Thanks for making this video!!... it would be great to know if its possible to connect Ableton from another computer to TD via OSC or any other method? I havent found anything out there that touches on this clearly, and I havent had success yet on my experiments.
Yup, you can definitely do that since OSC is a network protocol. This link is a high level overview: docs.derivative.ca/TDAbleton#Set_up_TouchDesigner_and_Confirm_the_Connection
The main thing is to get the IP address of the Ableton computer and enter that on the TDAbleton computer's setup. Have you done something like that before?
Thanks for your support@@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ !!.. when I tried I was trying to connect a Mac (Ableton) to PC (TD) and despite adding the IP address in TD it was not detecting the OSC signal... I'll try PC to PC when I get a chance and see if that is actually the problem.
@@metanoic.vision No problem! If you're having issues, try temporarily disabling firewalls on both computers to see if it works. If it does, then re-enable your firewall and you might need to add rules to it to open up the ports you're using for OSC.
do i need ableton live suite or does this work for live standard? i'm getting an error "This device is not available in this version of Live" when asked to create a song in the preferences/control-surface addition step.
You should be able to use Live Standard, as the requirements on the TDAbleton wiki page don't mention needing Suite, but you'll need Max for Live. Do you have Live Standard 9+ and Max for Live 7+?

@@musicshy6432 It could be. I believe most of the trials are actually trials of Suite, which comes with Max for live included, so maybe that's what you experienced.

Of probably 5 I found…this is the only one that went beyond the setup and into automating something. I’m an ableton veteran and a TD newbie, so If you ever have time to do a deeper dive with some of your creativity you apply in other TD vids, that would be awesome.
Beats, Tempo and Volume were cool. Another specific example would be applying Ableton automation (envelopes, etc) to control a parameter(s) to TD visualizer controls . With this you could apply existing ableton automation to existing TD parameters, saving creation of these controls in TD, and just let it rip. Another example would be Ableton envelope followers controlling TD parameters. Advantage of doing this from ableton is you can really split hairs on EQ, etc and manipulate the envelope follower (I’ve seen some of this in TD, but fir me anyway, way more intuitive in Ableton).

hi, first of all, thanks for the tutorial! however i'm having trouble connecting the two. i have td master turn on in ableton, but touch designer pop up says "no ableton live connection". when i check the preference in ableton there's no pop window for create td song... all the midi ports are same. how could be a possible solution to this?
Hi Tracey. First question would be if you've gone through all of the setup instructions like installing the TDAbleton scripts into Ableton's installation, and setting TDAbleton as a control surface in Ableton's settings? As well, something that is always good to try is to temporarily turn off the firewall in your operating system and restart Ableton and TouchDesigner to see if maybe the issue is that they're getting blocked by the firewall. Let me know about those and I can offer more suggestions.
@@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ restarting my laptop did the trick! still trying to wrap my head around it and based on the forum posts i read the ports might be unstable or closed unproperly. anyhow thank you for the tips! it worked :)
@theinteractive&immersiveHQ in the utility tab of my tdAbleton op, I only have a purple "Custom" in the ableton live install field. I am attempting to connect a pc with TD to a mac with ableton. do I need to install ableton on this PC?
It is possible to have Ableton running on a separate machine communicating with tdAbleton (since it uses OSC and is network capable), but you'll have to set it (Ableton) up manually following these instructions: docs.derivative.ca/index.php?title=TDAbleton&oldid=17862#Getting_Started
4:06 Hey, thank you for this wonderful tutorial! when i click create for the TD song while assigning touchdesigner in my midi control surface, max for live doesn't appear and the TD song doesn't create to any of my channels. would you have any solutions to this problem ? thank you!

A couple things to check:
• Do you have Ableton Live Suite? This requires Max for Live access, meaning it won't work with the Standard or Intro versions.
• Have you installed the remote scripts? It sounds like you have, but double check that you've installed them for the right version of Ableton.
• Which version of Ableton are you using? When Ableton Live 11 was released, TDAbleton was updated to include two versions, one for Live 9 & 10, and one for Live 11 (both are accessible via the palette). Make sure that you're using the correct version for your version of Live.
• Make sure the Ableton Port parameter on the TDA_Master device on Live's master track matches the Ableton Port parameter on the tdAbleton component in TouchDesigner.

8:01 What if don't have so much parameters acivated in abletonSong1 node? They don't react to what timeline, tempo and samples in Ableton project. But tdAbletonPackage in TouchDesigner are connected to Ableton
First thing to check: the abletonSong COMP has a setting called _Include Time/Cue-Point Data_ that allows this data to be included in the output or not. Double check that you've got that switch turned *on* , otherwise you won't see any of the bars/beats/etc. information coming in. Hope that helps!
when I dragged tdAbletonPackage, I don’t have "utilities" as a parameter... maybe because I’m using the trial version of ableton?
It shouldn't have anything to do with Ableton. Which version of TouchDesigner are you using? I just double checked in the latest stable and when I drag and drop it into TouchDesigner I see Utilities and TDAbleton as custom parameter pages.

Is any video about how to connect Ableton and TD in different laptops?
We don't currently have one, but I have sent the topic over to the team for consideration as a future video! Since TDAbleton uses OSC, it is fully network capable (meaning you can run TD on one machine and Ableton on another). The setup should be mostly the same, except that you'll have to decide how you want to install the TDAbleton package on the computer that is running Ableton.
You can either:
a) download TouchDesigner to this second machine and follow the usual installation instructions (docs.derivative.ca/TDAbleton#Getting_Started)
or b) use the old manual installation method (docs.derivative.ca/index.php?title=TDAbleton&oldid=17862#Getting_Started) .
Either method will work. If you're running Windows on either machine and are still having connection issues, try disabling Windows Firewall -- it commonly causes issues sending/receiving OSC messages.

Anyone else experiencing this? On Macbook Pro late 2011 16g, When i press the pulse button and then confirm, touchdesigner seems to freeze so i have to force quit the application. When i look into the remote script folder of ableton, the folder touchdesigner is there and a .txt document that seems to be the script for touchdesigner to work. But when i open ableton and go to the surfaces i dont find it.
Hi there! Have you confirmed the version numbers of Ableton Live and TouchDesigner to make sure they match the minimum required versions? You can confirm here: docs.derivative.ca/TDAbleton#System_Requirements

I have Abelton 12 Suite and have followed all the instructions on connecting them on the same computer. I have updated Abelton preferences and selected TD and none and TD confirms connection, but Max never initializes nor does TDsong appear on my master track? Any advice on what I might be missing or doing incorrectly? Thank you!!
i did exactly what you did in the tutorial. i checked my ports, and the wiki , i cant find anything or any answer why i dont see the beats in the ableton song COMP , anyone has the same problem?
A couple of things to check:
1. Are you running Ableton Live 9 or 10? There's a separate version of TDAbleton for Live 9 & 10 in recent versions of TouchDesigner. If you're running Ableton 11, use that version instead. You'll see these listed under the TDAbleton category in the Palette.
2. Have you installed the TDAbleton components for Ableton via the tdAbletonPackage COMP? If you have multiple versions of Ableton, have you installed them to the correct Ableton version?
3. In Ableton, have you set TouchDesigner as a Control Surface in Preferences?
4. In Ableton, have you added the TDA_Master.amxd file to the Main track?
5. If yes to all of the above, does the tdAbletonPackage COMP in TouchDesigner show that it's connected?
Have you used this with Ableton 11 yet, I am not able to set Touch Designer as a control surface in Ableton 11 but it shows up if I use 10. Any help would be great.
Have you tried going through the installation steps on the wiki? There's one step where you have to target which specific Ableton installation you want TouchDesigner to install it's TDAbleton scripts to. Does Ableton 11 show up on the dropdown list there?
@@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ Yes I have Live 11 Suite chosen on the drop down, I see the touchdesigner folder but for some reason there is no touchdesigner drop down on the ableton side when I go to set it as a control surface

@@BenJohnsonTheMarine Sorry to hear you're having trouble with it. One thing I'd suggest is updating your build of TouchDesigner and trying again. As well I think you should manually delete the TouchDesigner MIDI scripts and preferences from the Ableton installation, and then try the manual installation instructions at the link below. im having a problem, my ableton does connect with touchdesigner. but as soon as i follow your steps and paste a "abletonSong" it doesn't connect... it syncs the tempo but it doesnt count the beats or other stuff :( how can i fix this? im using ableton 11 and the newest version of touchdesigner!
These days, there two versions of TDAbleton are included with TD: one for Ableton Live 11+ and another for Ableton Live 9/10. The first thing that I'd check is that you've grabbed the tdAbletonPackage COMP from the Live 11+ folder or you might run into issues. Another thing you can try is dragging in the abletonSong COMP from the Live 11+ folder in the Palette instead of copying it from the tdAbletonPackage COMP. Start there and let us know how you get on :)
how can i send the audio back in to TD to record it as part of my recording process or just use OBS lol
An option here is to use something like VB-Cable (vb-audio.com/Cable/index.htm) to route the audio into TD using the Audio Device In CHOP
