It was a jab at Leary. Leary stole several of Hicks smoking and Jim Fix jokes, some of them word for word. Miller knows this and looks for a way to bring his name up and Hicks responds by saying Europe is about 5 years behind us on the comedy scene, meaning that Leary can get away with doing same bits that Hicks has been doing for 5 years already. They're both aware of his joke theft.
Not seen this clip before. Its sad he's no longer around - imagine what his youtube channel would be like. On the bright side though, every one of his routines is as relevant now as it was then and its great that a whole new generation are able to hear him tell it like it is. Many thanks for posting.
Carlin and Hicks are my dudes. Got me through some shit times with their insights and humor. Love the dry delivery so much that I've adopted it myself. Legends.
Agreed. And you, sir are one cool dude for saying that. You're not "The Dude", because The Dude abides. But, you're definitely +A+ cool dude. 👍🤷♀️✌️❤️🕊️

greatsajby I don't know if you meant for that to be but that was an enlightening thought you had, because.. *drum roll* it's true, and furthermore... Hicks showed many signs of buddhahood, or christ consciousness or whatever you want to call it but my point is hopefully clear. It's wonderful seeing how much others still love Hicks even today, gives a little hope to me that one day his message will shine through and heal each individual on this planet with warm laughter, and deeper understanding that he provided. It's not about the messenger though, it's about the essence he displayed, and I think he would agree with me
Leary did steal a bunch of Hick's material. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery", but I think the problem for HIcks was that Leary was a sell out and Hicks wasn't. Hicks didn't care for Letterman and to me that is a big plus on his side.
Leary was a sell out and Hicks wasn't. I don't think that mattered to him or me , he was a sell out in the UK ! Bill will be remembered, Leary not as much, although love both of them.
Ednerd Leary didn't imitate Hicks though. He copied him and stole his material and tried to make it his own because he probably couldn't stand on his own two comedic feet. Leary's mediocre for doing that and everyone knows Hicks is a fuckin' legend. Great parting shot on Leary here.
bill Hicks!!! love him...my ex turned me onto this legend. I was/am stand-up comedy nerd but I only had a faint memory of him when he was alive. When I met the ex he was obsessed with bill through the band Tool. This set is amazing and that Denis Leary burn was awesome 😂
@@smileybubbles9894 There weren't many laughs, but they cheered that line. So they appreciated it, but didn't find it that funny. Good enough audience for me. They could have booed him for it.
Yeah, but his point was we’re all gonna become such lazy/paranoid fucks that we order everything from a sedentary position. He’s clearly not predicting a pandemic, so it doesn’t stack-up to suggest he was being some kind of ‘prophet’ in that sense. 😳 He just noted the lazy/paranoid fucker trend and took it to its logical conclusion.
He once said he filled stadiums in the UK and Australia then would come home to the US where he could barely fill a bar, he probably just didn't realize it til later.
@Cognitive Chaos: Yes - me! I'm British and have loved Bill since being introduced to his material in the mid 1990s. His intellect is without question, and his honesty and truthfulness are to be admired. The fact that he also happened to be blisteringly funny is the icing on the cake. And Van Hammersly is correct - Bill hated nationalism. To quote the great man himself: "It's a round world last time I looked" I recently discovered an Australian comic called Steve Hughes who shares some similarities with Bill's style. I'd recommend checking him out, particularly his show 'While It's Still Legal' which can be found in full here on TH-cam.
i love how someone gave leary a message at one of his stand up show's saying how bill hick's sent leary a carton of cigarettes with a note attached to it that says "Sorry I couldn't get these to you sooner."
So, Bill Hicks is a fucking genius. And I also love the moments between Dennis and Bill, cracking each other up, two comedians enjoying each other. Cheers.
Oh I love it. Bill doesn't even set out to have a dig at Leary, but then he realises the beauty of the bitchslap... gold. I've just watched my beloved Bill laugh his ass off in this clip about 5 times. Priceless. Thanks for posting.

It's so freaking stupid, and trust me, it makes people quit the bar-scene before they consider quitting smoking!
Hicks was performing at 15, and was one smart dude. I couldn't imagine a smart and influential talent living any longer than he did. He was like Lennon, geniuses don't tend to live long, which is kinda lucky since this world sucks.
It's seven years late but he said "Hands up if you've never been polled." There was no contradiction as as as soon as they put their hands up they went from "not having been polled" to "having been polled."

there's nothing sincere about stealing peoples material. you have that saying wrong
I like how you can see his jokes develop, using the same punch line with a better joke as he jokes on. The joke about the dominos pizza truck.

the Jackie Onasis joke always draws such awkward giggles. so awesome!!
