Paul Valery, a french poeth who lived threw both world wars said : War is the massacre of people who dont know each other, in profit of people who know each other but dont kill each other.
I am a history teacher in France, every year in the last year of middle school, I show them this video when we talk about the Second World War. The students are always shocked when it shows the Soviet losses; the video is great because it allows us to visualize the scale of the human disaster of this war.
Often a surprise for Muricans, that are pretty much getting told they singlehandedly won the war, is that Russia (SU) defeated Germany. The Western Front was a bit of a side show, even though the Battle of the Bulge was the largest Battle the American Army ever fought. The Western Allies faced less German Units.
"Russia (SU) defeated Germany" Written like that, your comment gives the impression that russia and the Soviet Union were the same thing. It wasn't. The soldiers from the russian soviet republic (not all were ethnic russians) made up around 50% of the Red Army, soldiers from the territory of Ukraine made up 30%. russia didn't defeat Germany, the Soviet Union did. Today's russian propaganda does everything to eclipse other countries participation in the war effort against Germany (especially Ukraine, for obvious reasons), in order to claim for russia (and its current leader) all of the glory and legitimacy of victory against nazism. "The Western Front was a bit of a side show" The importance of the Eastern Front in the final victory against the Axis was indeed somewhat forgotten by the majority of the population in Western Europe (which is regrettable but somewhat understandable, given that the Western countries were liberated by the Anglo-American Allies, who therefore had a greater impact on the collective consciousness of those countries). That said, it is important not to fall into the other extreme and brand the Western Allies as basically useless in the war against Germany (again, a popular narrative in russian propaganda today). Having and losing a lot of men isn't a good measure for determining whether or not you're likely to win a war. Soviet blood probably wouldn't have been enough to win the war by itself without Western industry (and blood). Stalin was pressing hard for the Western Allies to open a second front in Western Europe, and the decisiveness of Lend-Lease cannot be understated. Lend-Lease trucks were particularly important for the Red Army, which was notoriously short of such equipment. By the end of the war, two out of every three Red Army trucks were foreign-built, including 409,000 cargo trucks and 47,000 jeeps. Those trucks were of vital importance to the Red Army's logistics, as well as to its motorization and increasing mobility. Without the trucks, every Soviet offensive between 1943 and 1945 would have been halted after a shallower penetration, giving the Germans time to rebuild their defenses and forcing the Red Army to carry out another deliberate assault. A symbolic example : Most of the famous and fearsome Katyusha rockets were mounted on American-made trucks. The West also provided to the Soviets 34 million uniforms, 14.5 million pairs of boots, 4.2 million tons of food and 11,800 locomotives and railcars. The US supplied 2.4 times more locomotives (1,900) than those produced domestically, and 11 times more electric locomotives (66) than what the Soviets produced during the war. They also supplied 10 times more railcars than those produced between 1942 and 1945. As for the rails themselves, the U.S. produced 83.3% of all non-narrow-gauge rails (56.6% if we include Soviet narrow-gauge production, which was not supplied via Lend-Lease). Food deliveries by the US very probably saved the USSR from famine in 1942, since it had lost 42% of its cultivated land to the German offensive, thus losing 2/3 of its grain production. It was estimated that there was enough food sent to Russia via Lend-Lease to feed an army of 12,000,000 men half a pound of food a day for the duration of the war. As for raw materials : 350,000 tonnes of aluminium were sent from the US to the USSR, which had minimal domestic production, and Soviet figures admit that without this material, aircraft production would have been halved. To keep those aircrafts in the air, American fuel was used. Imports exceeded domestic production by 150%. Similarly, copper imports accounted for 3/4 of total Soviet production. Imported raw materials and supplies played an important role in the operation of Soviet factories. American imports enabled the Soviets to concentrate almost entirely on industrial and military production. They also helped to stimulate this production, providing the raw materials needed to manufacture weapons and food to feed the workers and soldiers. Without Western Lean-Lease, the Soviet war machine would have been a very different and categorically weaker force. The vital role played by Lend-Lease belies the claims that the Western Allies were merely a sideshow in the war. I'll end this wall of text with the words Nikita Khrushchev wrote in his memoirs : "If the United States had not helped us, we would not have won the war. One-on-one against Hitler's Germany, we would not have withstood its onslaught and would have lost the war. No one talks about this officially, and Stalin never, I think, left any written traces of his opinion, but I can say that he expressed this view several times in conversations with me."
Absolutely exact, and I've never heard any russian citizen claim that Russia won WW2, though it's true. On the contrary, every US citizen believes US won WW2. It's very easy to see it's wrong : just count the dead from US (290.000), and the dead from Russia (25.000.000 !). Without WW2, Russia would have the same population as US, nowadays. I'm no longer a fan of russia (at all) , since February 2022, but the truth has to be said : russia saved europe in 1945, but unfortunately, is trying to destroy it now. History is so "facetious" sometimes...
Cause everybody were waiting, that Soviet Unionw will fall... But... And now a days again some "smart" people think, that ukraine can win against Russia
The Soviet Union was not only Russia but also Ukraine, the Baltic countries, Kazakhstan, etc... In addition, Germany was tied up on the Western Front thanks to America and Great Britain and the Soviet Union received MASSIVE help from America.
@@Aleks96 Most of the help for the USSR from America happened AFTER the decisive events. It helped speed things up, but had precious little influence on, e.g., Stalingrad. Similarly, the Western Front only happened after Germany had lost whole armies in the East.
Nowaday's Russia isn't Soviet Russia anymore. Putin isn't a communist, he is defending an oligarchic system were big corporations run the state. USSR was more than just Russia, you said in the video that the Soviets were attacking Ukraine but back in the days Ukraine was a Soviet Republic ! It might seem like nothing but it is really important to figure who was with who to understand the geopolitical situation we are in now
The "long peace" is still there when you define it by absence of conflict between nuclear powers. Even by "the 44 strongest economies have not fought each other" the statement still is valid, because ukraine was lile 46th when war broke out (wikipedia)
As a proud grand-son and grand-grand-son of French resistants during the occupation, I'm safe to remind people that all german soldiers were not nazis and your own governments are not always your friends. Anyway All wars are gruesome and pointless, humanity has to evolve and learn from the mistakes of the past. The only way we'll break this non-ending cycle of violence and tragedies. And from what we are seeing in the world right now I would say we didn't evolve much since the last century...
One thing we sometimes forget about the Soviet Union in their war against germany, was they had really no other choice than that. Since Germans considered them as undermen, there was no surrender possible, it was either fight or get captured and exterminated in the camps. So yeah, they gave it all they had basically.
And that is why the EU is a peace project, to have the individual Countries so economically connected, that a war between them is not even a thought. Unfortunately, the UK only wanted to join for the economic benefits it entails and rejected political partnership, hence Brexit. France was right to at first veto the UK's attempts to join.
Nonsense. The ECSC was a good idea to keep France and Germany from mass slaughtering eachother's 18-year olds again, but the rest is to circumvent member state democracies in favour of the corporate and banking world.
