    I don't understand all the hate for the owner as a way to justify a few dislikes. The dude's clearly not american and compared to Matt who is grinning from ear to ear like an excited kid (which isn't a bad thing, its lovely to see people excited over a Caterham) he's simply less animated, thats no reason to insult the dude. I think he bounced off Matt's questions well and baring in mind everything Matt is saying is basically preaching to the choir as the guy knows exactly how his car is and has probably heard it all before from everyone he's ever taken for a passenger ride in it.
    Chill a bit guys :)

      Salvare000 agree, but you must have some crazy ability to tell if someone has citizenship. All I noticed is that English wasn't his first language :)

      He mentioned he lived in europe. I'm from the UK myself so when I watch this video the contrast in personalities between someone from the states and someone from europe is quite clear, Matt is very animated and has alot to say whereas this guy is a little bit quiet in comparison but thats not to say that either one is a bad thing. Theres alot of value in what they both bring to the discussion :)

      Salvare000 It's hard to understand how viewers can express anything but thanks for the owners. These guys are awesome for sharing their rides with all of us.

    I think anyone that has a problem with this guy hasn't been exposed to many personalities. Everyone is different, he was perfectly fine. I don't know what you expect out of people.

    For people hating on this guy. English obviously isn't his first language, so he took Matt's self-depreciation joke quite literally, and just added a fact. No need for premature judgement, y'all aren't perfect either. He wasn't trying to rub in any bitterness. Also, I'm assuming (?) he's of European origin, so he probably didn't quite figure out Matt's tone yet. However, he obviously didn't have much to say in terms of conversation I'll give you that (maybe he just wanted Matt to be comfortable talking about the car), but no need to hate on the dude. Matt any insight? Since you were literally with him.

    Matt looks and sounds like he was really having fun. There were some corners that looked like they were going wayy too fast. That they didn't crash, or have a tank slapper, is a testament to the tires and basic goodness.
    This was the most visceral depiction of speed I have seen on these videos. Definitely made my morning.

    To me that the very essence of driving. Extremely light weight, and not spoiled by shit like turbos that take away from feel and instant reaction. ..it does take a skilled driver though. ..and a decent climate. Still fun to me that the UK is the main provider of such cars, considering the horrible weather we have in this part of the world.
    Cool car, cool video Matt.

    • @891trigfoot
      @891trigfoot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JohnnyNr5 i would rather have 300 hp and have to wait 2 sec for it to kick in then have 180 hp and good throttle response cause the 300 hp turbo will be smoking your 180 everytime while u sit 20 cars back praising your throttle response lol plus this isnt the 80's there is something called anti lag now lol

    • @funkingitup1805
      @funkingitup1805 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +JohnnyNr5 Modern turbos with variable geometry have virtually zero lag, and when a turbo is mounted to an engine that had good response without a turbo, the turbo does nothing to ruin the "reaction". You are living in the past.

    • @jo05dk
      @jo05dk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't know if i'm extra sensitive having grown up with carbureted cars and bikes, or you just don't know any better, but man do we disagree on that.
      I like turbo engines for a daily, but for fun i need the direct connection. If you are unable to feel the difference you're the lucky one. It does seem to be what the industry is going for. Still i feel better off for knowing what the real deal feels like.

    • @tonspike
      @tonspike 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've driven modern McLarens, a 911TT, GT-Rs, you name it. Yes, there is a difference in the way that they feel compared to N/A cars. I've driven cheap N/A cars to R8 V10s, and they are always more responsive in throttle application.

    • @tonspike
      @tonspike 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The essence of driving enjoyment is not just about the sensation of speed. It's about steering feel, the information you get through the suspension, the way the car sounds and looks. Sorry, but not every drive is a race to be #1.

    • @bingoberra18
      @bingoberra18 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      maybe because the caterham does not offer weather protection, heat, soundinsulation, an exotic engine, electrical gadgets and high end brand.
      A caterham doesn´t really compete with a 488. If its a track car you want, buy a trackcar and a trailer. For most people a sensible sportscar is better even if it does not provide the same pure sensation.

  • @bbpleg
    @bbpleg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    If you want to drive on a track and learn how to drive well, then this is car is perfect. With a decent amount of power, they're faster than most high perfomance cars and all the credit goes to the driver. My only concern is the lack of safety and crumple zones... I was scared to death as a passenger in the UK haha

    • @bbpleg
      @bbpleg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wake so you would recommend a car which hides your mistakes? Perhaps a nice nanny like esp system? The caterham is basically a go cart. It's very predictable, cheap to run, small wheels and therefore cheap tires, you can fix anything on it yourself, lightweight therefore easy on the brakes and transmission, uses ford engine therefore cheap to fix... the list goes on and on.

    • @C42ST3N
      @C42ST3N 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wake has never driven a caterham. It is a analog car and i mean a REAL analog car. It is not hard to drive or punish you if you are not doing something really stupid. The cars loses nearly no value, can handle the track abuse with no problems at all and is really cheap to maintain. Other cars need a lot of modification to handle track abuse and you have to pay a lot of money which you will never get back. You can get a academy for around 10k track ready and run it for years.

    Matt. There's rarely any wind noise picked up whenever you have a roof or, windows down and we get to hear the engines better. I don't know if it's your microphone which is really good at that or if it is where you place it but, you should stop worrying about this issue. I suggest that you try a couple of videos with the windows or roof down and up and check them out yourself.

      @Ted7 Hey bud, sorry, didn't want to seem harsh. I get it - being on camera is unnerving to people who are not used to it. Not everyone can be a TH-cam star. You just unfortunately reminded me of some of the Ferrari guys I would see at Italian car meets...you know the type.
      Love your little toy, seems like a riot...and there is no doubt by you having that car: you are a true driving enthusiast. No other reason to own that car. Kudos.

    Saw a car like this on a meet once. The guy had ordered the car like a kit he could build himself. He had a tuned 2 litre Cosworth engine in it. Was even more stripped than this one. Just bare minimum to be legal. It weighed only 500kg and had around 300hp. Man, did that thing move!

      How is it so hard to believe? These cars are 550kg stock. The most popular engine to have in these are the 2.0 ford ecotek 170hp from a Mondeo. The Cosworth is the same size and fits easily. A stock Cosworth with a remap is 270hp-ish. Here is a link to where you can buy the car in parts and build it yourself: uk.caterhamcars.com/cars/self-assembly
      Troll somewhere else please.

      Canyons are patrolled by highway patrol. They are all about making revenue and like Matt said what's easier than sitting on the side of 405 or 5 freeway to hand out tickets. However GMR and mulholland have a heavy CHP presence because those spots blew up and attracted all the douche bag drivers and bikers. Lucky Angeles crest, La tuna, and similar ones around Malibu are safe....for now with little to no presence

    Worth noting that the 360 isn't the actual HP per tonne, just the HP per tonne if that car weighted 500kg (most of them weight close enough to it anyways, but they're still usually on the 520-580 range).
    Based on the owner's weight estimate this one has some 317 crank HP/Tonne, still much more than plenty, and as far as marketing gimmicks, a rather innocuous one.

    The closest thing to a race car experience in a production road car, Colin Chapman the founder of Lotus designed it that way.Early ones were a hotchpotch of mechanical parts taken from volume mass produced cars. Power to weight ratio was his mantra and his first venture into formula race cars had a coventry climax forklift engine in it.
