I just want you to know how much I enjoy your flower and Dahlia videos. I am 76 and have been gardening almost my whole life. I just discovered Dahlias a few years ago. I am in total love with them. Your videos encourage me to grow more. I worked as a Flower designer most of my life and enjoyed it but now being retired I am out in my garden every day. I really admire young flower gardeners as yourself. You bring new ideas to gardening. Keep up your beautiful work and videos❤
Oh Susan, thank you so much!! I truly believe flowers saved me. I was having such a hard time after changing my career path after I graduated college and needed something to help me decompress from the craziness around my work/life schedule. I always loved flowers, but when we finally bought our home 4 years ago and I got to have my first and very own garden... there was no turning back. I love that you are here, and I know you probably have so much wisdom to share, please always chime in with any feedback. Flower arranging is my biggest passion and is something I am trying to better at every year, I'm sure you created beautiful pieces. 💞
Gorgeous garden! I had the same issue with my roses this year. So many new issues this year with the garden. I guess it has been too wet the last two winters and not cold enough. Wow! Your flowers! 🌸 stunning.
Right!! Melba our rather has been so wonky, I feel like our flowers are so confused lol. Luckily nothing has gotten out of control, I’m just trying to stay on top of it. 😆
Can’t wait for the dahlia tour! I’ve just got the bug this year. I live on a Mediterranean island and unfortunately don’t have access to specific tubers but I can get good quality seed varieties sent to me so I am starting from seed and will save tubers (hopefully!) of the ones I like. It’s so exciting waiting for new buds to open to see what they are. I will definitely be watching more of you channel. 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
Aww thanks Sarah!!! Gosh when you get the dahlia bug, you can’t stop lol! I’m fascinated by where you live, what zone are you in, and what is the climate like? Growing dahlias from seed is so much because you never know what you’re to get. There’s a lot of great seed sellers, I would look into Floret too, her dahlias seeds are amazing! 🥰
@@InTheGardenWithClaudia I am equivalent to zone 10a. I haven’t been able to cut any dahlia yet to bring indoors as they are opening too much too quickly but I believe it’s because it has been in the very high 90s for a while? I also heard that the flowers may get a bit bigger as the plant matures, have you noticed this? I still have much to learn! But I love it 🌸 There are still 12 dahlia that are yet to show me who they are 😍 I’ll definitely be watching your tour and dreaming of my dahlia future lol
Oh, I see, they can get a little bit bigger, but if you have a ball variety that only gets to about 4 inches across it’s typically not gonna get bigger than that unless you disbud the side buds to encourage that center flower to grow to its full size, there’s always slight variations in size. Also towards the end of the season, dahlias tend to bloom faster because they’re trying to set seed, so essentially the longer they’ve been in the ground the quicker they are going to bloom and blow out faster. Luckily you’re in zone 10, so you get a very long growing season, which I’m totally jealous of. 😆
@@InTheGardenWithClaudia 😆Thanks Claudia, I am starting to really appreciate my long growing season especially as I was a bit slow getting started this year 🤪 Loving your videos 🌼
Aww thanks!! We poured ourselves into this garden and we love it so much. I’m sure you’re going to have an incredible garden filled with flowers!! I am your cheerleader and here to answer as many questions as I can! 💗
Thanks for showing some details on the zinnias, celosia and dahlias. I'm trying to get excited about dahlias but I'm a lazy gardener and the idea of digging up tubers and storing them seems like too much work. This has been my first year growing a cut flower garden in my new quasi-rural property in Sherwood and this has given me some ideas for next year. I want you to come give me some suggestions the next time you visit Al's! 🤣
Aww yes I would totally do that! Im always roaming around Al’s, especially in the winter months. love that you said you’re a lazy gardener, I completely understand that. 😆 So technically in our zone you don’t have to dig up the dahlias. I dig them up because I like to divide them and rotate them. But you can winterize them in the garden in our zone. The biggest threat to us is not cold temperature, but water, because it rains so much here during the winter time we run the risk of them rotting. I’ve left several out in the garden and they did just fine but it’s not always a 100% guarantee. Are your dahlias blooming?
Aww thanks friend!! They are wood, 4x6 boards and the size of the beds are 4x17. We used these large screws at the end to give them a rustic look. I will show you in our next dahlias video. 🥰
Your garden is beautiful, Claudia! What a dream for a sunset stroll down those rows of blooms. So lovely! Precious Metals is my FAVORITE!!! 😍 Your garden lighting is so magical. I need to get some of those!
Aww thanks friend!! We’ve have some amazing times in the cut flower garden this year, it’s the first place I go to every morning. 🥰 I highly recommend the lights! They have been such a game changer for us, especially when we have warm nights and sit outside on the deck, the entire garden just lights up. So the precious metals are truly INCREDIBLE! I’m going to save seeds and see if we get any cool ones next year from their seeds. 🤩
Aww thank you so much, that made my day! I have to say the zinnias really are a show stopper this year, I didn’t even bother with succession planting because they are doing so well. 🥰
This is a great question! I don’t do much, we try not to use too many sprays so I know our flowers may have little bugs at times. If you’re very worried I would harvest your flowers early morning, and let them hydrate in a corner somewhere in your house for a few hours before you arrange them. You can also use neem oil from time to time, but if there is a specific bug you’re dealing with let me know and I can try and help you find a solution. 🥰
This is great Claudia! I am new to your channel and came following Kate & Janey... love your space and look forward to learning from you. Aww don’t give up on them just yet, I am here to give you all the tips and secrets to grow beautiful dahlias! After about 30 days or so I feed them with a good water soluble fertilizer, even something like miracle grow to give them a good boost! Afterwards I use a product called Morbloom and fertilize every few weeks- if it’s really hot I may do a couple times in the time period. There are a couple others I am going to test out and if I get good results I will share more on them. 🥰

I’m so happy you found my channel too, I love seeing new faces who share a love for flowers! 🥰 I’m sorry to hear about the powdery mildew, it has been a big year of it. I used a product by Bonide called Sulfur Plant Fungicide. You can sprinkle it on or mix it with water and spray which is what I did. I found it to be super effective compared to some of the other sprays I tried in the past.

Right! There’s a lot to share in our garden. A few years ago when I really started growing more cut flowers I started dropping off bouquets to nursing homes and giving them out to nurses, family, friends, and our neighbors. Our family own several nursing homes so I just wanted to brighten the residents day. Now we do the same but I’d like to start selling bouquets. Aww thanks Jennifer, you are too kind. I love sharing my flowers with you all. You can start ordering them in the winter time and they sell them based on your zones- meaning you live in a warmer climate so you may order your cutting earlier than me, does that make sense?🥰

Oh that’s the worst, some of mine do that too. In the raised beds I keep them planted pretty tight, around 8 inches apart. I also always cut them to promote bigger and sturdier stems. Are you growing them in raised beds or in the landscape?
That is a great question! They can be harvested when the blooms are the size you want and before the bottom florets start to dry and form seeds, similar to how some of them were in our celosia bed. Celosia has a long harvest window, so there's no need to rush. You can begin harvesting them when the stems are firm and not floppy, the little florets have started to open half way, and before all the florets are open. They have an incredible base life, so again no need to rush to harvest them. 🥰
