    I had the honour of officiating Alan’s graveside service. His life was more than drumming. A great Dad and a devoted husband to Gigi. Rest well my friend, I wish we could have had you here for another few years.

    When Bill Bruford quit Yes, the band knew it would be a real challenge to find a suitable replacement. It's a darn good thing for Yes and their fans that they found Alan White. He has been such a loyal, long-lasting, solid asset for the band ever since. There are so many records where Alan shines. One of my favorites is Drama; some folks think that Drama isn't a proper Yes album, but I absolutely love it. I've seen Yes perform live several times, and I've heard Alan do a great job of playing great bits which were first arranged with Bill -- e.g. "Astral Traveler." Seeing the Union tour was a great thrill for me, and one of the many reasons for this is that I got to see and hear two of my favorite drummers, Bill Bruford and Alan White, perform together.

    Fast single stroke rolls are really the essence of rock an roll drumming.....
    Alan White on Relayer still amazes me. He made extremely difficult material actually swing.
    Not to mention "Sound Chaser" . The first time I heard it on WNEW in New York, I was sure it was Billy Cobham because of the ferocious rolls around the Tom Toms.
    That recording of those Ludwig Drums is still my favorite drum sound...

    • @alanpartridge4681

      I would go as far as saying he was at his best around this time. For me, his drumming was peaking in the late 90s/early 2000s. That was the period where he still played with a lot of fire but also a huge amount of musicality. Pre-1996, his live playing would sometimes be overly thrashy and loud, with the tempos sometimes being too fast. And by 2009 he had lost most of his energy as a drummer. But in between those years is where he was at his best in my opinion.

    • @alanpartridge4681
      @alanpartridge4681 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jeremy Spade For me his playing in that period was a little too over the top. Too much washy crash riding which I feel didn't let Steve's guitar playing breathe as much as Bill's playing did. He sometimes took the songs a little too fast live as well. But by the late 90s I feel like Alan had really learnt how to control that power and got more musical as a result. All just my opinion though.

    Just as other musicians it's sometimes ridiculous to say who's better. All drummers have their own style. I think Brufford was an awesome drummer also. Alan is one of the most under rated drummers in rock history. He's absolutely awesome! Brufford was more of a jazz drummer, White is more of a rock drummer. And progressive rock takes a high amount of a certain talent for drummers. Anyone who says Alan is not talented has no clue.

    That solo is a part of a song called Ritual. And the way he plays is about to simulate something like that. A kind of tribal rhythm section, not focused in the exploration of tricky tecniques. Alan is considered one of the best ensemble drummer of Rock. Its rare see him soloing. And the most of times it happens its because there's a part of a Yessong that demands it.

That is a taste and no one can discuss anyone else favourites musicians. Nobody can explain why I like this or that. Another level is when you say sentences like unmatched by any rock drummer. He was correct in underlyining he WAS.

There are amazing drummers around the world no one knows. Bruford was pretty strong in originality and innovation (especially in king crimson during 80's).
