  • Highways come up with a fabulous working solution for Rufford Ford but locals and The Mill have other ideas.
    Have people forgotten this is a publicly funded highway for everyone to use…

    I would have thought that permanently fixed "traffic calming" concrete barriers at both sides of the ford was the answer. Measure a HGV and tractor width , leave a foot either side, and allow traffic through VERY slowly. Just make it a "single lane entrance and exit", nobody would be able to approach it at great speed without risking pranging their car into the blocks .....

      What a driver does on his own property with his car is his personal business. As you stated. However, all bets are off with public roads as the public is directly, or indirectly, paying a price with stupid drivers writing off their cars with risk of injury or death with stranded drivers, increased insurance premiums, risk to emergency personnel in rescuing drivers and environmental damage with cars stranded in the ford until the car is retrieved.
      As your lawyer will attest, you do not have an absolute right to use public roads at any time.

    It would be nice to think a bridge and deepening the ford. However, the bridge would be unsightly to the hotel. And deepening just the ford and a bit either side, would do little for overall drainage. Water will find its over level. Takes years to get a bridge built. Councils don't have bridge money. A footbridge over the bypass near me, they had to bid for the funding just to do the survey to bid for the actual bridge.

      The bridge would have to be significantly higher than the current footbridge, the water was higher than that recently. That's a significant bridge and significant money for a very minor road.

    There are ford's like this all around the country and they operate without any issues, why? I'll tell you why, Because they haven't the social media attention this ford has. The people with cameras are the cause of all the issues here, they made it famous they put it in the spotlight the drivers act for the cameras. The people with the cameras caused all this! This "solution" is a little absurd. Why not use gates?
    When the water level is above a certain (realistic) level, the gates are shut. When the level drops, the gates are open.
    A much simpler solution, as used around the world, far better than knee-jerking with concrete blocks.

    • @ANDREWLEONARDSMITH
      @ANDREWLEONARDSMITH 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Why all this fuss over what is a mere puddle compared to the likes of Lindersfarm & Mersea island which are far more deadly & dangerous as they are TIDAL & are MILES across & have claimed lives & vehicles yet no measures have been put in place to prevent acess when it is flooded at these deadly locations.The best & simplest solution for Rufford is to raise the level of the roadway via a " Ford bridge" so the river can flow underneath the roadway so only extreme high waters would flood over the bridge & then would only be a few inches deep if they got their calculations right. This has been done a many other ford locations in the UK so why not here? those who are trying to close it down should move their efforts to Lindersfarm & The Strood which are far more deadly & dangerous to vehicles & people as action is Needed at these deadly locations to BAN VEHICLES & PEOPLE COMPLETELY when the water covers ANY part of the causeway which like Rufford is full of videos on youtube of idiots crossing in vehicles in what are DEADLY TIDAL WATERS.By comparison Rufford is Non Tidal & is not considered Dangerous to people &vehicles as it is only a few yards across & no one has ever lost their life here.

      @@ANDREWLEONARDSMITH That would be a permanent solution to a temporary problem, but worthwhile.
      If nothing else, it would stop the knee jerking with concrete blocks. As you'd said, time & efforts would be better spent sorting much more dangerous locations.
      I'm not familiar with Lindersfarm, Mersea Island & The Stroud, as I'm in Australia. I am, however, very familiar with similar issues here, with Muppets trying it on when it's flooded & the equally ridiculous filming for "likes" on social media.
