There was a TV campaign when they brought -Darth Vader- the green cross code man out of retirement to teach _adults_ about aafe crossing the road without their noses buried in their phones. Did it work? No, so they've try to change the Highway Code rules to make the adults who do this totally unresponsable for their own behaviour and blame the other road users for their recklessness.

How can traffic join _without_ merging? But whenever a duel _[sic]_ carriageway ends, there must, by definition, be a merging of the lanes. To prevent such merging, all dual carriageways need to be single laned single carriageway roads. After all, there must be a reason there are two lanes there in the first place...

back in the 1980's I drove a road sweeper from the early 70's on the surface dressing gangs. The early ones had two sets of controls and you were supposed to drive to the job sitting on the right, then throw a lever to swap the hydraulics and sweep sitting on the left. Both steering wheels would turn together no matter what. We just drove everywhere sitting on the left. I had a big Alsatian at the time, imagine the look on peoples faces when they glanced into the cab saw a steering wheel turning with a dog sat behind it. Classic.

It's not worth having a smart or expensive car - with the ever decreasing standards of driving on roads of UK ( i'm not perfect by any means but many of these drivers should surrender their license)
there are many reasons but please read section 188 of the highway code for the UK - You should apply the same rules to approaching and entering mini-roundabouts as you would normal roundabouts. - It is important to remember that all vehicles must pass round the central markings, unless they are too large to do so.

They're not there to make drivers arbitrarily put in an extra chicane when the junction is clear. As long as that van driver also understands that, and uses the mini roundabouts correctly when they're not on their own, I don't see straightlining when it's very clear as a problem.

Exactly. As long as you drive aware of everything you're doing then this shouldn't make any difference to anyone. I think driving with awareness and pragmatism (maybe even common sense) should be something people learn too, rather than just rigid rules applied to scenarios that may not be appropriate. For example, driving by parked cars & leaving space - I've seen plenty of drivers drive inches from parked vehicles just so they don't cross the centre white lines, even though there is no oncoming traffic and clear visibility for miles. Similarly, the "right of way" warriors who don't read the road & just drive into a situation making it worse, because "HWC says ..." but they often aren't reading the road, are only concerned with being right, and/or are using a biased or incomplete interpretation of the rules.

why would you? the sign I saw said the lane closes in 200 yards. that means the lane is still usable, so why sholdnt you use it? if you were not supposed to use that lane, then the works team would have closed it earlier. everyone going into a single lane early just makes the back of the queue longer. the cammer was trying to do a zipper merge at the merge point, which is exactly what you should be doing at that speed.

"merge in turn" means merge together, alternating in turn with which lane goes next. you cant do that if everyone has already formed a single lane by the 200 yard sign. that just makes the queue longer, as it wastes 200 yards of clear road. if you werent meant to use that road, it would have been coned-off already.

It's called merge in turn and if you aren't aware of it you should probably do a refresher course.
This is the reason I drive a £500 car on my commute to work. I'd have happily trade paint with those cars that don't understand the merge in rule.

When merge in turn is in operation you’re supposed to go right to the end in two lanes and merge one for one at the end.
