In Anthony Bourdain's book Kitchen Confidential, he describes the worst kind of restaurant owner. I'll paraphrase. You take some guy who made a bunch of money in another business, like a dentist, for example. And he likes to cook and throws excellent dinner parties. And he has this dream of starting a restaurant. So he rents a space and buys a whole kitchen's worth of fancy equipment, and then he hires a chef, and then that chef staffs the kitchen with all of his friends who couldn't get hired anywhere else. And he starts comping meals for all the big restaurant reviewers and any kind of public figure he can get to come to the place to generate some buzz.
Making money was never the #1 goal, or even the #2 goal. He wants to be be in the paper. He wants to have a little squad of cute waitresses to work his way through. He wants to be well liked by his employees. All of that matters more than the bottom line.
    Well, here we are.

Call me crazy but is it possible WBD may have gotten the Impression that AEW used Punk to ink that deal for Collision and decided we don't want to do business with a company that uses shady practices? Actually WBD might of saw that segment Jungle Boy did on real glass and thought boy these guys are REAL STUPID! Did anyone for even one second stop to think that on it's own was dumb and arrogant? They need to cut 50% of their roster to have a slight chance at profitability in next 2-3 years.
WWE have 224 on-screen talent including wrestlers, announcers, authority figures etc across 7 hours of TV a week (RAW,SD,NXT) - granted most the NXT talent are on less than 100k a year. That’s 32 talent per 1 hour of TV. And WWE makes about $70 million on average per 1 hour of TV! That’s what AEW makes for all their 5 hours of fucking TV combined currently! 70 million…
AEW having 188 talent across 5 hours of TV puts them at 37 talent per 1 hour of TV. So they have more talent per hours of TV than the biggest and most profitable wrestling company in the world. While making significantly less in TV rights.
It is absolutely insane. At the level they’re at, they need to have no more than 50 contracted wrestlers, everyone else used sporadically on a per appearance basis for enhancement matches.

To play devils advocate on this one, the video game was a risk that was understandable. Of the wrestling video games, which are very popular, AEW's was very unique. It hit a different demographic, getting the hardcore indie fans, the regular fans, and the casuals that wanted a quick pick up and play game.

Thing is, WCW’s decisions in 1994-96 made sense in building up the company. The mistake was thinking they would just continue on at that success level for years on end.
Also, keep in mind WCW was a moribund business in 1993-1994 and Bischoff was intelligent enough to cut spending and make a pitch to invest in WCW (by way of the Hogan signing) once costs were cut to a reasonable level.
AEW has just done inadvisable things since Day 1. Carrying nearly 200 wrestlers is ridiculous. And they didn’t start with anything close to that number. Tony has just continued to buy more and more wrestlers without any results on the back-end.
If he cuts even half the roster, he’d lose nothing creatively and probably is near break-even financially. But I’m also guessing dummy Tony signed these guys to guaranteed deals, so he’ll never be able to get out from underneath all these obligations.

What they are too stupid to understand is that they are spending a lot more money so they aren’t making more profits. If they have a bigger roster with bigger contracts, have more shows and a video game then yes they are going to be bringing in more money. They might make $100 million dollars off their video game but guess what? If they spent $100 million then they didn’t make a profit. They are doing more PPVs and shows but they also have to spend more money to have those shows and pay the talent more. Video games are similar to movies where the general rule of thumb is the movie or game needs to make roughly double its production cost to be considered profitable. That is because the production cost usually doesn't account for marketing costs, distribution costs, and other costs that might be tacked on as well. So in the example of the AEW game if it did cost $50 million to make then it needed to make roughly $100 million in sales to be profitable... which apparently it didn't.

I'll always say (or type in this case) that when WWE released that first batch of talent a few years ago and AEW signed up whomever they could was the start of their financial mess ... and they KEEP doing it: WWE releases a mid-card talent, the talent's fanbase explode with OMG TONY SIGN HIM/HER! HE/SHE IS CHAMPION MATERIAL!, and AEW signs the talent to go with the previously-released WWE talent they already signed, let alone their 'home-grown' roster. Not to mention AEW buying up ROH and partnering up with other companies and need to give screen-time in-ring, promos, stories and vignettes to whomever they want to push? No wonder that AEW wants to go a 'work-rate' style because that could take away a lot of head-aches of anything that doesn't happen in-ring.

I'm no tax lawyer, but those wrestlers he paid, he could use as a tax write off and use the losses for several years following (like what Donny did). Plus he probably got government welfare to cover his payroll

Not a good business move. But I can't hate on Tony for that. WWE fired a good chunk of their roster at the height of uncertainty of the pandemic. It was not like they were strapped for cash and had to make these cuts to keep the lights on. They did it to be able to report a higher net profit for the quarter. Tony didn't lay any of his workers off. That's lowkey admirable.

Never underestimate the incompetence of television executives. Fox overpays WWE for the "SmackDown" rights so much, they apparently never made a cent in profit off it and are not going to for the rest of the deal's length. Despite it being the most-watched programme of its kind in the US.
Anyway, once again with feeling: AEW is a hobby, not a business.
Hey Jim, don't mock the $85 million for the roster, you heartless bastard! You can't put a price tag on _friendship._
    Friendship is magic, dontchaknow?

I never understood why Fox paid that much for WWE. From the time they began discussing the deal to when they finally signed, WWE lost almost half their audience.
Murdock must have some real goofballs handling their network.

@@oodatooitis6714I guess WWEs name still brings views, sponsorship and other forms of revenue. It's probably in their eyes we have them no one else and another well known brand on their portfolio.

Hoarding irrelevant talent on the roster unused while said talent collect cheques from home reminds me so much of asset-stripping done by the major topflight football clubs in Britain & Europe. It's such a scam, and starves the business of healthy competition.

It would be great to have em for the 1st podcast of 2024 actually, that way it'd be after the holiday break & there still time left for a lot of stuff to happen at the end of 2023 lol.

According to Steam Charts: at launch (July 2023) there were an average of 227.6 players. In August, that number dropped to 45 players. As of now, they average 16 players, with 8 playing as of this typing. This is only for PC players as those are simple numbers to give. The game was released in 2023, and was (dont quote me on this) released at 60 bucks, the average of most games nowadays. Since we have no idea what console sales are, we can go by steam sales only. If all those players at launch paid 60; the game made 13k at launch. Keep in mind, this is only counting those numbers as PC players. Console players probably have more sales. Not only that, the DLC is costing 30 bucks, but that was released later and could inflate the sales numbers as well. If the game cost 100 million to make, the game is a bomb in terms of finances, regarding PC only.
