I live in East Tennessee. We just had a warm spell and I got out on tractor I cleaned up around the horses. Don’t have any cattle right now. Just sold all of mine a few months ago

Grew up in farm country. The smell of cows never bothered me. When I smell it now it kinda makes me nostalgic. Smells like fresh air.

I had a knock at the front door the other day ,when I opened it, a guy from New York City told me I had a cow down in the field making a lot of noise. We hoped into the Gator and rode down to see what was happening. Well the cow was calving so we got out and i started pulling the calf to help the process. When i was done, the guy was scratching his head trying to figure out what was going on. I walked over to him and asked, "You have any questions?". He asked," just how fast was that calf running before it rear ended that cow?"
I see the Steers liked their new straw and hay, they were jumping around.

Great Video. Spent time on a farm with my Grandfather back in the 70s.
You know, I watch "Cole the Corn Star" and i was also watching "The Ranch" on Netflix while being on quarantine, happy that you have a similar video for ranching. I realized i have no idea where my delicious steaks come from, and i want to see what the intricacies are of ranching. There were details in "the ranch" that i was not aware of (disease, genetics, etc) that are super interesting. My ancestors were farmers but i'm a city boy, maybe its in my blood hehe. Keep itup!
I know what you mean about taking advantage of the weather. The temps went up here last week and I figured it was a great time to change the oil in my car and clean the chicken coop. Sure beats doing it when it's 10 degrees out. It's funny watching the cows jump around on the new straw. LOL! Kinda like kids jumping on the beds.

Dear Mike and Erin: I got to you from Blake’s channel, and from TTWT to his. You are both kind and courageous, and we think what you do IS glamorous! Driving between Iowa and Illinois as we often do, given where we’ve lived, and with an angus operation formerly in one part of the family and hogs in another part, we got to laughing during a recent trip about the wine connoisseurs in our family, and realized as we were getting a whiff of a farm we were passing on the Interstate and accurately guessing what kind of operation we were smelling in the dark that we seem to be manure connoisseurs! We’re still laughing about it realizing that we look at this as normal: We’re proud of where we come from, and feel very blessed to have rural backgrounds and to share that with family and friends. You both exemplify that and with each video you get better at conveying it, and more confident at what you are doing. It’s fun to watch, and my goodness, what a legacy you are giving your children! The ranch will always be in their souls, just as the smell of Spring always puts me right back into the garden with my Dad and my Grandpa who now hasn’t been around for almost 39 years. Your children will have that cycle of the seasons and wonderful memories ingrained in them that will never grow old. You are honorable people for keeping that big promise, and it must give you immense joy and fulfillment in your hard work. You should be proud, because your viewers are proud of you as true stewards of the pioneering American spirit!

Good evening Mike. Watching this video brings me back to an identical issue we had here. Road kill, yup, something we all deal with in our great country of ours. Like you I was borrowing a neighbors back hoe to dig a hole. Last December we had enough of that. Tax laws had changed, we had a need and the cash available for a new machine. We purchased a new 2018 Massey Ferguson GC1720. The backhoe on it is small, but it does dig a good 6 foot trench and the road kill falls right in. That little tractor has a lot of work in it. The 3 point can even handle 1200 pounds. The loader will do right at 1100, but ours is dropped down to about 900 because we purchased the skid steer quick attach system. Which has a lot of benefits == pallet forks, bale fork, even a skid steer brush hog. The tractor is small and gets into some tight places. Its a real miser on deisel also. I seem to use it quite a bit these days over some other tractors we have. Just a little thought if your looking to add to your machine inventory. I do enjoy your videos. As for me, the best smell in the world is the combination of cow, horse (yes manure lol), leather, saddle soap, hay & alfalfa.
Around here you know when people are fertilizing their lawns & gardens lol.
Those are the day's I breath deep & the memories flood in.
Too bad it only comes once a year.
Manure, LOL. I clean barn every day and keep things raked up as the lease is for sale and never know when someone will come through to look. It also helps keep my ewes cleaner. Something I don't mind and as I'm the one that does laundry and my boots, well... Keep doing the great job and encouraging us all!

As Grandpa Basil would say, smells like money! This is an interesting channel to watch. Thanks to those who are ranchers as it is not for the faint of heart. I've never known a cattle rancher that understood the meaning of down time. Always listing off the next project, what other ranchers needed, and just roaming the fields to check the cattle.

Cattle manure never bothered me. The benefits of the compost and clean barnyards - not to mention I loved seeing the steers run around and tear up the clean bedding - great vid Mike
Don't you just love that fragrance of manure piling up, used to deal with it when I was working in the feed yards as pinrider in the back of the pins that was terrible smell with the little crust of Frozen manure then your horse steps on it and about knock you out of your saddle cuz it stunk so bad. But it comes with the territory it is what it is.

a stray dog is a dead dog mike. one of my father in law's neighbors has a sign that says that. i get a chuckle out of it every time i see it.
Everytime someone in these subdivisions loses a dog, I always get the call pleading not to shoot their dog. Its been a long time since I've had to but I would hope they learn to keep their dogs in, there are lots of smells coming from around here that dogs find irresistable. Thanks John - Mike

Depends on how you look at it and want to accomplish. Housing developments, if the area gets popular. Could turn into a significant increase in property value.
My project list never gets done and I do not live on the ranch at this time, but my project list just getting bigger. I couldn't imagine a larger operation going through a project list such as yours.
Its probably not much different than yours, stuff you need to get done soon, stuff that can wait but still needs done and alot of motivation needed. Thanks for watching - Mike
Great videos I find myself watching them for hrs. I worked on a large dairy in high school and have a lot of great memories of that. I now run my own business and my wife and I are looking hard for more land to raise cattle. We currently only have 8 fat cattle but enjoy every minute of it. I’d love to come see your ranch and told my wife I would spend a week vacation hanging and helping y’all. I know it’s a lot of hard work and sometimes headache and pain but to be able to show and tell everyone what you own, run and do is absolutely awesome! I wish the best to luck to you and your family and if you want Ohio boy to come give free hand let me know!! Awesome videos and love all extra info.

The Project List seems to be the most appropriate video to post the following suggestion.
I noted the extra effort involved in loading and unloading the cattle cake feeder on the Gator, and thought. 'Why not put the cake distributor on a two-wheel tow behind cart, so you can quickly use and park it when finished?' That would free up your Gator for more convenience.

Most of this can be done with oxen, believe it or not, less fuel and more maneuverability.
You could use all the dead deer and all the farm dead to grow trout.
Dig a trout race and put a box over it where it is easy to fill and empty .
Put the dead creatures in it and allow maggots to reduce it.
As the maggots mature after 5 days they move out and drop into the water to be super trout food.
Clean out the bones and antlers periodically.
How much does fresh trout sell at in the area?
How much for smoked trout?

Mike I really appreciate your video's, some of my fondest memories was a good work day dealing with livestock. Even with the thawed manure you still didn't have to deal with any filthy flies, eh?

Suggestion for you Mike........use the manure to help grow your hat faster. Make the manure like a soup and spread it out. It really help the process. We do this here in B.C Canada

Hey Mike, Have you ever had a water hydrant freeze and the propane torch will not do the job. The handle will open but no water will come out. keep the videos coming.

My guess would be a broken rod that connects the to the bottom of the hydrant, might have to replace the whole thing. You could try unscrewing the head, turn off the water first and check the rod. Thanks for watching - Mike

We border the highway and the HWY department never leaves deads for more than 2days. One year we had an acreage owner kept bring dogs and turning them lose at the farm. Every time you asked she didn't know the dog but after you took care of it then she would call, I lost calves, cows and lots of abortions so I shot 9 dogs that year and she called the cops on me and it was her that got in trouble. Cow manure is fine I live a mile down wind of a pig farm and he spreads manure everyday the wind blows, you can taste it in the air.
Wow, we have been pretty fortunate. Most of the time when someone close to us loses a dog they call me first and I give them a chance to find it. I've caught a few that were out running around and got them to animal control. It just amazes me that people that live right next to a ranch are amazed when their dogs escape, all the smells are irresistible to a dog. Thanks - Mike
AndersonCattleCo. My friends parents have a farm and there neighbors just let there dogs loose and let them go wherever they want. The dog’s kept coming to my friends farm so my friends Dad threatened to shoot the dogs and of course the neighbor called the police. The neighbor got in trouble but it still seems like it would be so flipping annoying.
When a friends neighbors call asking about a lost dog he pulls out a bucket of collars and asks if one was theirs. No more dogs run loose after that.
Where I grew up in western NY, we had problems with packs of dogs going after the winter born calves. I finally got calving moved to a better time of year and moved the cattle much closer to the house during that time. Mike talks about cleaning barn, I had to clean that barn every spring if the cows were going to have living calves. Pitchfork and lots of barrels that got taken once a week. No front end loader for me, but at least had calves to sell in the fall.! ) And yes, have had to replace poultry due to dog kills. More than a few times.

If the deer is fresh killed, why not take it back home and process it? Seems like those cold temps preserve it long enough before the predators get to it.

I often wonder what the large tan building is in the background? I noticed Blake has one in the background at his place too?
Mine is a 100 foot long by 40 foot wide cow shed, its open on one side so the cows can go in for shelter. Its their main shelter during winter and the beginning of calving. I think the one that you see at Blakes is a machine shed. Thanks - Mike

With all the driving around on various pieces of equipment you do all day, do you make Erin do the driving when y'all have to go to town? I drive a lot and am grateful that my wife does most of the driving when we do things together.

I follow another rancher/farmer in Alberta, Canada who only uses round bales for hay and straw. He uses a machine that shreds and blows straw into his calving sheds and then shreds what seems to be an acre of bedding for the cattle. Why are you doing it by hand? He does this multiple times during the winter but has to use heavy equipment to clean up in the spring. Usually a D8 or a D10. Ck him out. Northern Farmer on youtube. I would also suggest onelonlyfarmer for you to check out. He is a hay farmer in New Jersey that grows hay for Mushroom Barns.
We do it by hand because we dont have a bale buster. Thank you very much - Mike

Could you write a 3 liner how much real ranchers are on the ranch and what other types of ranching (People with much money who buy a ranch for recreation and who have not to live from?)

Evana and I each hit a deer in a matter of one week. Like you’re place they are constantly getting hit out by our place. A few of the surrounding counties have a program that if you hit a deer or wild hog, you can call them and they will pick it up within about 30 minutes and take it to a butcher and feed families going through hard times. It’s the only good thing that comes from hitting an animal. Great video Mike!!
Thanks Ryan, that sounds like a nice program, if you need it you can get it. I do wish that someone would come pick ours up, even just to get rid of them. My neighbor is always picking them up too. Another interesting thing that happens around here and probably everywhere is that if a buck gets hit, people will stop and cut off his horns. Two of them I picked up today had their horns cut off. Odd. - Mike

I truly enjoy these videos I am an engineer by trade but I’ve farmed all of my life I do it for the lifestyle/hobby and extra income my wife and I are raising our young children on a farm which is very important to us I think residing children 0n a farm builds character and teaches res-etc for the land the animals and other people

I take care of horse farms in Michigan and my friends farm has 15 hens the eggs were yummy, the day after I was done they had a neighbors pit bull invade their property and it massacred all 15 of their hens, so sad( they had motion cameras so they caught it all on video)

I feel your pain. "Progress" is headed our way and the coyotes and feral pigs are running us over. You mentioned that the antelope are your biggest problems with fence, here it's feral pig. My God, those things are like little tanks, if they can't eat it, they destroy it! This past week 2 coyotes and 1 sow pig have seen the business end of my AR -- and that's with a 40 hour + week job. My wife said we are under siege, I'm thinking she is right. Oh well, I'm never bored, all ways plenty to do, and as long as the 223 ammo holds out I'll have job security! God bless you and your family. BTW, my favorite movie is Monte Walsh with Tom Seleck, ya might give it a watch! It's about the "Last Cowboy", I didn't really understand until I saw it 2 or 3 times. :-)
