  • In early March we looked at a Ukrainian conversion kit which turned GP-25 under-barrel grenade launchers into standalone weapons. Since then further research has discovered a very similar conversion design originating from Russia. The Север 1 developed by a company called RGL.

Thanks for the video, I didn't knew that one. I guess, that the Idea itself came from the not often seen russian RGM-40 "Kastet" (Brass nuckle) launcher from 1997, which is, more or less, a stand alone version of the GP-30 issued to the interior ministry of the Russian Federation. I've no idea, why their army, or someone elses army havn't had issued it, since the GP30 puts addidional 1.3 kg (unloaded) to an already front heavy rifles front.
A couple of years ago, there was a video around from russian seperatist, who had a homemade stock for a GP, which looked like a wooden board, cut to dimensions in a carpenders shop. Simple, but it adressed the weight issue of the underbarrel mount.

no it fired 3 rounds of a 33mm lesslethal round

@@manchagojohnsonmanchago6367 Do you confuse the RGM-40 with the GM94 three round pump action launcher? The Kastet throws regular Vog25 Grenades (and some others) like the GP25 and GP-30 UBLs

@@muellermartin9661 oh yes i stsnd corrected! You are right the RGM-40 is a stand alone 40m- vog grenade shooter made since the 90s.. Sorry i was thinking of the rgs-33 33mm lesslethal launcher for a moment, my apologies.

@@muellermartin9661 thanks, yeah the 1980s soviets and 90s russians went mad with grenade launchers, ive actuially handled the gm-94 and seen it fired in the caucasus in about 2005 they had some of the earlier preproduction models at the military base in kizlya - they had about 8 or 9 of launchers some very worn, the quality was much higher on the old prototypes than on the mass produced ones with many sharp edges and stampingd ect, i remeber theu had a purpleish bluing on the parts.. All from milled steal and machined parts was far smoother action. . It is an interesting weapon, strange feeling to use, there was a 12 gauge shotgun with the same mechanism .. I asked one of the guys who was familiar with the 43mm thermobaric ammo (its all plastic on the case) i asked him why they had chose to make a new unique round. He said in the 1990s woth urban combat appearing in insurgencies and antitorror situations they 40mm had an issue that you couldnt fire It point blank.. It had a lpng standoff range.. So there was expriemental vog 40mm rounds that detonated at close range.. 4 meter standoff ect.. As thermobaric rounds made in the 80s and early 90s.. Apparently according to this guy.. But the issue was they were caseless and the powderchamber was nomally always metal and it was directly pointing back at you and whe iy exploded it would propel the metal fragments back onto the shooter so making a closecombad vog 40mm was just not an option.. He said there was expriemebtation further back in the 80s to try to make some sort of round like the americans behive rounds for the caseless 40mm ammo but it went nowhere. . (just like the behive 40mm american shotgun ammo) sp he reckoned KBP made a completely new round just so they cpuld have urban combat ammo.. I feel like they should have persisted woth the 40mm vog im sure a solution where the propellant change housing stays in the launcer and drops out after firing.. Would have meant every 40mm launcher could fire close range ammo.. Thermobaric ect rounds. Interesting weapon but seems needless. In footake pf the war in ukraine i can see many cases when a thermobaric close range round would have proven decisive
