Appreciate you being so honest on a sponsored video! Im excited for this release but Im a sucker for these types of games. The pitfalls of these games are unfortunately the normal barriers that keep people away from the dungeon crawling subgenre. They are just uninviting for the average player and are almost always a grindfest and barebones as far as explanation of how the systems and skills work. Growing up playing the old Ultima and original console RPGs, that fits in just fine with what I originally loved about games but I can see how most people would be a hard pass.

Hmmm, I like the genre sometimes (WIth Etrian Odyssey V being one of my favorite games). But I'm also slow to try them out because they often require a big commitment.

Here's hope Class of Heroes 3 will see an english release since from what I remember there was supposed to be an english version in the works for ps3 I think? But got cancelled.

Yep, sadly Gaijinworks never got COH3 out the door. :( Acquire / ZeroDiv clearly have some sort of interest in the series since there was that weird RTS game in the COH universe that came out fairly recently, and now the re-release of COH1 & 2. I'd love if we officially got COH3!!

With all the dungeon scrawlers getting remakes. I wonder if From Software finally hears the calling and reboots King's field.
Despite it's big flaws King Field 4 counts as one of the best RPGs at its time. I would even say exploration and atmosphere is better as in the souls games.
The dungeon you explore feels dangerous, scary and you can find secrets everywhere. Each Item you find feels special or like an upgrade.
With everything From Software lerned. I think a true dungeon scrawler or Kings Field 5 could be a game of the year.
I mean they managed to revive Amored Core without discarding it's identity, why should it not work with KF?

      @BacklogBattle  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

That would be crazy if we got a modern Kings Field! I’d be interested to see what that looks like

@@BacklogBattle They were very ambitious with going first person at it's time. Most of the issues the game had are menues, translation errors or controls. But games advanced a lot and we saw a lot of first person Rpgs that succeeded.
I think nowadays they could easily come up with way to make the first person battle system better to control and a little more dynamic.
KF also is the source of From Softwares success it feels weird they not even tried to make a remake of it but keep referencing it in all their games.

I've heard that in Japanese culture it is very disrespectful to continue working on a series without its original creators, or at least their blessing.
I believe that King's Field is neglected BECAUSE of how much respect Miyazaki has for the series and what it represents.

I started out not liking these games, but then i came to appreciate them.

Maybe one day I should actually give a dungeon crawler a chance...at least then I'll know for sure if it's my thing. I feel like they aren't, but hey, who knows!

Great review Alex! I occasionally play these kinds of dungeon crawlers. Most recently, Undernauts. Excellent game all around, but I did hit a difficulty spike somewhere around halfway, at one of the boss battles….. and wound up drifting to play something else. On some level, this is a “me” issue, as I realized I could have engaged with additional systems to surmount that portion. But I was a bit fitagued and just felt like moving on to something else.
That said, these games can be very absorbing. I still recall playing one of the Wizardry games on PS2 back in the day. Really puts the player in the mind space of a challenging dungeon.

I’ve only recently gotten into these games between the Labyrinth of Refrain games and the Etrian Odyssey trilogy, but i kinda like it. Even if mapping can be annoying at times with all the backtracking and possibly running into crazy strong monsters.

Great review and these were my points with the games too. They are for a niche audience that needs to know what they're getting into, especially the first game. 2G improved on just about every aspect from the 1st game, but still has that level of grind, patience, and understanding needed to enjoy the game

I tried the original waaaay back in the day and bounced off it pretty quickly. I love Etrian Odyssey, but the controls and gameplay felt outdated and clunky and lacked EO's charm. I might pick this up from your description of 2, though. Thanks for the review!

The first dungeon crawler in first person I've played was Mary Skelter Nightmare, I did like a lot of it, but I can't say it got me in the genre, I do like to experiment this out of my zone games once in a while, I don't really beat all the games I try, but I like to try when theres something that hooks me, this game I would totally a demo, official or not, but I don't see myself buying it since I'm not realy a fan of complex battle systems, I do like diversity but I have a limit on how complex I can handle n have fun

I still struggle to find enjoyment from first-person dungeon crawlers myself, but I'd like to love these types of JRPGs one day, because I feel like I'm missing out on some great stories and games!

While I was initially turned off by them, I've really started to appreciate first person dungeon crawlers over the last few years.
Looking back, a part of me wishes I could have gotten the very limited PSP and PS3 physicals, but I will happily take them on modern platforms :D

After playing Etrian Odyssey III for quite some time (couldn't be bothered to finish it, I absolutely hate the "teleport to random spot" sort of mechanic), I've been looking for something similar, and this just released on Steam so I'm interested :D
