    When Barbra opens her mouth and after the first 4 or 5 notes , every other performer who has sung these numbers fade into a fog...she owns Dolly.

  • @cliff9685
    @cliff9685 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Barbra may have been too young to play Dolly, but NO ONE has ever song those songs better! Her comedic timing was great in that movie and she sang the hell out of that score! Like buttah!

    • @johnpickford4222
      @johnpickford4222 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ANYONE in their mid-twenties is going to sing the score well, but it’s not a vocally demanding role. SHE WAS TOO YOUNG AND IT WAS THE PRODUCER’S FAULT TO OFFER IT TO HER (for $600,000) AND HERS FOR ACCEPTING IT. A $28,800,000 FLOP!!

    • @cliff9685
      @cliff9685 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnpickford4222 I thought she was under contract to Fox and she had no choice. She’s mentioned that she knew she was too young go for it and didn’t want to do it.

    If I remember correctly (I was just a kid), this was from the Ed Sullivan Show during Dolly's release. Extraordinary. It's incredible that Streisand is still at the very top of show biz. She is truly unique. In the pantheon of great performers.

    Truly AMAZING!!!! I so hope that someone will release the film of this. I bet watching her perform this, at this young time, when she was not yet so self conscious, but free and holding nothing back in her delivery would be thrilling!! She was so passionate, so intense, unbelievably powerful and sang with such wild abandonment when she was young. Just mad with talent and passion. Truly the GREATEST voice, so free, that I have ever heard. The clarity, the sharp laser like quality she had. So glad that she is still touching lives, but she seems to have become more and more subdued as she's matured, so tamed, like the fire went out of her. So wish she had taken care of that amazing voice. I've often heard her say how she doesn't take care of, doesn't protect, doesn't warm up her voice or doesn't do any vocal exercises. Too bad. I bet if she had taken care of her voice, it would still be quite wonderful even in her later years. But I feel so lucky to be alive during this great talented artists life. Even though her great voice is gone, we're so lucky to have so many recordings to enjoy! Love it!

      Have been lucky enough to see her live 6 times! Sounded great even when she was in her 50s. But the last time,not so much,she was 74. Voice has gotten very hoarse! But for her age,certain songs sounded fine.

    I've met Barbra twice and am working soon with one of her all time famous producers and arrangers and pianist and backup vocalists, Bob Esty. Anyway, Barbra always also had a great patter 'live' ; great sense of humor. as well as voice of course.

      I agree, i think that as a Singer or Actress as long as Streisand is breathing shes better than all the rest !
      And the New Album Due Out Nov.2, 2018 & I've listened to a couple clips & 1 whole song "Don't Lie To Me" & their Awesome ! Absolutely some of her best Studio work in several years ! As she has kept her political views! But she hasn't spoke this strongly against the Powers That Be since the 1970's ! If you Love Streisand & aren't happy with the current administration You'll Love the New CD/LP ! Please give the New Cd a listen you'll love it .....! I Do !

    Why should an artist "retire" if they have something to offer and some people still enjoy their work? Every artist passes through a time when they produce more and greater work, but that doesn't mean that they should just hang it up after that period is over! Who is the judge of when that period is? What is it the blue period in picasso's life? I'm sure some would say that after that, it was all downhill for him. Others would say that was just the beginning. No one is forcing you to listen.

    The video was on here but has been taken off - I wonder why??!! I don't know why they don't release Streisand's concert at The International Hotel in Vegas, filmed in July 1969. Its where she has the big, elaborate hair! Unmissable.

    The truly great performers are as good (or better) in live performance as in the recording studio. This is proof-positive! Too bad that for decades, Barbra eschewed performing in front of audiences. This was her last REAL concert gig for many, many years.

    It is so fuckin amazing how she sounds live. She simply just as well could have preformed live in all her musicals. Although i think the Hello Dolly song in the movie with Lewis Armstrong was filmed live.

    Would have loved to have seen this, I loved the movie! However I find it hilarious that she makes fun of herself, at 4:20 she says..."She was hung up on Mae West see, the night before I filmed this scene I just saw My Little Chickadee and it stuck with me"....lol...so true through the entire movie I thought...thats okay I believe Mae West played Hello Dolly off Broadway for a while.

    @joedennison Well hello she is quite a bit older, but she is the only(what is she now 69?) woman of her age who can belt at all. You cant compare something she did in her 20's to now. Can we compare what you did in grade school to what you are doing now?
    I agree with the cranky bit though, I remember a recording with Judy Garland talking about how it gets draining when people constantly expect you to perform and for get that you are, simply human. Maybe shes just tired, which is understabdabl

    If we come to that, it's a generally acknowledged consensus amongst connoisseur and art historians that the latter-day Picasso is only a pale fasimile of his just reaching international fame years, always considered to be his greatest period. Whereas printers sing with their brush, colors and canvas, singers can only rely on their vocal chords. And when the vocal instrument is gone, it's gone for good. No one, not even God, can restore it . And nothing, certainly not a #1 spot can either.

    Great artists, in whatever field, should know when to call it a day. No matter how much renown they continue to enjoy during their lifetime. Guess that could be called artistic euthanasia. Wagner, Tolstoy, Lloyd Wright and John Houston, to name just a few examples, hang up their craft long before they departed, knowing very well they could no longer create the masterpieces that they once used to. They retired out of dignity, the same attribute that enabled them to produce their works of art.

  • @mikesterSTLMO

    Very cool to pay homage to all the other "Dollys"; Babs is a good egg. Interesting that afrer all these years, she's gone on the record saying that in retrospect, she was not right for the part. I agree; Dolly was always my least favorite Streisand vehicle.

  • @mannail888
    @mannail888 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is one attribute that towers every human being in their journey in this world, and that is dignity, particularly for people who throw themselves into the public arena. Not that every lay man does not have to conduct its life with dignity, but a sizeable population of the human race are unable to do so, the reasons are manifold. But it could easily be boiled down to three vein: poverty, old age and illness. Thus there is euthanasia. No, mannail888 doesn't in any way endorse mercy killing.

  • @mannail888
    @mannail888 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    As much as I hate to put forth this fact, Barbra Streisand should put an end to the singing part of her career. Her voice has been in rapid decline for the last decade, and, as her recent album, Love is the answer, and the tie-in Vanguard promotional gig show , her vocal instrument is now just a batch of scrap and shred. Part of art of living is knowing when to let go. It's one thing that Streisand always preach throughout the years but somehow never practice.

    • @operadoc
      @operadoc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      While it's true that her voice isn't nearly what it used to be, she still can tell a story with a song on a way nobody else can. That still happens with her current voice as well. If it bothers you, don't listen but others can still get pleasure from her.
