  • Peter Hitchens shares his inimitable take on society's problems.
    Has the breakdown in the institution of marriage left children in a lonely, Dickensian hell?
    Is it possible to be a monarchist without adoring individuals of the royal family?
    Should imperial measurements be revived in the UK?

    In 2019 the number of people getting married fell to the lowest level since records began. What should be done to reverse this trend?

      Some sort of magnets...hear me out. When you get to the age of 30, and you aren't married. You have a magnet grafted to your back. Positive for women, negative for men. The first person you fly towards when you step into the street, you have to marry within one week. Laws will have to be made, as well as by-laws to protect drivers who, of course will kill people flying across the street. Just a thought ladies and gentlemen.

    Peter is an outstanding intellect and a courageous man. I would be so grateful for an opportunity to talk to him for just 15 minutes. I have so many questions. I wish greatly that his mission to educate the west on our failings since the cultural revolution had been more graciously received, but the fact it wasn't is a sign that he is right and I understand why he says he has given up. Few people seem to understand his concerns come from a place of compassion and kindness.

    I think these debates have just become a bit too cosy - with Mike just nodding along to Peter on everything(although I do think it's odd that he seems to agree with him on the Ukraine versus Russia conflict on this show, but on his other editions then he practically starts spouting "let us take on Putin, defend the West and the Ukrainians, etc.") - he doesn't really challenge him on some things, like he did in the very early editions.

      You’re right, their initial exchanges back in 2020 were most adversarial. That said, I reckon you can learn more about what someone has to say if they don’t have to spend their entire radio appearance defending themselves. It’s one of the virtues of long form podcasts.

    • @arienai_
      @arienai_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally I quite enjoy it being more of a relaxed discussion than a back and forth debate. The viewpoints and ideas are novel enough on certain topics compared to the popular discourse to still make it an interesting listen. I'd normally be inclined to agree with you but I don't think there's any particular shortage of Peter Hitchens being involved in adversarial debate if that's what you're looking for.

    When decimal currency came in 1d sweets generally became 1p sweets. That's x2.3 overnight inflation, which is a lot of child's pocket money. Even shops which offered two items for a new penny made a third of a p on the transaction. Raging inflation in the 1970s compounded the issue to make 1960s pricing of common items and the 70s equivalent unrecognisable.

    Anyone who has every done any construction work will tell you that metric does not divide easily in half- ie, 1/2 of 10= 5, 1/2 of 5 = 2.5 1/2 of 2.5 = 1.25 etc etc.... Whereas, 1/2 of 12 =6, 1/2 of 6 = 3 etc. In the main, Metric makes larger numbers is asier, and smaller units much more fiddly and fractional/decimalised. Either can be converted of course, but that, when the rubber hits the road, is NOT the point. PS never post anything technical from your phone in the rain!

    The metric system connects volume, mass and length quite nicely. 1000 cm^3 has a mass of one kilogram. One millilitre is 1 cm^3 and has a mass of one gram if it's water. These things are a bit beyond this pair. If we didn't use SI units all physics equations would be up the swanny!

    Fatherlessness is in large part caused by the undermining of religious marriage. Men are still expected to protect and provide for their families, as they should be. But we live in a society where a woman can decide to renege on her marriage vows and leave whenever she decides, irrevocably fracturing the family, regardless of what her husband thinks about that, and be supported by the state in doing so. This clearly discourages intelligent and considerate men from investing in and sacrificing for women in a way they once would. All to a backdrop of what Peter would describe as the religiosity of "selfism" and we have a society in which children suffer through terribly insecure childhoods and in many cases grow to be troubled adults as a result. There has been no revolutionary movement for men approximating that of feminism for women, the man's role is still to lead the family and be absolutely responsible for the protection and provision, but men are longer given the legal or moral authority to do so. So why take the risk? I would love to get married and live a traditional family life, it's all I've ever considered to be important, but it seems nigh impossible in modern life.

    i am part of the demographic cohort in which the females were actively propagandized about the desirability of Thoroughly Modern Millie. So I know a lot of single women who pursued a career and now, are sliding into their 60's with no partner or children. Given their age they may have a surviving elderly aunt or brother but mostly they have no family. They are scared shitless.
