MTD/Cub Cadet bagger review on XT1 tractor

  • Newest addition to my Cub Cadet is a bagger. I grew tired of mulching lines due to the amount of rain the last couple years and not being able to cut as often.
    This video discusses the pros and cons I found so far of bagging in general and this specific unit

    One thing I do when we get a bunch of rain is mow my yard, then let the grass dry for a few hours. Dry grass shrinks some and is lighter an my tube doesn't clog up as easily. Nice review though!

    Great video, getting a similar setup soon. To save some time while cutting, your back yard is perfect for cutting like a Zamboni resurfaces an ice rink, cut the yard in half and just do a big oval. Then you can cut down on stopping and backing up to do the next row, time savings.

    • @PMPerformance

      I used to do that, just the cut marks were weird. I like the straight cut lines.

    that was a good informative video. I got the same cub cadet. being nit picky the ONLY thing I dont like about it its loud. 2yrs later im used to it. If I get the bagger I now know what route to go. yard looks good. SALUTE!

      Thanks for the kind words. I am glad to hear you are happy with your Cub! I thought they were all loud, so I did not give it a second thought. I wear earbuds now when I mow to pass the time and drown out the sound. Only real issue I have with mine is the PTO lever flips back sometimes on its own and I need to re engage the blades sometimes. Otherwise this thing trucks pretty good to my abuse.

    Great Accessory!!! I use the bagger late in the year to clean up mulched leaves (Upper Midwest). That flexible hose is great but if it gets cold enough, it will stiffen like a board and I suspect it could split in the seams if then mishandled. I used to store it in my shed but decided it was safer to store the hose in a heated garage while I am still mowing. Now I just leave it in the garage for the winter since I do not know whether cold storage is good for it. Probably expensive to buy a replacement. Yep, the bagger is easy to set up as well allowing the user the choice of whether to bag or not. BTW, that "Glass" viewing window on the top is as worthless as the gas tank indicator on the side body (At least for my eyes). You can also buy armrests and bumper for this unit!!

    • @PMPerformance
      @PMPerformance  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @robbarrios7229
      @robbarrios7229 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Theyralltakenfu I did shortly after this and so it’s been >1 full season with it. The heat I think caused the adhesive to fail on the gaskets that help seal the lid. So those have peeled off. I was going to try to re-glue those this winter. I don’t really notice a difference unless I’m going in reverse. Then I notice the leakage past the lid. The lid is as flimsy as advertised. I am very gentle with it and never let it hang all the way open because I feel like it’s not strong enough to support itself by the hinge especially in the summer when the hard plastic gets softer. All in all it’s served it’s purpose and there’s no alternative so what else are you gonna do? If you want to bag, you have to buy it. So all you can do is take care of it as best you can.

    • @Theyralltakenfu
      @Theyralltakenfu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robbarrios7229 I think heat resistant glue would def take care of the gasket, may even double the gasket if that helps. You can buy something on Amazon, I have it round my door, works great.

    I have been bagging for several years. I have found these hints work best. Tall grass cut at high level and then lower the deck to your normal height. If it isn't too tall you may cut at your normal level if you go very slow. Never ever cut wet grass and keep the underside of your deck clean

    Have the same Cub Cadet, but use the Cub Cadet bagger. I think it’s easier to use - no washer or nut to worry about misplacing/losing. Gravity holds it down just fine. Ducting is smooth/hard, so grass just shoots right through; no venting to have dust grass/blow through. Only problem is that the grass flows so well through the ducting that the left-hand bag usually gets packed full while the right-hand bag is less than half-full. I can live with it; works well in every other respect.

    Thank you for the great video. I've been thinking about buying that bagger for my XT1. Don't need it much, just mainly for fall cleanups.
    Just a hint: You probably should put the regular hi-lift blades on the mower for bagging, you'll find you won't have as many clogs using the hi-lift blades, the mulching blades don't have the lift capacity that is needed for a bagger.
    Do you have a lot of blow out around the front right side of the mower deck on your machine? I experience this issue a lot, and its worse in the mulching mode....sadly these decks don't have a baffle system for mulching so there seems to be an excessive amount of clippings that get blown out the front of the deck.

    • @PMPerformance
      @PMPerformance  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      William Sevier I may try the hi lift blades again.
      These do pretty good for bagging, but yea mulching these aren’t spectacular anymore. Lots of blowing out the front.
      This doesn’t clog. Only clog I had was with wet grass and not dumping it soon enough. I haven’t had a clog since this video.

    While you say it makes it easier for you to get the tractor through your gate, I can't help but feel that the corrugated flexible pipe is contributing to your clogging problems, as well as cutting down on the velocity of the clippings which will cause them to not shoot over into the farther bag. I'm glad you consider it an advantage, but I think in reality it is just an attempt by the manufacturer to cut costs at the expense of better function.

    • @PMPerformance
      @PMPerformance  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mark Dickson it does not clog unless I run the bags too full or the grass is wet. Neither of which have to do the the corrugated tubing imho. I’ve run this thing for quite a few months now and these are the only 2 scenarios it has ever caused a problem.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bagging velocity issue is due to him running mulching blades. They don't have near the lift capacity to blow the clippings out from under the deck that a set of hi-lift blades do....when bagging you want and need hi-lift blades to get those clippings up that chute into the bags.

    A little hint, you'll get better performance with high lift blades. Those gator blades are great for mulching but not to great for bagging systems because they don't provide the lift needed to shoot the grass into the waste bags. They will work just not as well as high lift blades and cause you to burn more fuel and deal with more clogging

    • @PMPerformance

      I don’t have a single bit of clogging and minimal shooting out.

      @@PMPerformance I agree 100% I had gator blades on a few mowers, I can't justify the few dollars more, when normal mulching blades in my opinion work better. Maybe if someone is mowing at .02 mph there might be a difference giving the gator blades time to chew up the clippings.
