That's why the other girl called him a greedy pig.
We have pride when subaru was getting ahead of himself after saving emilia and rem. He felt that he had to do something like some kind of main character or to prove himself to everyone.
We got envy when subaru was always having a grudge on of Julius despite him helping subaru from getting executed in the middle of the royal selection.

    Nagatsuki-sensei's livetweets/trivia for this episode.
Nagatsuki Tappei (Author of Re:Zero) likes to tweet as the episode airs. They usually include trivia and facts around that episode.
    Rough translation:
Well, right from the start we're looking around Subaru's room, and if you look carefully you can see figures and posters that were visible at the end of last episode, too...... I think that people with good intuition will be able to tell what they have in common.
Subaru's muscular, half-naked father is 'Kenichi Natsuki'. And, his mother, who you can tell shares his genes by the look in her eyes, is 'Naoko Natsuki'.
That's a vaster quantity of green peas than I'd imagined. It looks like she opened two cans of green peas.
In response to the question 'Why this mish-mash of Japanese and Western?', 'Your mother likes bread and miso shiru' is an answer that doesn't really answer anything, but if you understand how Naoko-san is here, you understand pretty much everything about her.
One unexpected thing is that Subaru is in the pajama camp, not the jersey camp, when he's sleeping.
When skipping school, being nervous until it's past time for homeroom, and being able to relax once that's past...... we've all had experiences like that.
About Kenichi's 'Whoa!!' when he moonwalked in, that became a reality thanks to Toriumi-san saying 'Ah, that's like Michael!' and putting in extra effort. It seems like the sort of thing Kenichi would do, and it got approved on the spot.
When making a vague, pale picture, rows of cherry trees are very nice.
To Kenichi, this town is his home he's been living in for a long time, even the cherry-tree caretaker is someone he's known since he was a child. Along with his friend Ikeda-san, they were well-known noisemakers in town. Ikeda-san went to Thailand.
He points the cola he was handed another direction and opens it. This being their guaranteed interaction is probably because in the past, he'd fallen into that trap time after time. When he's putting together an intricate trap, Kenichi would sometimes switch the labels, too.
For a father to ask his son 'Is there a girl that you like?' is the sort of instinctive approach used by a friendly father, but well, Kenichi is probably instinctively using it as a stepping stone towards talking about school.
It's often misunderstood, but due to the fact that he goes to a convenience store and such like it's normal, it's more correct to call him a 'truant' than a 'shut-in'.
I suspect that the sharp pain that he's feeling regularly is reflecting a fairly deep part of his psychology where he's wishing for things to stay the same. I don't think that change is always the best thing, but things that don't change require effort to not change, yeah.
About Subaru and Kenichi sitting as father and son on the bench, you can tell they're father and son at a glance from the way they look. As well, in hairstyle and other things that can be determined by oneself, Subaru is intentionally trying to be like his father. The look in his eyes is inherited from his mother.
When kids grow up quickly, it can be rough.
The place where Subaru fell down is the row of cherry trees where he's walking together with Kenichi.
About Subaru's failed high-school debut, Subaru has high-grade communication issues, so in highschool life that requires reading the room, he had it a little rough. He's handling it a little better in the other world because the people around him aren't students in the same year of school, but adults.
In the 'trial', the reason Subaru Natsuki was able to return to himself is thanks to two girls he met in the other world. I'm watching 'you', 'you' are watching me - that's his motivation.
Further, the lines have been pared down a bit, but Kenichi is saying 'If you want me to hate you, massacre half of humanity for no reason' to Subaru. Well, basically he's saying he can't.
The 'trial' has begun, he's regained himself, and Subaru was able to speak with Kenichi about things his complex wouldn't let him speak about before, but in the same way, there's also something that Subaru is now feeling directly. It's that he won't be able to return from the other world.
I won't explain it in detail at this stage, but please think of Subaru has having had an unconscious sense from the start that 'I won't be able to return from the other world'. He became aware of that unconscious awareness due to Kenichi's words.
He wasn't sure he'd be able to meet those expectations. But he's become able to say that. That's the growth of Subaru after going through arcs one through three.
But seeing the main character in a school uniform really feels odd......
The 'Su' written on the lid of the mayonnaise is because it's Subaru's personal mayonnaise. There's also 'Na' and 'Ke'; it's a mayo-lover household. What's more, it's a family where after a bottle of mayonnaise is finished, the lid is washed and kept in a collection.
She's a bubbly mother, but the first meeting between Naoko and Kenichi was bubbly as well, where Kenichi helped Naoko when she was about to be tricked by a bad person, and when he found the next day that she was about to be tricked by the same person in exactly the same way, he helped her again. That was the start of their relationship.
Incidentally, Subaru starting to eat mayonnaise was, just as Naoko imagined, he wanted to like something that both of his parents liked, but the reason that he still eats it is because he simply a born mayo-lover. Mayonnaise yum yum.
'You really are his son' is one of the curses within the story called Re: Zero, but curses can become something other than a curse. Well, the author does love curses! Since they sound strong!
People who love complicated, troublesome people like curses, too.
A mother and son parting ways on the side street on the way to school. They could have parted like that, without saying anything. If they'd parted without saying anything, he wouldn't have had to make mom sad. But, he couldn't stay silent. Because he had stayed silent, and regretted it.
There's no basis for what his mother was saying, and it doesn't make sense, but it seems unfair for her to say 'Because I'm your mother'. That's all she has to say, after all.
'What matters is the end' are fairly important words. If you continue joining us in Re: Zero, please continue to remember then for a long, long time.
At the start of episode one, Subaru headed out to the convenience store, and this is his exchange with his mother just before that. Well, they didn't interact, so maybe you can't call it an exchange. It's just Subaru's regret.
Incidentally, right after he's told 'Take care' by Naoko from episode one, if you look at the sink you can see a washed cup...
Even though she washed it for him, thinking that he didn't want to wash it, that was foolish of you, Subaru Natsuki.
Well then, here's the ending for the first time! This ending's expression, it just so emotional; isn't it great? It's wonderful to not fully understand the meaning.
However, in both the opening and ending, the 'witch' likes to take things away with her hair up......
Ah, however! I didn't see any commercials today, either! Truly, thanks to everyone for putting in all that work! And with that, that was season two, episode four 'Parent and Child'!
Those were Subaru Natsuki's parents. Today's story wasn't dramatic or anything, but it's the reason that Subaru Natsuki is the kind of person he is.
Incidentally, the row of cherry trees where Subaru and Kenichi were walking is a rather famous cherry spot. The author went there personally, took all kinds of pictures with his smartphone, and sent all kinds of them to the director, saying 'This kind of image!'. People who know will understand, but cherry trees are amazing.
And with that, thanks again for this week! Let's meet again next week, with a grinning Echinda in a school uniform! Well then, see you again!
