Trail legs at last. So, congrats on thr FT, PT, and BMT. AT away! It was really cool of Becky to send the resupply box 📦 and the trail provides fuel when desperately needed. Enjoy your well earned beer and zero. I look forward to your AT journey.
Welcome to a Georgia Spring with all those chilly nights. That swinging bridge over the Toccoa River is a famous Instagram North Georgia must and therefore I have never seen it. As I type this it’s your zero day on Saturday, and we just had 1 inch hail in Atlanta at 8.30pm. I hope your aren’t in a tent. BTW, we were the backpackers you met in Cheaha Wilderness. I was in the X-mid. My daughter found your channel and I have been keeping up with your days. Good Luck!
Congratulations on reaching the AT and Springer! So today you are zeroing I guess. If you check the last 2-3 minutes of Craig Mains TH-cam videos (2021 thru hike playlist) he always gives a daily update with his mile where he camps and he always camps away from the shelters and other hikers, so might give you some ideas. Your mileage might be pretty similar to his. Most of the blue blazes on the AT are worth the few tenths off trail unless you are socked in with fog. Good luck, and enjoy. As a slower hiker I can tell you that I was always happy to step aside for people coming up behind me as long as they let me know about 30 feet back so I had time to calmly move aside for them. Otherwise, it was a shock and a startle when they were suddenly on my 6 like a horse in the gate wanting to take off around me. Just a little etiquette thing that younger, fitter, faster hikers might not think about. We older hikers tend to trip and fall down when we get surprised from behind, lol. Have fun, and thanks for sharing your journey with us.
Wow ! Just 12 days ago I caught up to you leaving Cave Spring, Just inside of Georgia. Your really doing some miles. Keep it up and you'll hit Maine in no time. Keep safe and stay Healthy.. don't push too hard .. ENJOY THIS ADVENTURE . I'm enjoying following along, just wish I could do it for real .
Thanks :) Currently 50 some miles down the AT. I try and keep as up to date as possible and upload when I have around 15 minutes worth of video. Hopefully I’ll find a place with good enough signal to upload an episode in the next few days
Congrats on a well deserved beer indeed! Benton McKay section finished. Solitude definitely finished! But resupply suddenly lots easier and many, many fewer dog problems! On to Maine. We are with you all the way (vicariously, although I plan to hit the first bit of the AT with my two sons in June, just because I can!). Hike on! Tortoise
Buc-ees!!! (Byron's shirt). Congrats on getting to the AT. I always follow one person a year doing the AT. Been following since January so I am getting bonus trails this year!!
"Trashpassers will be Prostituted", had to rewind a few times to read that sign. Funny how our mind will sometimes see something other than what is there. Reminds me of the occasional "Sorry We're Open" sign, such as on the door of a trailtown restaurant in the movie "A Walk in the Woods".
Looks like the crews did a great job clearing all the blowdowns from when I went through in November! Funny you mention the climbs, NOBO past where got on is where you really start to climb.
You could see someone had put in some major work clearing the trail. Climbing comment was just in comparison to the Georgia section of the Pinhoti. The ECT starts out dead flat and you only really start seeing hills in northern Alabama
YaY! I just looked at the radar and whooh what a wide swath that storm is cutting. Most of the early birds I'm following are up in the Shenandoah valley area, looking forward to an ice cream binge. One who used the first half has left for the CDT and is somewhere on trail. You have vindicated my larger stove choice, grams be ah, hmmm...more stable is my point.😉👍
Hey congrats making it to Springer! It's getting real pretty the further north you go. Been loving every video since key west. You got your legs, so the only thing you gotta be careful of is staying too long in one place talking to people!
Congratulations. You should be behind the "Bubbles" when you get on the AT. It is so crowded this year, that many are stealth camping as much as 1/2 mile off trail. Be extra careful with your hygiene. Good Luck, Rick
Great videos...you give a great viewpoint on the whole hiking experience . I hope to follow your footsteps shortly Bmt looks a lot better trail than I was imagining you are smoking the miles. Safe hiking...
“If at all possible, I recommend not sweating as much as me.” “This would be a really pleasant day if it weren’t for the bitterly cold, bloody wind.” #masochistisms #masochistquotes Congrats on nailing down the BMT! 116 days Key West to Springer Mountain, you’re hiking with afterburners!
Congratulations on finishing the Pinhoti and BMT! I hope you enjoy the social aspect of the AT. Seems like there is a bumper crop of thruhiker hopefuls this year because last year was such a bust.
I’m really looking forward to getting to interact with folks fresh out in the trail. Always a bit different energy vs those who have been out for longer. Also as someone who was hiking last year on the PCT it was actually an awesome experience if you were after more of a wilderness type experience
Hey thats so awesome. I been following your hike since day one. You are a major inspiration for me to start hiking the AT. I started on April 5th and just recently crossed into North Carolina. Im super slow and can only do about 8 miles or so a day. I hope to get a chance to say hi when u pass me by. Currently also zeroing out in Franklin right now. But super antsy to get back out there. Gonna try to start doing 10 mile days. Hope to see you soon.
I’m moving at my normal pace and what happens happens. I have a tighter schedule than a lot of the folks out here due to the Canada thing. Also I don’t have the temperament for taking it too easy :) At least so far the AT trail has gone fairly smoothly. Managed a 24 mile day out of Springer
I own one and I’ve seen a lot more along the trail but they really don’t work well unless your sitting still with clear sky. Any partial blockage of the panel drops the generated power down significantly and modern cell phones don’t deal well with that. Basically requires you to have a battery to charge off the panel. That’s why you generally see them discarded for Anker battery bricks in the first few weeks of any long hike
Yeah I hate picking up a rock to weigh donw my tent and finding someone's mess. it is just way to hard for some people to be considerate to others and our earth that they can't clean up after themselves it makes me crazy.
Karma and trail magic worked together to provide a canister for food and coffee. ☸ Over the past few years TH-cam has been both a blessing and a curse for the AT and other trails. On the one hand more people are getting out and supporting the trails but the number of people that don't respect the trail or other hikers has increased. As you mentioned not following LNT practices TP under every rock. Be extra careful now that you are following behind the bubble and what they left behind don't want to become a victim of noro. Peace!
DOGS LOVE 💝 CHEESE. Have you ever tried tossing doggie treats or some cheese wrapped up in a tortilla? Just thinking outside the box. (Or would giving them food only serve as a positive reinforcement reward for chasing after hikers?)
Sitting here in that rain you dreaded for today. And it's cold. And all I can say about the weather here right now is blahhhhhh. Still available to run you to Gburg or wherever when you get to the Smokies. Or at least bring you some breakfast or something at Collins Gap...maybe lunch at Newfound Gap? All ya gotta do is holler at me in Instagram. I'm One Lane Road Photography on there.
I follow this guy Quicksand, doing his 3rd trek on the AT....and he usually manages to find stealth spots away from the busy shelters. Lol...cat holes....Be happy....you only have to bare your butt "sometimes"....women have to EVERYTIME.... :-\ Oh.....danger of major tornado activity in your area today.....stay safe !! Congratulations on your finish of the BMT and your entrance onto the AT...."FINALLY" ! lol. It's been a long road so far....less roads ahead for a good ways now... ;-)
At the time it was sold as the Anker 20k speed. Of course you have to have the appropriate wall plug that can deliver enough power to charge in that amount of time
It’s the small box wine you can sometimes buy at Dollar General and elsewhere. Since it’s in cardboard it’s easy to pack in and you can collapse it down afterwards. You can see it in the video right before my dinner spilled

Yay! Now the real adventure begins... Will our hero adapt to the crowds, or will he be wishing he was back on the road walks and with the dogs:))

Yep, riding out the storm in Dahlonega today.
Congratulations on making it to the AT!!! Oddly enough, I'm going to miss the relative solitude of the other trails. #NeverSatisfied

Ramdino Roaming the Trails talked about you today.
Awesome, back to church! Congratulations on safely getting to the AT. Can’t wait to see more organic life

"I live on roads, connected by trails", man that's how it felt hiking the Florida Trail sometimes. Nice line.

So great to meet you at Springer and congrats on doing the longest approach trail ever. Happy trails on the AT!
An exceedingly well deserved beer! I am excited to follow along this next chapter of your trek 👍
Great video, and no coffee is a bummer,I think that’s illegal in some states!! Or should be. Thanks for taking me along, keep on trekkin!
Matt, best of luck along the AT. So many people to talk to now...so little time ..lol.. be safe

Amazing that it was so cold so far south in late April. Soon enough, you’ll enjoy that other East Coast treat of hazy, hot and humid.
There you seam to be able to smile. ✌️👊
Your chilly middle of the week gave Ohio 3 inches of snow, that melted the next day, Congrats on reaching the AT. Halfway to Canada.
Really enjoying your journey, congrats on reaching the AT!

It was really well established compared with the Georgia Pinhoti. Just expect more up and down

I’m section hiking, starting Clingmans Dome, north 120 miles on May 9, just might have a chance to meet ya
You should look into the small portable solar panels for your charging needs! They have USB ports and will charge everything you have in no time.

And here's me thinking you should change your trail name to Kermit!

Hurray, the AT! The markings are “white blazes”, and you’ll get plenty of ups and downs now. Enjoy your zero, you deserve it.
DOGS LOVE 💝 CHEESE. Have you ever tried tossing doggie treats or some cheese wrapped up in a tortilla? Just thinking outside the box. (Or would giving them food only serve as a positive reinforcement reward for chasing after hikers?)
I’d say the latter. And since there were attacks that resulted in injuries I didn’t want to contribute to the situation

no dinner ?
there fire wood all around you - start a fire !! bushcraft style.
Were you using NB20000 power bank?
I didn’t get the NB 20k until a few months ago. Before that I had an Anker 20k with the ability to charge in 3-4 hours
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes that is fast! What charger was that?
At the time it was sold as the Anker 20k speed. Of course you have to have the appropriate wall plug that can deliver enough power to charge in that amount of time

Currently at 1,944. Well, 1945 I suppose since I went back to the Springer parking area
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes That’s crazy! Rock on!

Wouldn't you just make a cooking fire for coffee without fuel?
