Yeah right! It's even ranked no.1 in top novels of MyAnimeList. Because of that, I just started reading it. I'm through volumes 1 & 2 now and all I can say is that it's very thought-provoking topped with good character backstories. Eiji Mikage can really deliver a good story that thrills your mind in a rollercoaster ride.^^
What annoys me about this is that he only talks about the plot of the first volume (which absolutely changes in the second) and the series is much more than that.

Wow, that last part was crazy. :D For light novels, there is one series and one author that I have in mind. For the author, it's Kamachi Kazuma who writes a ton of light novels and all of them that I've read so far are entertaining as hell. And for the light novel series it would be Rokujouma no Shinryakusha. I think the author does a nice job.

I was about to say that! I didn't read a lot of Light Novel, but it's by far the best I've ever read and maybe even one of my favorite asian series (Manga/Anime/LightNovel/drama)
Accel World, Shakugan no Shana, Toaru Majutsu no Index, and Heavy Object are super underrated here in america. It's quite sad knowing how good they really are, mostly because nobody bats an eye at those series. Honestly, if I didn't tell my friends about any of those, i'd be one of probably 50 people in the state of Texas (2nd largest state in the U.S.) who knows about at least one of these and the only person in my city to know about those.

The problem is most light novel series never see an official English release. There is the option of reading fan translations online, but when it comes to reading novels, or anything text-heavy in general, I much prefer reading from a physical book because staring at a screen reading a bunch of text hurts my eyes.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru is in no way underrated, the fans just wouldn't shut up when it got a better rank in 'Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi!' than 'To aru majutsu no Index'. 'Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria' is an amazing light novel that I would definitely recommend though (although it too is not underrated and gets plenty of love), along with To aru majutsu no Index (not really underrated unless you live under a rock), which has a ton of volumes (over 40) and got the light novel award for 'Best Light Novel of 10 years'. It's an amazing long story with a very interesting world and characters.

My personal favorite light novel series is called Kieli. It's a supernatural sci-fi story. It has several dark themes but has an interesting progressive story line that delves into the backstories of both the world and the history of the characters. You end up learning with the characters along the way. It balances the action and calm pretty well too. Overall a good read. I would recommend it. It's nine volumes total and wish it got more love.
I've only read the manga, but I agree with you. "Kieli" is a good series. I discovered it while playing "Dengeki Gakuen RPG: Cross of Venus", through which I also discovered "Usotsuki Mii-kun to Kowareta Maa-chan" and "9S" (that is, the sci-fi series by Tohru Hayama).

Light novels are really limited if you're outside Japan and don't know japanese :/ like I get a bunch of them on kindle but I don't think any of the 7 you mentioned are there nor on th site you mentioned. But the hunt continues cause I found a light novel inside waterstones that isn't available online so a bunch of random translated light novels could be in stores and nobody knows, or maybe just that one. Dude I tried watching the Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere anime, and it was absolutely garbage. I didn't understand anything that was happening, I didn't understand any of the characters or why I should care about them, some characters I just straight up constantly asked who the hell are they when they had their own scenes with lines of dialogue for 5 seconds, and then proceed to disappear for most of the season until the very end where I apparently missed that they had a baby or something? A lot of characters were one note, got really disappointed in the MC, was looking to be a fresh personality I hadn't seen before, but there was just no depth to him. And the boob designs for the anime, honestly some of the weirdest tiddy desgins I've seen in anime in a long time. Like a lot of them were legit bowling balls. I'm not talking about them just being the size of bowling balls, just, Bowling ball shaped and as stiff as bowling balls most of the time. It was weird. I would have liked if they had what the novel had and just kinda....explained everything before they threw 100 characters at me in the first 13 episodes. I'm not sure if that would have really helped my enjoyment of the series though, since the characters themselves weren't all that interesting and again just one note most of the time, so even with a quick explanation I wouldn't have been invested, it would have probably needed to be an entire season just introducing all of them before I had a good grasp on them all and could have the capacity to care about them, like it was just really weird to be introduced to that old man one episode and then he dies and has this really emotional moment with his android sorta wife thing in the next? I only knew you for 4 seconds why are you trying to make me care about this character? There was just, a lot wrong with it. I could probably go on and on.
Kyoukai is hard to get into since you also need to have some knowledge of history, politics, magical systems and a good grasp on how time flows in those novels. The shinto abilities are so far the only ones without a limit as you can essentially use any ability you want as long as you can afford the offering for that ability. One of the merchants showed a few nice examples of it since he could boost his physical parameters to fight a giant mech but also managed to use ranged attacks and stall others. Then there is also someone who can turn into the perfect tank just by performing dances and looking as beautiful as possible all the time ^^ In season 1 for example ( which was the first 3 volumes i think ) you had the political intrigue about killing horizon in a seppuku manner. Kill her and the world would stand up against her killer, give her the proper incentive to kill herself and nobody will bat an eye. Season 2 has more historical battles since it is partially related to the tudors. The battle for Plymouth, Portland, Calais, and Gravelines with the spanish armada is fun as well. But those kind of battles are what i meant with the history knowledge while the specific names also tie in with those. Damn hard to get into without knowing those things, but it is so worth it :D

Don't get turn off straight away, there's English translation lol I think at least some people know Legend of the Sun Knight, 1/2 Prince? I want to recommend Unique Legend, it has vast world, amazing badass characters, antagonist who you can't hate, no cringe, no nonsense, lots of hilarious moment and of course dark elements included, if I were to compare, imagine it's DGM light novel.
Always love that when it comes to light novel, you always put up the "Yahari, Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru", Joey. Because I love it a lot! Then, I realized that now I'm a fan of Watari Wataru's work. Like in Qualidea Project (I only read the Kuzu to Kinka no Qualidea, btw) and I kinda can't wait for his next work Girlish Number.

I think you should've made the number 8 and included Mondaiji-tachi too. I mean, it is getting some attention but it is nowhere near as much as it deserves. I think mondaiji is as good as any other one in this video if not better. And author is definitely a genius. like literally, I don't think you can find someone who can blend high fantasy-mythology-science fiction so perfectly, that easily.
years ago I stumbled upon an the cover image of Zaregoto. I was interested and seared it up. The summery and the preview pages of the Eng translated book got me hooked. unfortunately vol.1 is really rare and a new copy of the eng translated novel of it is 100$ >.< I need to find this cheap couse I really need to read it!! though then again I think only 2 volumes got translated so even if I find vol 1 for cheap and get my hands on vol 2 then I'll still be missing a lot of the story...
You sold me on "Boku no Imouto wa Kanji ga Yomeru"... Sadly it seems neither the novel or manga were ever translated... added to my list of things to do when I can read Japanese :p (The manga art is pretty cool... )
Hey Joey. Not sure if you knew specifically, but the site you linked pretty much has volumes in English of series already in print within North America; so it is not like they are unavailable. Might be different for others, but kinda felt like I was led on to believe that Bookwalker was doing something other than copy Yen Press and Viz Media and various other publishers but in digital version. And many digital versions are available of that site's volumes on major retailers like Amazon, Indigo, and others. As for the series you mentioned, I think some of those get attention, but certainly in their anime format. One novel series already in English that I think very few people in NA know anything about is Book Girl, and it's a shame because it is FANTASTIC for anyone who likes literature as a story concept. I haven't read these but I'm really interested in Vamp! and Etsusa Oohashi because they're by Ryohgo Narita, the same guy who wrote Baccano! and Durarara!!. Oh, and speaking of Durarara!!, he's also writing a spin off called Orihara Izaya to, Yuuyake wo. I don't know if it's available in Europe yet.

Tohru Hayama's "9S" light novel series is well-loved in the East, but is virtually unheard of in the West. I'm only on chapter 1 of volume 3 (out of 11 main volumes), but I can say it's a well-written series.
The Devil Is A Part-timer! I haven't read the light novel series but I have watched the anime and it's a rare 10/10 from me. I'm planning on going to a bookstore that sells manga and stuff and see if it's there. You should read it, it's hilarious!
I actually wonder if you read the entire novel of HakoMari. It's the only novel out of the seven you talked about that I read, and I can say it's a masterpiece, it's just that good (it is noted something like 9.5/10 on MAL). As for a Light Novel that I really think is underrated I would say Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou, while it is quite a heavy ecchi, it still is very dark and deep, especially later on (I reaaally love what the author made of society in the 7th volume), and it's world building is really well done.
I am legitimately interested in all of these light novels. Mostly because I saw the animation of Kyoukai Senjyo no Horizon, Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru, and Seitokai no Ichizon. The other title sound worthy of my attention as well.
Have you read Kawakami's other works? He takes world building to a whole new level since every novel of his is connected to the other. Been reading Owari no chronicle (prequel to Horizon) and it literally explains how things were before and then evolved into how things are in Horizon.
"Danshi Koukousei de Urekko Light Novel Sakka wo Shiteiru keredo, Toshishita no Classmate de Seiyuu no Onnanoko ni Kubi wo Shimerareteiru." is the Light Novel with the longest title, written by Keiichi Sigsawa, author of Kinos Journey. I recommend it to anyone who'd like to get a deeper insight in the japanese Light Novel industry, but beware, there's a lot of dialogue. And when I say that, I mean it exactly like this, the first two volumes of the novel series (it is complete at 3 books) nearly only consists of dialogue between the main character a light novel author, and the female main character, a seiyuu for the anime adaptation of "his" (he hasn't got a name) light novel series, talking about, how "he" got an author. Sorry, if the grammar is somewhat messed up.
My favorite novels are xianxia/xuanhuan novels, where the mc generally cultivates to immortality. Some of my favorite xianxia/xuanhuan novels are Coiling Dragon (IET) , Stellar Transfomations (IET) , Desolate Era (IET) , Tales of Demons & Gods (Mad Snail) , .... . If you are interested all of the listed ones are on WuxiaWorld , a great site for novels!

I've only read the manga, but I agree with you. "Kieli" is a good series. I discovered it while playing "Dengeki Gakuen RPG: Cross of Venus", through which I also discovered "Usotsuki Mii-kun to Kowareta Maa-chan" and "9S" (that is, the sci-fi series by Tohru Hayama).

Light novels are really limited if you're outside Japan and don't know japanese :/ like I get a bunch of them on kindle but I don't think any of the 7 you mentioned are there nor on th site you mentioned. But the hunt continues cause I found a light novel inside waterstones that isn't available online so a bunch of random translated light novels could be in stores and nobody knows, or maybe just that one. It was 'the irregular at magic high school' btw

Dude I tried watching the Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere anime, and it was absolutely garbage. I didn't understand anything that was happening, I didn't understand any of the characters or why I should care about them, some characters I just straight up constantly asked who the hell are they when they had their own scenes with lines of dialogue for 5 seconds, and then proceed to disappear for most of the season until the very end where I apparently missed that they had a baby or something? A lot of characters were one note, got really disappointed in the MC, was looking to be a fresh personality I hadn't seen before, but there was just no depth to him. And the boob designs for the anime, honestly some of the weirdest tiddy desgins I've seen in anime in a long time. Like a lot of them were legit bowling balls. I'm not talking about them just being the size of bowling balls, just, Bowling ball shaped and as stiff as bowling balls most of the time. It was weird. I would have liked if they had what the novel had and just kinda....explained everything before they threw 100 characters at me in the first 13 episodes. I'm not sure if that would have really helped my enjoyment of the series though, since the characters themselves weren't all that interesting and again just one note most of the time, so even with a quick explanation I wouldn't have been invested, it would have probably needed to be an entire season just introducing all of them before I had a good grasp on them all and could have the capacity to care about them, like it was just really weird to be introduced to that old man one episode and then he dies and has this really emotional moment with his android sorta wife thing in the next? I only knew you for 4 seconds why are you trying to make me care about this character? There was just, a lot wrong with it. I could probably go on and on.

Kyoukai is hard to get into since you also need to have some knowledge of history, politics, magical systems and a good grasp on how time flows in those novels.
The shinto abilities are so far the only ones without a limit as you can essentially use any ability you want as long as you can afford the offering for that ability.
One of the merchants showed a few nice examples of it since he could boost his physical parameters to fight a giant mech but also managed to use ranged attacks and stall others.
Then there is also someone who can turn into the perfect tank just by performing dances and looking as beautiful as possible all the time ^^
In season 1 for example ( which was the first 3 volumes i think ) you had the political intrigue about killing horizon in a seppuku manner. Kill her and the world would stand up against her killer, give her the proper incentive to kill herself and nobody will bat an eye.
Season 2 has more historical battles since it is partially related to the tudors. The battle for Plymouth, Portland, Calais, and Gravelines with the spanish armada is fun as well. But those kind of battles are what i meant with the history knowledge while the specific names also tie in with those.
Damn hard to get into without knowing those things, but it is so worth it :D

First, thanks for the recommendation and the web by, will check it out definitely. By the way, I am not knowledgeable about Japanese Light Novels but I have read a few Taiwanese Light Novels. Don't get turn off straight away, there's English translation lol I think at least some people know Legend of the Sun Knight, 1/2 Prince? I want to recommend Unique Legend, it has vast world, amazing badass characters, antagonist who you can't hate, no cringe, no nonsense, lots of hilarious moment and of course dark elements included, if I were to compare, imagine it's DGM light novel.

Then, I realized that now I'm a fan of Watari Wataru's work. Like in Qualidea Project (I only read the Kuzu to Kinka no Qualidea, btw) and I kinda can't wait for his next work Girlish Number.

I think you should've made the number 8 and included Mondaiji-tachi too. I mean, it is getting some attention but it is nowhere near as much as it deserves. I think mondaiji is as good as any other one in this video if not better. And author is definitely a genius. like literally, I don't think you can find someone who can blend high fantasy-mythology-science fiction so perfectly, that easily.

years ago I stumbled upon an the cover image of Zaregoto. I was interested and seared it up. The summery and the preview pages of the Eng translated book got me hooked. unfortunately vol.1 is really rare and a new copy of the eng translated novel of it is 100$ >.<
I need to find this cheap couse I really need to read it!! though then again I think only 2 volumes got translated so even if I find vol 1 for cheap and get my hands on vol 2 then I'll still be missing a lot of the story...
You sold me on "Boku no Imouto wa Kanji ga Yomeru"... Sadly it seems neither the novel or manga were ever translated... added to my list of things to do when I can read Japanese :p

Hey Joey. Not sure if you knew specifically, but the site you linked pretty much has volumes in English of series already in print within North America; so it is not like they are unavailable. Might be different for others, but kinda felt like I was led on to believe that Bookwalker was doing something other than copy Yen Press and Viz Media and various other publishers but in digital version. And many digital versions are available of that site's volumes on major retailers like Amazon, Indigo, and others. As for the series you mentioned, I think some of those get attention, but certainly in their anime format. One novel series already in English that I think very few people in NA know anything about is Book Girl, and it's a shame because it is FANTASTIC for anyone who likes literature as a story concept. Anyway, cheers!
I haven't read these but I'm really interested in Vamp! and Etsusa Oohashi because they're by Ryohgo Narita, the same guy who wrote Baccano! and Durarara!!. Oh, and speaking of Durarara!!, he's also writing a spin off called Orihara Izaya to, Yuuyake wo. I don't know if it's available in Europe yet.

Tohru Hayama's "9S" light novel series is well-loved in the East, but is virtually unheard of in the West. I'm only on chapter 1 of volume 3 (out of 11 main volumes), but I can say it's a well-written series.

The Devil Is A Part-timer! I haven't read the light novel series but I have watched the anime and it's a rare 10/10 from me. I'm planning on going to a bookstore that sells manga and stuff and see if it's there. You should read it, it's hilarious!
I actually wonder if you read the entire novel of HakoMari. It's the only novel out of the seven you talked about that I read, and I can say it's a masterpiece, it's just that good (it is noted something like 9.5/10 on MAL).
As for a Light Novel that I really think is underrated I would say Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou, while it is quite a heavy ecchi, it still is very dark and deep, especially later on (I reaaally love what the author made of society in the 7th volume), and it's world building is really well done.
I am legitimately interested in all of these light novels. Mostly because I saw the animation of Kyoukai Senjyo no Horizon, Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru, and Seitokai no Ichizon. The other title sound worthy of my attention as well.
Have you read Kawakami's other works? He takes world building to a whole new level since every novel of his is connected to the other. Been reading Owari no chronicle (prequel to Horizon) and it literally explains how things were before and then evolved into how things are in Horizon.
I've only ever read two light novel series, which is, Another, and I just started reading Psycome. I will definitely check these out.

"Danshi Koukousei de Urekko Light Novel Sakka wo Shiteiru keredo, Toshishita no Classmate de Seiyuu no Onnanoko ni Kubi wo Shimerareteiru." is the Light Novel with the longest title, written by Keiichi Sigsawa, author of Kinos Journey.
I recommend it to anyone who'd like to get a deeper insight in the japanese Light Novel industry, but beware, there's a lot of dialogue. And when I say that, I mean it exactly like this, the first two volumes of the novel series (it is complete at 3 books) nearly only consists of dialogue between the main character a light novel author, and the female main character, a seiyuu for the anime adaptation of "his" (he hasn't got a name) light novel series, talking about, how "he" got an author.
