    Hi Rob. The ceramic used in the manufacture of the case is Zirconium Dioxide, as used by Omega in the 'Dark Side of the Moon' series of Speedmaster watches. It is a very hard material, and like many ceramics it can, in some circumstances, be prone to brittleness. The inclusion of a polymer is to reduce the brittleness & increase 'toughness' with a subsequent minor reduction in overall hardness. It also gives a different, less sterile, 'feel' to the material. On paper, at least, it would seem to be a good solution. The polymer used in the mix is derived from castor oil (hence the 'bio' tag) is a member of the Nylon family of plastics, and is known as 'Polyamide 11', or sometimes just as 'Nylon 11'.
    Time will tell (ouch), but I think this type of material will have an increasingly important role to play in applications such as this.

    I bought my first Swatch a while back, a limited edition with Bioceramic case. I did not expect how loudly it ticks (none of my other watches, even the quartz ones can be heard at a distance) and how lightweight and insubstantial it feels. However it has their typical plastic strap which is surprisingly comfortable.

    Nice posting on the MoonSwatch. You touched on it exactly. The watch is a $260 plus tax watch and not a $5000 watch. It also is a fun watch (and after these last 2 years of the Corona Virus, we need some fun). There are a lot of folks on the forum that whine about how this watch is a mockery of the Speedy pro. it is not at all, it is a fun spring/summer watch that looks cool. It is not going to dim the luster of the Speedy Pro, in fact i suspect more folks will buy a Speedy Pro in the future because they bought this watch. I also suspect a lot of the folks in those first day lines have a Speedy Pro or love Omega. They knew it was a fun watch. Now for myself, I consider it a Omega Speedmaster as it says so on the dial.

    • @xphyle
      @xphyle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No. The alignment problems they are speaking about cannot be adjusted by this. You can only adjust from one second to to next. But the people who are complaining have second hands that are misaligned BETWEEN seconds, so moving it by one second increments isn't going to fix the alignment problem

    • @zulu6ix290
      @zulu6ix290 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@xphyle between seconds or slightly off is a VERY common low cost quartz problem. Even more expensive quartz can do that. If ppl are surprised or complaining about that then they must be new to quartz movements

    • @Momo_8k
      @Momo_8k 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xphyle Your complaint is one of the reasons why I never hesitate buying quartz chronos but never consider quartz versions of no complication/date complication only watches. The least expensive quartz watch I've ever seen with a perfectly aligned seconds hand is the Longines VHP.

    If you think about what Swatch stands for, Second Watch, this watch is actually the true definition of that. Given that Maurice Lacroix also introduced a plastic watch for 2 1/2 times the Swatch price, it also gets more reasonable. We will see what will happen in the future with more collaborations maybe coming.

    • @fernandobernardo6324
      @fernandobernardo6324 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Obviously Swatch never meant that. It's just a combination of Swiss and Watch but I get your point.

    • @thomasa.243
      @thomasa.243 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fernandobernardo6324 No, Swatch really stands for "Second Watch". A lot of people think it is Swiss Watch but no, it is simply Second Watch. The idea was that in the 1970s/1980s people still had mechanical watches but they are more fragile compared to Quartz. So for their sporting activities (Tennis was one example back then), they made a light weight yet durable watch to wear to those occasions. Normally, you have your Longines but on certain rough and tough occasions you switch to your second watch, Swatch ;).

    Technically, this is a quarts tachometer watch movement dressed up to look like the Omega Speedmaster. Swatch being part of Omega obviously has the rights to copy the original look. I am sure this watch is a high quality quartz watch for the price. Being a quartz watch it should have a much greater overall accuracy than what any mechanical watch movement can achieve. Typically medium to low cost quartz watches of today can be better than 5 to 8 seconds per month. The original mechanical Speedmaster was doing very well if it could keep to better than averaging 10 seconds per day.
    I have the Speedmaster Mark II with the 861a movement. I bought this watch in 1974. I was using it along with navigation. I was flying aircraft during the early to late 70s. I kept this watch in mint condition. I get it maintained every 4 to 5 years at an authorized Omega service place. It works like when I first bought it. If well maintained the mechanical Speedmaster can last for more than a lifetime. Excellent watch!
    I have thought about buying the Swatch version just for fun. The Moon version looks so much like the original Speedmaster. I would get the Moon version.

    To believe, that you might get an idea how a real Omega Moonwatch might look and feel by buying this plastic thingy, that’s beyond delusional. Go to an Omega AD. They’re usually decent human beings, in contrary to Rolex ADs. They’ll let you try one on. Or try the chinese Phylida homages, which are much closer to the originals, much cheaper AND available.
    260$ is too much for what is offered here. It’s a 100$ watch and your paying the rest for the Logo.

    These pieces are near perfect imo; I can get a weird/interesting Speedy for not too much, and maybe later get a more traditional speedy reduced as a luxury piece.

    The two types of watches I typically steer clear of, 'Hype watches' (like this one) and 'Limited Editions'. These are also the two types of watches that people will stand in line for and then flip on ebay for three times the MSRP. A 'Mission to the Moon' variant is currently selling on ebay for $3,250.00 plus $20 shipping. Good luck out there.
