- Thomas The Tank Engine The Great Quarry Climb Thomas & Friends Take N Play Set. Based on the quarry as seen in the film Blue Mountain Mystery, this is one amazing Thomas & Friends toy. Owen is there doing some mighty incline work and the downhill ramps are heaps of fun. The turntable has some awkward track connections and could have been better designed. Trigger the rock saw and load up the wagon to keep Thomas really busy or the Fat Controller will send Thomas to the smelter yards.
It's a fantastic play set for some Hot Wheels action via Scooby Doo Mystery Machine and Angry Birds and the Chuggers love a ride here as well. Take away one piece and there is a epic crash zone. We all love a bit of bash and crash.
This play set is so much better than the Thomas Shark Exhibit set which has some major problems going on and limited play-ability.
If this Great Quarry Climb play set came with Luke, or a combination of Thomas and a Narrow Gauge engine I would class it as a must have play set. Imagine if Luke was included and how that would be a instant winner when it was opened at home. We can only dream of such fantastic ideas, maybe one day the toy giants will think of the big picture and how one little change can reap huge benefits.

Yes, he's had it for a while and he loves it. Especially the Owen incline engine. I showed him how to smash and crash his toys on the downhill ramps so he's really happy now. He's had plenty of Hot Wheels on the set as well.

I totally agree, I think the killer combo of Thomas and Luke would have worked to make this set one of the best ever. That way you get the two key characters in Blue Mountain Mystery in one HiT.
If Thomas was a special one with surprise face or dirt covered well that would be good as well but now I am dreaming, can't hope for too much these days.

Yes, basically I'm far better off just uploading the intro only and bin the review part, then I could be assured of a fantastic viewer retention data, as it stands in the way I uploaded this video it's a fail.
One little change by adding Luke would make this set a mega-star toy, but for some reason the toy companies like to sell the play sets short. I still see on sale the Totally Tidmouth massive play set and it's a fine example of bigger is better. It's still $150 so that's great value where I live.
We can only dream of what should be, If only I had a chance to sort out the Thomas toys I can assure you things would change.

The really nice toys tend to make nice intro's, it was a struggle with the Shark Attack set because it had such limited playability

I see other producers putting in masses of ad's mid video and at the end of videos on longer videos, this seems to give them an advantage because this place sold out a long time ago. I would hate to think I need to have my videos divided up with ad's so I survive on this network. If I keep falling I will have to do this to survive.
I have trouble finding these sets, where I live there is very little stock in the shops. Sadly I also notice Chuggington has been pulled out of the shops. My local Target, Kmart and Myer no longer stock Chuggington.
I'm a Thomas collector so every Thomas is gold for me..LOL, but imagine this set with Thomas and Luke...it would be a spectacular small change which would turn this play set into the must have item for children.
If only the toy companies could think of the BIG picture for once, that's all I ask.

Another problem with a non-direct route across turntable is that even with a small engine like Thomas, you could fit AT MOST two trucks on the turntable, meaning that if you wanted a longer train, you would not make Henry take a heavy goods train from the blue mountain quarry

Interesting video Leo! This set certainly looks much better than that terrible shark set! I like that this set actually includes several railway related thing such as the incline and the turntable instead of a massive shark head...... This set seems to have much more potential for repeated play as well, lots of different ways a child could play with this set.

This is an excellent play set, if only it came with Luke and was a true all in one take n play... then I would class it as one of the best.
It makes the Shark Attack play set look like chicken feed
My son played with this set for a solid week before he was tired of it, he played with the Shark Exhibit for a few hours and was bored with it. I have argued with a few people about that Shark Exhibit play set, I say it's a total dog and stand by that, for me that $50 could have been spent on something else i'm sure.

Most people would have the standard track pieces, Flexi-track is a bit of a luxury item and sure I love it. If only the turntable was slightly different, When you buy this set you will see exactly what I mean.
Don't get me wrong, this is one of the best Take N Play play sets to grab.
great review Leo....very unique to have story telling in the preview to highlight parts of the toy as the child might imagine it.

The story telling part in these videos is actually killing my channel, Basically my videos have very poor viewer retention figures,lower than 10% This is now killing my channel because of the changes TH-cam have done to bring the good viewer retention video forward.
My channel had been de-ranked, very few people watch the whole video I'm sad to report
Viewer attention spans on youtube are very short, I would be better off only uploading 60 second videos, long format videos have killed me.

Fantastic video Leo, I definitely agree with you on that turntable problem, the spacing of the five tracks is rather strange, that happens a lot with turntables in the Thomas Franchise. It's odd, that little plastic piece on Owen's winch that connects to Thomas' coupling, with my BMQ set that bit isn't all plastic, it's a small magnetic metal piece that's completely exposed with no plastic around it, I might have an earlier version. Interesting they would change something like that...
In time I will establish if it's better than Rock Quarry Run as my son is a good litmus test for this. It is $20 cheaper than that set ( RQR $100) and $30 more expensive than the Shark Attack set ( $50 )..Oz prices quoted.
RQR has never really been put away, the Shark Exhibit is already half way to the bin. I do see there is a re-release of RQR as a BMM set, I have not seen this set where I live.

Fantastic Review Buddy, and I agree, when will toy designers learn that including a normal thomas in the sets IS NOT the only way to sell a toy. if they gave kids and collectors exclusive engines ( Or trains other than thomas and the other main 7 engines ) in the sets, they may sell more than they realize.
This set is 1000% better than the Shark Attack play set, yet some people want to argue this out with me. Within two Take N Play reviews I have looked at one of the worst sets and one of the best. It's really HiT and miss with toys at the best of times, hopefully I have cleared the good news sales fog that some present on youtube and stick strictly to the facts. I will not do it any other way, that's what the audience really want..the truth.

I have a HUGE problem with the little bits at the start, it's very clear many people only watch the intro and not the full video, this gives the video a very poor viewer attention data and that stuffs the video in time. I'm going to have to really change what I am doing to save my channel which has suffered massive losses in the last few months.
Doing long videos is obviously a epic fail now because of the way youtube de-ranks videos with poor viewer data.
Awesome video! Also, it seems like most of the Thomas & Friends train sets always come with Thomas.
I Wish I have one for Take-N-Play Set when I saw it since when I was 12 years old.
It also helps if your head is wired like a 5 year old..sadly I never grew up...in the end this paid off for me..but boy did I suffer for many years working surrounded by alpha males all trying to outdo each other.
Another great review, It seems that like the shark set, this one comes with another truck that lacks detail, particularly around the buffer beam. I also agree on one of your last statements. Too many sets these days, regardless of whether it's Take-N-Play, Trackmaster, Wooden Railway, etc., have Thomas in the set especially as a fickle collector who doesn't like having duplicates in his collection.

If I can find it where I live...The big problem I have is play set availability. The supply of toys in Oz can be very low and totally lacking variety.

Thomas and Luke weighed too much to ride the incline and then the incline broke so it would be cool to weigh yourself before you ride but I hate weighing myself to have fun because the unlucky time was when I weighed too much to ride the cheetah chase

You made some interesting points, I liked seeing the crashes instead of all being prevented by that weird blue plastic divider part, and I do like that you modified your turntable. It shouldn't turn and click into every single track. I would have liked the set better if certain details were painted up, like Owen's detailing, but otherwise it looks like a very fun playset, full of action and hidey-holes for Luke...!

If TH-cam keeps de-ranking my videos... I will have to split the reviews into the intro and body of review. Sadly TH-cam have decided viewer retention is king now, if you have people click away mid video or only watch the start of a video you stuffed. Right now my channel is in nose dive because of the way my videos have shocking low viewer attention data, doing longer videos was a epic fail on my part i'm sad to report. The bulk of the viewers don't last it out.

Really enjoyed this review. I like your intros, you get some really nice shots in coupled with a bit of comedy! :) It was good to see all the different things you can do with this set. If the turntable was the way you suggested, yes it would be better, but it would just be a crossroad then. :P I agree with you on the Shark set.
I don't know about you Leo, but that Thomas just doesn't look like Thomas, his face just doesn't look right to me! For one thing his mouth is grey!

Well the set does seem to be more enjoyable than the Shark one.
Would indeed be a nice change if they used a different engine besides Thomas. I know he is the main (as well as popular) character, but it would make the set more interest in buying with a different engine or at least making the Thomas unique to the set (like a different face or paint job)

I have a few things to say about them too.
for example, they lack Rolling stock.
sometimes they only come with one piece of rolling stock or nothing at all.

I really like Luke. He’s so cute and he’s Irish like me. That’s why I’m sad he’s not in this set because I had this set when I was younger but I never got Luke, so I would have had him if he was in this.
I think the Thomas coming with every set is Mattel's complete lack of faith in any other other character other than Thomas to sell sets. Thomas is fine if he comes with starter sets as starter sets are for people starting out this is not a starter set so yeah other engines should come with this set.
Love that Owen voice... He's such a meh character, wish they could do more with him.

you could make a Thomas the tank series with all these sets you've got
Also- couldn't add it before, but I think perhaps a Narrow-Gauger like Skarloey, Rusty, or Rheneas(given his runaway action scene in the quarry) would have worked better, instead of Thomas. Even the green diesel Paxton would have worked better, seeing as he was the one working at the quarry before Thomas came to help.
If Thomas was still included, perhaps some 'Blue Mountain Stone Dust' flecks could be added, or a new face given. Just something unique to that set..
At the end it could be a great fanfare which Leo it is we always watch the end

You should try to add some landscape whenever you do an interview on a take-n-play Thomas set. It just might grab the viewer's attention a lot more.
