Shouldn't the goverment (or rather, the taxpayers) be the one that supports these people until they're able to get back in their feet? Seems like it would be a simple step to link certain, pre-existing services together rather than force people to pay for a person that likely left them and took their kids too.
Why is it the governments job to do that? They were married and usually despite your comment otherwise a husband was able to go earn a good wage and progress in his career as the wife was home for years with her career going down the pan doing all of the childcare and housework. Hence why she probably ended up leaving! So yes the husband absolutely has an obligation to make sure his former spouse and children are provided for not the government or other tax payers.

Not only that, plenty of women are choosing either to have fewer children or none at all. Basically, women aren't helpless victims that need to be rescued. Women are the ones that, overwhelmingly, push for marriage and the ones that, overwhelmingly, file for divorce. Men need to stop being punished for the whims of the opposite sex. If women truly are equal to men, then they should be able to stand on their own two feet after a divorce. As for my previous comment, if these women find that they need monetary aide or a place to stay (until they get back on their feet), then the government should be the one to provide for these women. In my opinion, that's literally the point of a government -- pooling resources to help those most in need.
