Btw, shoutout & kudos to your camera person for their patience and steady hand throughout these longer videos. I'd probably start getting cranky after 10 minutes, lol

lol I know it isn't easy holding the camera steady for those walk arounds. Most shoots are on a tripod and a zoom lens is used and the camera stays stationary. Thanks for watching/commenting!

I've not been watching your videos in order (I just recently discovered your channel), so it's interesting to have first seen your garden later in the season, then see it in its early season state. I've always thought of a garden as something you plant early in the season, but had never considered that it could evolve over the season, with new plantings. I like that you seem to mix your expertise with some thoughtful experimentation (and whimsy). BTW, your farm setting is truly beautiful. It was easier to see the surroundings when you garden plants were smaller. I'm happy I discovered your channel.

Between the never-ending rain here in central NY and the kamakaze Japanese beetles, I’m lucky to have anything in the garden!
I had no luck with borage, bee balm, or marigolds directly sowed this year. Constantly soaked ground might be the culprit. And 5 days of rain next week as well. I’m soaking up the sunshine vicariously!

Mostly hot and dry, but just when you think everything is going to start turning brown, we get thundershowers and everything gets really green again. The last few springs and summers have actually been pretty hot and dry in the UK, particularly here in the south-east. Really good for growing tomatoes! However this year, we had one of the wettest Mays on record, followed by regular rain during the summer, so our lawns have been kept green. Last year they all went brown in the summer!

      Hey YJ!
I'm glad you like it! I like having the grass walkways and actually that was done for a reason. That garden sits on a very slight grade and when there is a heavy rain, you get soil erosion and the grass paths totally stop that with just having small exposed areas of beds. If it was just one big garden, I'd have a huge problem with soil washing away.
Sharing...It's all my pleasure. I love what I do!

I'm not sure if anyone commented on this but I believe those schwarzenberren are edible type of black nightshade. Just make sure you have the edible strain because we have the unedible variant called mustakoiso popping up in fields here in Finland. It's considered a weed that plagues specifically potato fields as it steals nutrients from potatoes. it is related to potato and tomato. You can eat both the ripe berries and boiled leaves. Just make sure the berries are ripe. The raw berry is more toxic than the ripe one.
Edit: It shouldn't be terribly toxic but eating a large number of berries is probably going to give you upset stomach

Looks fabulous Mark! I find the mexican sunflowers attract the most monarchs here in zone 5b upstate NY so it's an annual here. So many great ideas and not sure how you keep up with it all. The borage gets huge and reseeds itself every year. Four years ago I planted and now it's comes up all over every year and loaded with pollinators. 😁 Your potatoes look fantastic and mine have never looked so good as they have this year. I've never tasted or grown ground cherries so may have to give it a go. As far as cherry tomatoes go have you ever tries sun peach? Oh my they are my favorite and picked up seeds from Johnny's, just soooooo good! Really love your garden Mark and so inspiring to us all! 💚😁👍 Thanks again for the tour and may the abundance be yours for all your hard work. I can't believe it took me so long to see this channel! Great work Mark! Everything looks beautiful. My garden is really small compared to yours even though I have 6 acres I live on. But I am one disabled person so I grow for one person, I love your cattle panels and that's what I'm lacking. I put up anything I could find for the cucumbers, an old camera tripod, shelving that fell out of a closet that now the pole beans grow up words on. Your garden is magnificent. Thank you so much for sharing! ( Love your pup... I raised two Rottweilers and they were my best friends for many years. 🐾🦴🦴Now I have seven cats, all rescues).

I have seeds for Blush for next year so interesting what you thought of it. Sunrise Bumblebee is a super pretty bicolor, very juicy and tastes good. Not super sweet, but good. I'll have to look into sun sugar. I'm doing sungold this year, how do they compare? Champagne Bubbles is the sweetest. Always want that in my garden. Hey Mark & Holly - another great video. I'm curious about your choice in paste tomatoes. Have you grown San Marzano? My first time growing them this year. What other paste tomatoes have you tried and rejected?

    • @marksgardenlife5971
      @marksgardenlife5971  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Bryan!
San Marzano's are a great "Paste Tomato" due to their low water content... Less reducing (boiling off the water) is necessary in the pot...
I personally prefer canned tomatoes because I eat them straight from the jar... a quart jar of canned tomatoes makes a great lunch.
So in my case, I prefer a texture that is less mealy than traditional paste tomatoes...
My tomatoes have a higher water content, but they also have a better flavor and texture than something like a San Marzano or a Roma.
I personally find Romas and the like to be mealy, and sometimes sour, which in my case is a turn off, but if the end product is sauce, the mealiness doesn't matter at all, and sugar can be added as well.
I basically prefer the tomatoes with better flavor and texture as they are, such as Amish Paste or Jersey Devil which also can be used for sauce, rather than a dryer sauce tomato that doesn't taste as good when eaten whole like Roma, or the almost identical Milano Plumb, or San Marzano.
      I hope this helps!
      Best,
      -Mark

Nice to hear from you! The garden.... I just have a friend who comes on 1 weekend day to give me a hand. The property.....that has a large full/part-time staff year around. The property is huge and requires a enormous amount of maintenance which is never ending. It's like owning a very expensive car. It's one thing to buy it, it's a entire different thing maintaining it as far as cost.
      Happy Gardening!

      Hi Vicki!
Thank you! I plant the Marigolds because they tend to go for the flowers on them. The season for the beetle only last 2 or 3 weeks and than they are gone. I find white Marigolds work best for drawing them, but all the white Marigolds had been sold in the retail by the time I was ready to plant in the garden this year, so I used yellow. Thanks for watching/commenting!

Hey Mark. Since my spring/summer garden has been decimated by groundhogs, I was think of replanting zucchini, yellow squash and cucumbers. I had some gorgeous eggplants that were loaded with fruit and they chewed or ate every one of them. Once I trap them (not going well at the moment), what suggestions would you have for replanting? They haven’t wrecked my tomatoes except for a few low hangers. On my deck, I have dinasaur and curly kale, basil, and rapini (2nd harvest). I’m really a vanilla grower, nothing fancy. So what things would be good to plant now into the fall? I’m in zone 6. Thanks.

      Hi David!
My first thought is how our Rottweilers tend to keep them at bay lol... But in a situation like yours, if they are present, they can be very destructive... If you do manage to keep them away or relocate them, there are a bunch of summer crops and fall crops to look forward to... In zone 6 you still have plenty of time for most anything...
It's more of a matter of what you don't have time for.... Tomatoes, Peppers, the long haul stuff won't have enough time to produce a whole lot for you.
I've heard sweet corn makes good groundhog bait...
Once more, it's cheap and easy to get right now.
      Thank you and good luck!

Are you concerned about the chemicals from the landscape timbers leeching into the soil?

    • @marksgardenlife5971
      @marksgardenlife5971  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there!
      Great question!
I have found that much of the concern surrounding Pressure Treated Lumber stems from chemicals that used to commonplace in the lumber industry... namely Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA). The arsenic makes a very effective wood preservative... In 2003, the EPA determined it unsafe for homeowner use... lumber companies then discontinued using this in products labeled for homeowner use... Today it is still used in commercial applications such as telephone poles.
The lumber I used is treated with Copper Azole.
I chose this product because I felt it was relatively safe for me... and to construct the beds in something like cedar or white oak alternatives would have costed me a small fortune to construct on this scale.
I generally recommend before using anything, familiarize yourself with the chemical, toxicity, and type of exposure.
Here is a publication from Iowa State University Extension worth taking a look at:
      www.extension.iastate.edu/smallfarms/toxicity-concerns-about-raised-bed-construction-materials
      Thank you for reaching out!
