For you non-brazillians, the music in the background is "Preciso Me Encontrar", by one of the greatest samba artists of all-time: Cartola. It's a masterpiece that helps making this beautiful scene as fantastic as it is.

I watched this movie when it came out on video in Canada 20 years ago. I knew immediately after watching it I had just seen a masterpiece. What a film!
What really blew my mind about this movie was just how quickly and unceremoniously main characters just… died. They didn’t have any serious theatrics or dramatic last fight, they just flat out get clapped. I mean, even Rocket’s brother’s death was mad underwhelming. I thought he was gonna be a bigger player in the story 😂 Fantastic film all around.

That’s exactly how it is, we don’t know which of us will survive even when we are good or bad. I lost 80% of my friends. I am one of the few that survived.
This song "Preciso me Encontrar" (Need to find my self) was sung by Cartola, but written by Candeia. Candeia was a police officer, shot in the spine, left him in a wheelchair. Perhaps the lyrics "Deixe me ir, preciso andar. Vou por aí a procurar, rir pra não chorar" (let me go I need to walk, go around to find the left so I don't cry) was a reference to their condition.
I remember watching it like it was yesterday when I was 14... Pretty much every day after coming home from school, I'd put the DVD in and watch it completely.... Probably a hunded times. This movie and "8 Mile" are directly linked to that vulnerable teenage time when I was going from child to young man.
Idk about anyone else but I find her really beautiful. Her skin is radiant. The actress Roberta Rodrígues still looks great to this day. Something about Afro Latinas is highly alluring to me

This story in the book is even more brutal. IIRC he doesn't bury his wife alive, but instead tortures her with the shovel head and then he takes their infant baby and butchers it with a meat clever, dissecting both bodies and burying them in the floor. When I read that in the book, it put a pit in my stomach.
What I love about this movie is all the little details. Like Shaggy was the coolest, but wanted out of the hood and the crime life. His little brother Benny also became the coolest hood and also wanted to leave the gang life. Both brothers wanted to leave for a girl, move to a farm and smoke pot..
