This was such an eye opener! Who would have thought we needed so many muscles to make ONE SOUND much less talk? Her therapist explained and demonstrated with Abbie so simply and clearly it was easy to understand! Like with blowing bubbles-I have COPD and when blowing bubbles we are NOT trying to blow hard making lots of bubbles we need to do a slow steady exhale so it comes out as one giant bubble. i mean, when you think about it, talking is a complicated multi-step process. first you have to learn how to move the muscles in your mouth and throat, then you need to learn the sounds, and then you need to string all of them together and form sentences and words. but most of us learned that process so young it seems simple. from watching the vlogs and watching Abbie learn how to put away groceries i noticed how complicated things like that actually are. all of the matching and differenciating between hot and cold, and memorizing what goes where. Personally, i believe that Abbie still has to form the connection in her brain between the thought of wanting something, and then the process of speaking it out loud. because right now, all she has to do is think of what she wants, remember the sign, and then move her hand. or she has to think of what she wants, get her ipad, and find the symbol. but to talk? she'd have to think of what she wants, get her muscles to move in a way that makes the letter sounds, and control the air flow in order to communicate. it's a lot of stuff to remember and do. i think you guys are a wonderful family and I really appreciate all of you. your vlogs and channel are amazing and you all are amazing people.
Abbie has come a long way. I am happy she understands that when she does want something, she needs to communicate it somehow, whether it be sign or iPad. That is a huge step and needed to happen before adding speech into the mix as that is the hardest for her to master. I like her speech therapist. She knows what she is doing and actually cares about her students too.
Yes! You don't even realise how complicated those "everyday" skills like verbal communication, walking etc are until you have to teach or re-teach someone those skills. E.g. Abbie trying to learn the right mouth and breathing techniques to form sounds, physical rehabilitation walking after a leg/spinal injury, like how do you even teach language to a deaf kid when hearing kids pick it up innately from listening to us babbling on? I guess the teams that work with special needs clients and early childhood would know how important - and often complex - things like speech, fine motor skills, feeding etc are, and how people outside of those worlds might take those skills for granted.
@@ceekay3143 Most deaf people are not 100% deaf. They have some hearing that helps when trying to teach speech. They learn sounds and put them together for words. You hold their hand up to your face and let them feel the air with certain sounds. You put their hand on your throat so they can feel sounds that use the voice. The speech teachers do a lot with deaf kids.
The connection between the thought of wanting something and then communicating it is the same no matter if Abbie chooses to sign, use the iPad, or to speak. The muscle movements eventually become automatic.
It's very interesting to see how for "regular" people most of these things develop naturally, but for people on the spectrum, it is just another thing they have to work on additionally in order to be comfortable or at least that will make their everyday life easier.

Hi, fellow speech path grad student here. Our professor's strongly discourage therapy involving non-speech oral motor movements as a therapy to improve speech because there is NO evidence to support here. Please do your research into different therapies once you become a clinician. Sometimes clinics and employers will ask us to do therapies will ZERO scientific evidence to support it. Here are 2 papers supplied by my professor showing why these therapies are ineffective: Lee, AS-Y. & Gibbon F.E. (2015). Non-speech oral motor treatment for children with developmental speech sound disorders. Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 3, CD009383. McCauley, R., Strand, E., Lof, G.L., Schooling, T., & Frymark, T. (2009). Evidence-based systematic review: Effects of non-speech oral motor exercises on speech. American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. 18, 343-360.
@A N For speech pathologists the goal is to give our clients their best shot at success, and that is MOST likely to happen for therapies that have been proven effective. There are many other therapy techniques to try and get Abby to produce speech. Therapies which have children practice speech sounds themselves have been proven more effective than practicing non-speech movements.
@A N & savstrange & sarah Jones CAN YOU PLEASE GET THE HECK OUT OF HERE WITH THAT MESS! Let a parent try & dream of possibilities. This could possibly be the breakthrough the world has been waiting for! No matter what from this families 1st vlogs until now Abbster has progressed so much it's amazing to see. She may not speak but she understands MORE than before & for her to be able to say "yes or no" whichever way she can is PROGRESS! So, AGAIN, PLEASE TAKE THAT TO YOUR PROFESSOR SARAH JONES & THE REST OF YOU!!!
I am obviously not Abby's clinician, nor have I done a comprehensive assessment on her so I do not have all the pieces to tell you a specific therapy which would be best in her case because it varies for each person and their specific speech and language challenges. But it is always best practice to choose therapy approaches with at least some statistical evidence.
new found respect for speech therapists. they go into people's mouths, have to endure colds or viruses, bitten fingers, possible gagging. i had no idea what these people did until now!

I am from Victoria in Australia and recently our government has made a stream of Autism awareness "advertisements" and it is sparking conversations for many people here and its so fantastic! My son absolutely adores watching all of you & has since he was about a year old. He’s now three & today for the first time EVER he started copying Abbie. I felt a small urge to stop him but then stopped myself & asked him, “Buddy, what are you doing?”. He said, “I’m making happy noises! Abbie happy mama. Lyric happy too!!” 😭 I hope he never sees people differently. He loves everyone SO much!

Thank you for sharing Abbie with us! She is doing so well. My ASD kiddo is verbal so we don't have the same struggle, however being able to watch you guys helps me feel like I'm not alone.
That is amazing stuff right there. What a genius Mrs. Jill. She has great repore and control over abbeys attention. She was really paying attention to her so well. I think she understands and is trying to talk there.
I’m SO GLAD you did this video! I never understood why Abbie would get the bread stuck on the roof of her mouth. I just took your word for it because you and Priscilla know what works for her. It’s amazing how much goes into working those muscles in her mouth and she cooperates AND LOVES her therapist! I’m just amazed....now back to the video
Does Abbey get really tired after speech therapy, our daughters used to get really cranky after therapy our oldest always had to have a sleep. I had a magical moment when watching this and a tear or two,(it was the recognition of hands) that moment when you are doing the therapy thing, and you realize that you are not the only family doing therapy with your children. your not alone. Your so proud of how hard your kids are working you want to share it with others but the other doesn't always get the miracle that that moment was. Thank you.

Her SLP did an amazing job in this video and the other (I just watched) explaining and demonstrating why horn therapy, other oral motor tools, and PROMPT can be excellent ways to develop motor skills in the mouth; the finest of all motor movements! The routine and sensory component are also beneficial and are clearly evident with your Abigail. Thank you for sharing! -A fellow SLP
This is incredible!!! I am a Speech Language Pathology student and it really cements my passion seeing Abbie achieve goals! I'd love to see more videos like this and maybe even more explanation from Jill about what she's doing, keep it up :)

This video is fascinating. My experience with speech therapists as a special education teacher has been with students who are verbal. Our therapist works with them on stringing more words together to create longer and more complex phrases and sentences, eye contact, social cues, starting and maintaining conversations and things like that. This is a whole different side of speech therapy I have never seen before. It makes a lot of sense. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. Thank Ms. Jill as well for being willing to let you film and share this. And great job working so hard Abbie!
Almost 10 years ago I was diagnosed with mild aspergers. I can still talk normally and it may not seem like I even have aspergers. But when it comes to thoughts or feelings I don't like. I can relate a lot to Abbie and the way she communiticates. She has such an amazing personality. It's very inspiring. Thank you for your videos.
My daughter is Asperger's, I wish we would have gotten the help for her. She is a functioning Asperger's, but is still so limited. She lives on her own, but it's still very dependent on me. Y'all make ASD look so simple. Lol I know it isn't! You have such an amazing tribe! I really enjoy watching y'all.
I am literally crying. I never understood nonverbal folks until this video. When Ms Jill said “If it were easy you would do it!” After Abby shook her head a bit- the realization that she thinks and functions COMPLETELY different than I do and it’s a bit complex for me at this point set in. I’m trying to learn by watching your beautiful family and how everything works, routines and everything. This video was so enlightening, thank you!
I only have very short periods of time when I lose the ability to talk. But obviously my body has the required strength and movement there for me so I can’t communicate fully once it passes. I can’t imagine how exhausting and frustrating it must be to have to work so hard for such slow progress while watching most of the world do it with ease! She’s so incredibly patient. I’d love to know what everything she thinks during the session
The therapists and doctors and helpers that you have in your lives are just incredible people! I adore this channel, I adore your family! And I’m learning so much!!
Miss Jill is so calming.. you can tell she absolutely cares about Abbie. Hearing her make that “M” sound loud and clear was amazing. Thank you for opening up about this part of her life 💚💙

Thank you for showing us an in depth therapy session! I am a second year Speech-Language Pathology graduate student and this is so very helpful. Yes, these practices may not be completely evidence based, but they also show that different techniques work for different individuals. Others can think what they want, but watching how Abbie's communication has evolved over the years is, in my opinion, absolutely amazing!! Love you guys!! Please keep posting therapy videos!
I had the biggest smile on my face when I heard Abbie copy the "m" sound 😁 it's very interesting seeing what goes on in speech therapy because those of us that have no difficulties with it, we don't have to think about and plan how to make certain sounds cause it's just an easy thing. To see the amount of brain power and muscles that go into just making a simple "E" sound or as the therapist said getting food out your mouth is really amazing and I'm so glad that we have people like this in the world who specialize in it and can help. Abbie is doing amazing, I've been following for a year now and she has accomplished so much in that short time, her stim sounds are constantly different, her vocal communication is more clear and she's just grown into a very happy teen. I'm so thankful that we get to witness her develop these skills and watch the family grow, you've already taught me so much and not all of it is even about autism. Such a beautiful family and I'm excited to see what the future brings for you all 😁
My Grandson has Autism he's 7 and he doesn't talk much he does say the odd word but I think Abby is great your videos have helped me to help my grandson Thank you.
That quote at the end you said about verbal communication being an action rather than vocalized really gave me a sense of relief helping a young boy I work with. Thank you
Thanks for bringing us along and showing us what Ms Jill and Abbie do during these sessions. Some of these things I’ve never thought about in the way the mouth moves in certain circumstances. You’re a great teacher Abbie...you’re doing fantastic!!
Very, very interesting. Abbie seems like she wants to learn, and follows the prompts she’s given. I think is going to surprise everyone. SHOW THEM WHAT YOU GOT ABBIE ❤️❤️😘
This was so awesome to watch, thank you for sharing! I am a middle school SPED TA and this was really interesting to watch, it showed me what my students go through and opened my eyes to the hard work they put in just like Abbie. She is doing amazing!
Very interesting. Even though Abbie doesn’t talk and she has her way of communicating, we have learned it by you sharing and I feel we know what she’s saying and how she feels about different things. So educational. Thank you. Knowledge Is Power♥️
This was very insightful and informational. I love when you guys post videos like this where we can get educated and possibly pass this on to someone else who might need it
What a great speech therapist you have! When I was learning to make clearer sounds as a kid I remember it being a nightmare and belittlement, and I’d come back to class and be teased. .
That chair actually exist in just about every single home in Norway. They make it over here, it's called Stokke Tripptrapp and grows with the child from they learn to sit until they are able to sit comfortably in an full size chair. They are amazing!
They are extremely popular in Germany too! Usually they are just called "Tripptrapp" :-) They are adjustable from a baby's first feeding chair to a young teenager (if you like), with very simple changes! And they are very safe from tipping over, durable & easy to clean! :-D

So awesome! I remember these days with my boys when they were younger. I'm amazed how Abbie is still able to grasp new skills at her age. We were constantly told we had a small window of time to get my boys verbal and functioning at a higher level. True to a point but obviously not seeing Miss Abbie. Keep up the great work guys!!

Once she does something and gets a reward for it that really gets her motivated to do it more because she knows she’ll get more of the treat. It’s so cute because that’s what any kid or even adult would do too. ❤️

I got this herbal supplement from Dr Oyalo channel and used it on my son for 4week and within the period of using it there was positive changes which really urge me to continue and I can say my son is free from autism now.
As a speech path grad student, this is very interesting to me because I haven't had exposure to therapy for nonverbal kids!
Here are 2 papers supplied by my professor showing why these therapies are ineffective:
Lee, AS-Y. & Gibbon F.E. (2015). Non-speech oral motor treatment for children with developmental speech sound disorders. Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 3, CD009383.
McCauley, R., Strand, E., Lof, G.L., Schooling, T., & Frymark, T. (2009). Evidence-based systematic review: Effects of non-speech oral motor exercises on speech. American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. 18, 343-360.
Agreed with the poster above. These are NSOMEs, and they have no research base :(
@A N For speech pathologists the goal is to give our clients their best shot at success, and that is MOST likely to happen for therapies that have been proven effective.

The concentration in this vlog was amazing, Abbie nailed it and you see she really wanted to try and wanted to achieve. She's brilliant and an inspiration to those of us who give up too easily. Love you Abbie ❤️💜❤️💜

I am normally a silent observer I have been watching for almost year! I am from Victoria in Australia and recently our government has made a stream of Autism awareness "advertisements" and it is sparking conversations for many people here and its so fantastic! I have used it to be able to educate my family and work mates and talk about your family. Just wanted to share this little bit of positivity :)

This Vlog made me tear up. I have watched so many of your vlogs and this is the first time I saw Abbie so relaxed and connected. She really likes and trusts that therapist. And the sound she made when she was working on her lips. Loved it!

Thank you for sharing..brought tears to my eyes.. she does really well in her sessions.. you so deserve the best dad award..
Abbie may never talk, BUT she is always communicating

Thank you for sharing Abbie with us! She is doing so well. My ASD kiddo is verbal so we don't have the same struggle, however being able to watch you guys helps me feel like I'm not alone.
Hard work and dedication. "It doesnt gets easier, it gets better" You go Abigail🖤
I wish my son had this much sophisticated knowlageble therapists ! Wishing all the best wishes and goodlucks to sweet Abbie !
Abby is amazing. She has matured so much and she knows the therapist is trying to help her! Keep working Abby
1. We love ya!
Thank you.
Thank you Miss Jill for allowing us to see what you do!

As an SLP in my clinical fellowship that works with children and young adults on the spectrum, thank you so much for sharing this!
Thank you for opening up about this part of her life 💚💙
im so proud of abbie and the work shes putting into trying to speak! you can see she gets frustrated but she doesnt give up! ofc with the help of family and doctors. but you can see shes trying hard! she came a long way. what an amazing girl

This lady is amazing at her job and working with Abbie!! Beautiful ❤️
I really want to thank you so much for this video! I never realized how much goes into someone just saying mmm you can see how much Abbie is really trying. I always wondered how come Abbie isn’t able to move her mouth and hands the way we can and the way you explained it was really well!

Thank you for sharing the amazing process of Abbie in therapy. It was absolutely fascinating, touching and just beautiful watching this beautiful soul. You are truly blessed and the smile she gave you just fills my heart! With all the negativity in todays world, Abigail Maas is a shining light of pure love, joy and candy 🥰🥰

Thank you for allowing us to watch Abbie working so hard.. Jill is a wonderful teacher for Abbie.
That was fantastic she did great you guys are fantastic parents with everthing you do for your kids.
I'm so thankful to be able to watch something great right now 😢 I'm in the ICU with my 5 year old right now... so ty for sharing great content 💛
This family hires the Best team of therapists for Abbie. Love to see more speech therapy and Abbie's progress
Very interesting. Even though Abbie doesn’t talk and she has her way of communicating, we have learned it by you sharing and I feel we know what she’s saying and how she feels about different things. So educational. Thank you. Knowledge Is Power♥️
Abbie totally knew she nailed the mmm sound. Warmed my heart. She had a giant smile right after she did it!
That speech therapist was awesome! She really made Abbie focus to the task on hand. I hope you continue the speech therapy!
This was very insightful and informational. I love when you guys post videos like this where we can get educated and possibly pass this on to someone else who might need it
What a great speech therapist you have! When I was learning to make clearer sounds as a kid I remember it being a nightmare and belittlement, and I’d come back to class and be teased. .
My son worked with a wonderful speech pathologist for his stutter, we also got outside help, as well! Both women were amazing ❤️❤️
That chair actually exist in just about every single home in Norway. They make it over here, it's called Stokke Tripptrapp and grows with the child from they learn to sit until they are able to sit comfortably in an full size chair. They are amazing!
When he mentioned the chair I was currently on one of them. I never gave it up even though it doesn't fit me well anymore.
They are extremely popular in Germany too! Usually they are just called "Tripptrapp" :-) They are adjustable from a baby's first feeding chair to a young teenager (if you like), with very simple changes! And they are very safe from tipping over, durable & easy to clean! :-D
@@bellisperennis42 Actually, you can now get an attachment so that you can use it even for a newborn. And yes, they are awesome, we still have one!
Same here in Denmark, we have one too!
Yup, we use them in the Netherlands to. You can buy all kind of extensions to use it from born to like 10 years old.
Im in the NSU grad program for Speech Language Pathology. And this was so amazing to watch something I am learning so much about and applied to a child like Abby 🤟🏻

Wow. 👍👍👍Thats really impressive! I think Abbie will totally master this, & hopefully learn at least the bare minimum to communicate with. Her patience was on point too.Practice, practice, practice Abbie! U go girl.👌👌👌
Ms. Jill sparked my heart, she did an amazing job with Abbie. I haven't been following your families blog for very long but I am so thankful I found y'all. ♥️ I like M&Ms but would have asked for Smarties anyway like Abbie!!! She gets me.

As an SLP, this speech therapist is amazing and has such a good way of explaining whats she's doing.
Loved this video, it's making me understand so much more about speech but also Abby's language and communication. Thank you!
Once she does something and gets a reward for it that really gets her motivated to do it more because she knows she’ll get more of the treat. It’s so cute because that’s what any kid or even adult would do too. ❤️
Great job Abbie!!! So proud of you girl!!!! Love it!!!!! She is doing awesome as usual!!!
I never realized how much speech therapy covers. Thank you so much for sharing!! This was extremely eye opening.
