    Denny O'Neil's Kryptonite Nevermore was actually really interesting because it not only rendered all kryptonite inert, but also came with the price of reverting Superman back to his Golden Age level of strength, removing most of his powers except super-speed and super-strength.
    The story also introduced concepts like Cadmus Labs, Intergang, and the New Gods getting involved, long before Crisis.
    Actually, I'd like the story to be covered on this channel.

    • @edwinsolis5710
      @edwinsolis5710 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Denny O’Neill’s attempts to weaken Superman was only a marketing push, and it didn’t actually make Superman that much weaker. He could still Time Travel, and some of those stories had Superman go faster than Infinity (Superman: War World by Len Wein and Jim Starlin)
      And Cadmus wasn’t officially a thing until Post-Crisis. Back then it was called The DNA Project and Jack Kirby was the one who made it all happen during his tenure with Superman and Jimmy Olsen.

    Got one of the old tropes in there about "there are exactly five different kinds of kryptonite, each a different color and each with its own specific effect". Several quick panel flashes of versions of that. But missed out the later one that "nothing can affect Superman except kryptonite and magic" (mostly to make Mxyzptlk a real threat), and here the mystic's hex turns out to be one of those masquerading as the other.
    Oh, and I see someone below speaking about modifying green K to affect humans. It actually did--shortly pre-Crisis, I think it was--when Lex Luthor took to wearing a signet ring with a kryptonite stone to taunt Superman, and over time developed bone cancer from the radiation.

    My true exposure to Kryptonite it was to the '78 movie, then in Smallville, with different colors blowing my mind, like, I didn't know about red's bonkers side effects until later, but I always did like "red makes you lose your inhibitions" in the series, a bit more consistent.
    Followed by Blue K, that takes your powers while being around it, Silver K, which makes you crazy, Black K, that... splits you into 2 beings? and Gold K (which is the same in comics) takes your powers permanently... which you never see used on the show.
    It's probably my favorite bit of lore, does every Superman type need one, no, but it's interesting for Superman.

    Just a small correction: while Superman #233's transmutation of Kryptonite into iron (a 1971 story) was never reversed as such, Kryptonite resumed being a regular part of Superman's stories starting with 1977's Superman #311. It was a main plot point for most of the next year, until in #323 it was revealed that Krypton-two (created in issue #255) had exploded as well and became the source for a whole new batch of Green Kryptonite.
    But don't worry about the Kandorians; they never moved into Krypton-Two, but rather into New Krypton aka Rokyn, which was only created in 1979.
    Yeah... Superman lore can be a bit arcane at times.

  • @KennAKALeo

    There was an unpublished Superman story, circa 1939, by Jerry Siegel, that WOULD have been the first appearance of Kryptonite. It glowed green, and were fragments of Krypton (which was known by that name to Earth scientists, already), and it negated Superman's powers. Though it was called "k-metal". A few pages of the story are reprinted in the "Steranko History of Comics" vol. 1 by Jim Steranko. It was also said to be green on the radio. I don't know why it took the comics so long to catch up.

    My favorite stories involving Kryptonite were on the 90's animated series. There Superman and S.T.A.R. Labs develop a lead lined suit to protect Superman from Kryptonite. It inevitably often gets ripped, but the idea was that Superman would take precautions to avoid being harmed by it.
    Post-Crisis, DC reduced the types of Kryptonite to just green, except for a story where Mr. Mxyzptlk created Red Kryptonite. This ban on other types of Kryptonite lasted almost two decades! Some of the types of Kryptonite make no sense (I'm looking at you Gold Kryptonite), but having three types makes sense. Green Kryptonite would be the default, weakening and killing Superman, Red Kryptonite mutating him for wacky stories, and Blue Kryptonite for Bizarro to not be afraid of.

    • @ProjektTaku
      @ProjektTaku ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually think the random effects of red kryptonite are superfluous, since magic can do essentially the same thing. Also in one story where superman, ultraman, and the challengers of the unknown team up, the antimatter Mxy reveals a red giant cosmic storm is the reason red kryptonite has mutagenic effects, so you could just use that.

    I've also heard of the radio play story was how Kryptonite was introduced.
    I loved the re-cap. I never read the story where it was introduced into the comics continuity before.
    One thing you didn't talk about was when Superman went back in time to Krypton about why he was drawn without colour. The Pre-Crisis laws of physics regarding time travel stated something like you can't co-exist with your previous self, so when travelling to an earlier point of your life, you would automatically become a phantom, unable to touch or interact with the world of the past. Of course you would be solid if you went further back before you were born. I'm assuming the same thing would happen if you went forward in time further along your life span.
    Post Crisis, the time travel rules had changed. Initially they had stated that using the same method to travel through time multiple times would damage your body, so to avoid that you'd have to use different methods each time. That idea did fade over the years, but I appreciate that there needed to be a mechanism to make time travel more difficult. Also Post Crisis, Clark was not able to travel through time unaided, though this wasn't established yet in Booster Gold's origin telling, Superman threatened to take Booster back to his own time.
    Anyways, back to Kryptonite. Post Crisis, Kryptonite was really rare. I guess when you think about it, when anything in space explodes, it's mass is scattered in all directions. The fact that there was so much to Batman.

    I had to go back and watch the vid again, as after you said you were going to Metropolis to start a gang. What is your gang name? Would it have the word "Casually" in it? If so what kind of 'talent' would you draw (shooters, robbers, graft, etc.). How would you kill a helpless Superman? So....many....questions!!

    If it is still on line, you want to check out "K metal from Krypton". It was a competed version of a story started by Seigel & Schuster but shelved by DC (National at the time) in 1939 and is the first concept of what would be Kryptonite.

    Periwinkle Kryptonite
    In the Tiny Titans continuity, Brainiac hit Superman with a Periwinkle Kryptonite ray. It turned his skin and costume periwinkle and caused him to briefly charm Lois Lane with charm and dance skills. Later that day, Lois used a piece of physical Periwinkle Kryptonite on Clark Kent, achieving the same effect.

    I'm surprised they didn't go with the battery route.
    Just say Superman's powers are fueled by the energy he gets from the sun. When he uses his powers he drains a certain amount of that energy. Once he's out of energy he's significantly, or completely, depowered until he can recharge.
    Would have given writers a lot more freedom to create dramatic situations. His power could be scaled according to what they needed at the time. The only thing needed to bring him down to a needed level would be a number of events that occurred in the background.

    Siegel & Shuster once created a story that involves a form of Kryptonite which predates the radio show's introduction. In it, a comet made of "K-metal" -- yes, a fragment of Krypton-- comes close to Earth. As it neared, Superman got progressively weaker and believed he was about to die from its radiation. However, the comic book editors spiked the story because S&S also had Lois finding out that Clark is Superman and he accepted her as his ongoing partner and confidant. The editors preferred to keep the Clark-Lois-Superman triangle going. And the rest is history.

    I imagine that if Darkseid, Doomsday, and Mongul had existed back then there wouldn't have been a need to create Kryptonite. There were no physical threats to Superman at that time, I don't believe even Bizzaro and the Phantom Zone Criminals had been introduced. And without a physical threat Superman was seriously OP! Evan more so than he usually is.

    I recall a story about jewel kryptonite from the Jewel mountains of Krypton. The story is centered on phantom zone criminals creating this version for evil stuff. The long forgotten Zone criminal Jax Ur has his back story fleshed out. I'm not sure if Jewel K was used again. It seemed like a convenient throw away plot contrivance. I have not read the story in several years, I think Jimmy Olsen gets hypnotized. He was always a good candidate for mind control. Thank you for the entertaining videos.

    But cryptonite works because it's a great way to stop an unstoppable force bubble force and have it both been extremely rare And easy to come by due to just how rocks can travel around the world.
