This song was hard a s***! Not because it was technically hard but because the 16th notes on the hats... or fills... or snare rolls are going 100% throughout the song! My arms were on FIYA! Especially after spending a few hours to get this take.
Clive Burr is a maniac in this track and Nicko is too for having been able to play it as well!!

It looks like Clive is playing 2 toms in the beginning portion.
So my apologies to the hardcore Maiden Fans!
I saw them Live in Toronto last summer, it was absolutely amazing!
Now if I could only remember if they played this song hahahaha!

I don’t know if you still read these comments, but I came here just to see if I could figure out Clive’s setup. Which is dumb because I realized it’s going to vary from drummer to drummer. 😁 (Which I figured out during the chorus with the crash cymbal.)

Clive’s set up was very similar to Nickos. However some differences. He used 3 rack toms and I think 2 floor toms. I’ve seen a few pictures where there’s a small rack Tom above the first one (to make 4). I hope that made sense!
Anyways, I hope that helped!
Tiring song, I know! What helps is loosening the hi hat during the Gallup beat, so you can save your energy for the tom fills, then the build up section before the ending. Stil is right, just don't have to be as technical playing the hi hat. Just a tip, cause you did a great job!

I had to keep up to some Marshall Half stacks while in a band 😂
But in that set up I had 2 overhead mics on each side of the kit. More or less pointed right at the cymbals (if I remember right)

I'd say since September/Oct 2020 I've had a mic Under the hats. I'll have to try on top, but from this recording I thought "nah i dont need a top"
It makes a little bit of difference though!
Snare bottom mics are also cool to get in the mix too!

My Bad man, Im just diving through comments to see if I missed any and came across this!
Yeah, I have found that with side chain editing, you can do some fun stuff with the Bass drum if you only have 1 mic (inside). Like bussing it to a separate track, or just duplicating that track and bringing out the lows a bit more to mimic the outside mic. Then adjusting the volumes so they blend decently!
If your interface has an ADAT (I think that's what its called) you can add a second one and daisy chain it on fairly easy. Currently, that's what I'm doing to get 16 channels available. It's certainly worth it for large drum kits!
