Depends on if u actually need the ram. If u only have a few tabs open and dont run a bunch of heavy softwares at once, 8 is perfectly fine in my opinion.
PLEASE Compare !! M3 air base model 8 GB Ram 8 core CPU & 8 core GPU VS M2 air model upgraded with 16 GB Ram and 8 core CPU & 10 core GPU 8 core Because is it worth upgrading the M2 or Taking the base M3
Manjaro and Chromebook Dev here, using Swap will severely degrade your hard drive extremely fast. Swap should only be a last resort option to prevent your OS from freezing! It is handy but if you want your laptop to last you longer then 2 years then you should never exceed your maximum ram and run into Swap
Around 4GB of swap can be sent to the dRAM, which handles the SSD algorithms. It is about 2GB per module. So you can use 3-4GB of swap without impacting the flash storage as it uses the more resilient RAM cache of the SSD modules. So that is 12GB. If you include compression, 8GB is equivalent to 14GB of usable RAM if you use it for multiple apps. If you are using more than 14GB and trespassing into the flash, you have made a mistake and bought the wrong config. You should have bought 16GB.
Apple has sold thousands of 8GB Airs over many years and there is no evidence of SSDs dying after 2 years. No news reports, no Reddit threads...nothing. Part of the reason is that if you exceed 8GB, swap is not the first thing that happens: RAM compression is. Swap is the third line of memory management, after real RAM and compressed RAM.
The start of the video Max Tech is checking the finger prints on the inside of bot M2 & M3 variants. It now common knowledge that only the outside of the laptop M3 has the special coating to help reduce finger prints. These guys are meant to be all over the specs 😂

Why did you turn on voice isolation on the M3 and not on the M2? It doesn’t make sense to compare the two with the different modes and some folks might think that voice isolation is exclusive to the new model…
@@racecarjonny8460 No it isn't. That's why I'm wondering why they make it even more confusing. Apple added this on their comparison page and people kept talking about new microphones but the voice isolation can be activated on all new Macbooks (and most iPhones) and I guess that's what they did here in this video for the M3 but not the M2. I certainly can activate it on my M1 Macbook Air and it makes a huge difference. So in order to really compare the two Microphones I would have loved to hear the M2 with this same feature activated in order to see whether it got any better on the M3...
@@racecarjonny8460It‘s a bit hidden (only Apple knows why). You have to be in a call and then click on the little symbol of the active app and activate it there. And you have to activate it for each app individually. Easiest is to google „microphone modes“ or how to activate voice isolation. I have absolutely no idea why you can’t just activate it globally in the settings menu for all apps.

I have a M1 MBP, and iPhone 13, 13 mini. What I want to see in my electronics more than anything are Solid State Batteries. SSB would provide same energy for half the weight. Happy with processors and cameras but add SS Batteries to decrease weight. The iPhone would weigh what a mini weighs. The pro Max would be what the pro is. Make it so Tim Cook.
I was in the Apple store yesterday where I compared the form factors of the various Apple notebook computers. The 13 and 15 inch MB Air notebook computers are ridiculously light. The 15 inch MB Air is certainly much lighter and maneuverable than the 4.8 pound 16 inch MB Pro though I certainly did not feel that the 16 inch MB Pro was physically unmanageable given its size though I could certainly see it as a burden for those who are frequently on-the-go with it throughout the day. I would go with the 15 inch MB Air instead if the larger screen is a key factor and higher level performance options that are offered by the MB Pro / Max lineup are not a key factor. I would not dread carrying the 15 inch MB Air computer around and using it in various locations throughout the day in comparison to the 16 inch MB Pro. I believe that the sweet spot is the 14 inch MB Pro when both performance and portability are important factors as the screen is just large enough for productivity tasks like spreadsheets, software development, etc.
So you already did a video on the ssd speeds for the M3 MBA, so did you mean that'd you'd do one to figure out about the MBP models? I'm not sure if I misunderstood what you meant after you commented on the increased read and write speeds.
@chidorirasenganz I already understood the issue with the MBA models so I was basing it one what he said in the video to understand what he was referring to exactly. (Based on my original response)
Just get a M3 Pro at that price...and use an external hard drive if you need more space because the better CPU, screen, and cooling is worth more than spec'ing out a MacBook Air
I just bought an M2 MacBook Air 8 gigs of ram 512 hard drive costing me $1268 including tax and that’s a killer deal here in Sweden where Apple products are just so expensive. One week ago it would’ve been $1804 for the same machine. I’m just a normal user and don’t need the extra ram. 8 gigs is well enough for me however I do need a large hard drive so I went for the larger hard drive and since the 512 version has faster SSD I went with that. I hate carrying around extra hard drives. I love the fact that you can get the old hardware so much cheaper when Apple releases new products. The M chips are so good that the difference is negligible from one generation to the other,, at least for me who isn’t a developer or a content creator or something like that - just a normal computer guy 😂
EXCELLENT and by far the BEST comparison between M2 vs M3. To all those who are cribbing about 8GB not being enough, I use a 15 inch Mc MacBook Air base model (256 GB Storage and 8GB RAM) for Final Cut Pro, Photoshop CC and Lightroom Classic CC - it works flawlessly without any real world noticeable throttling. Do not believe all the nay sayers about the 8GB RAM not being enough. It I more than enough, as Apple software vs hardware optimisation is far superior to any Windows PC out there for the same price. Plus a Mac will easily last you more than 6 years flawlessly.
i will study industrial design and i will be using 3d designing programs next semester, i also use so many plugins at after effects, do you think 256gbs with 8gb ram is good? or 512gb with 8 gb ram?

I am however going to upgrade to the base version of M3 15 inch MacBook Air 512GB storage but 8GB only within the next 2 weeks or so.
@@cutebunnixo Three reasons: 1. This review actually 😀 2. Originally planned to keep my M2 Air for 6 years(till 2029), but last month I managed to get a tiny 1mm chip on my screen as I closed the lid with a big stapler pin accidentally left on the keyboard 😤 - heard a dirty sound, thought the screen cracked, but luckily it was just a tiny chip and everything works perfectly, and pretty sure it’ll work great for another 5 or more years. Others can’t even spot the crack, but I know where the chip is and it bugs me 😁 3. Apple is giving £700 for trade in, which is pretty decent , so I only have to add another £700 for the M3 Air (going to pay off in 12 months with 0% interest)

Can you make a comparison between M3 MacBook Air and M3 MacBook Pro? Maybe highlight the differences and what more you get? Maybe give your opinion on who should get the MacBook Air versus who should get the MacBook Pro? Great video.
As a person who loves computers honestly the price for these 13 inch powerhouses are amazing, the ram and storage speed price is ridiculous but other laptops on windows OS are an extra 200 for 32gb with 512gb and a 1080p screen of course that doesn't apply for every laptop you could hundred percent find another laptop for an even better price however. For someone who knows what he wants out of a laptop and for the price honestly thats pretty darn good. The storage problem can be fixed with an external SSD. the ram 16GB will be what i need plus with that you get the upgraded CPU for £1299 and honestly this is the best productivity beast and I am gonna get it. Since if I want to game or do extreme workloads I have a powerhouse of a desktop. Plus this is one of the highest praised laptops out there so honestly I can put aside some of bull from apple.

I considered the m2 and m3. The mic quality on the m3, listening for real, is noticeably better than the m2. The WiFi 6e gives double the speeds (depending on your modem). Better gaming (ray tracing etc), dynamic cache … plus the extra year of updates makes the m3 a more attractive choice for me. But the m2 is available for good discounts. The question that most reviewers are failing to answer is how much better the m3 will be with AI over the m2. But I guess most people won’t know that until later in the year. So, I’ll hold on for now.
Hii Max, You Support Us very Well❤, Thank You, But I Just yesterday purchased M2 macbook air, It has Slower SSD, I am in my 1st year CS Engeneering, I will have to use it for next 4 years Also, What Should I do Right now? Or Can I Buy Ssd and Enclosure And Use to run Coding and Programming application?
The slower SSD will make a difference if you use a lot of swaps. That is because the random reads and writes matter in 99.99% of your daily flow, and M2 and M3 are similar. The M3 is only faster in sequential benchmarks but moot as the bottleneck for an average Air user will be the slower external storage.
I just upgraded today and I love my M3! I had the 15 inch M2 MacBook air (which I only bought in Nov 23) but I never did like the color and the 15 was really just too big. So I took advantage of a good price and Best Buy's trade in program and for only $300 out of pocket I upgraded to the M3 and went from 256 SSD to 512...VERY happy with the new machine. Also, I took a chance on the midnight since the fingerprint issue was said to be resolved and it's great...shows fingerprints less than the starlight color I had before and looks so sleek. I think I'll be keeping this machine for quite some time.
How are the speakers in terms of volume? Do they go pretty loud? We don't have a TV in the bedroom and love to watch movies on the iPad Air 4 and it has great volume. I'm trying to find a comparison or general feedback. My hp laptop from a few years ago is too quiet for this use
@@Jenny_Rose_ They are plenty loud enough for listening to at a desk but I'm not sure if you'd be able to hear them well enough all the way across your bedroom...just depends on how large the room is I guess. I would most likely use a Bluetooth speaker and have it close to where you are sitting in bed. But they have great sound as I watch way too much TH-cam on them!
Throttling is a good thing on AIR, I think they did good thing with making it throttle little bit earlier than M2. Should happen even more aggressively I think. Better to have lower temperatures of the bottom case for lap usage. CPU is crazy fast anyhow, always faster than full speed M2. There is also Low-power mode that you can use, which reduces CPU/GPU power usage by a lot, about 66%, and its performance is almost as fast as full speed M1, which is amazing with so little power. So you can also run it like that, save a bit of battery, have much lower temps, and M1 CPU performance which are fine in 90% use cases.
You can get a 15" M2 air with 512gb (won't suffer from the slower ssd speeds of the 256gb) for $100 less than the base 256gb 15" M3 Air at Best Buy right now. Seems like the better buy unless you really need the extra speed or dual monitor support.

The speaker comparison, was that at max volume? We've been considering an M3 for various reasons and watching movies/shows in bed is one of them. I do it with my Air 4 all the time and find it cozy lol. My older HP laptop is pretty quiet maxed out compared to the iPad. Can anyone please tell me how loud M2 and/or M3 are in comparison to the iPad Air 4?
I got a M1 13" 8/256 for $849 and plan to get the M3 15" 16/512 BUT I'll be paying $1699 for it which is double what I paid for 3 years ago. I dunnoe whether it's worth that much!?
Please compare m2 & m3 with 16/512. We all know the m2 base comp is gonna be poor. My dilemma is keeping m2 air 15 16/1tb bought at 1500 or returning it for m3 air 15 16/512 at 1600 or 16/1tb at 1780.
I’m sorry. But you’re telling me that the read speeds went from good on the M1, to bad on the M2, to the same as the M1 on the M3. And y’all are going crazy about it☠️
is there another comparison m2 16 gb vs m3 16 gb? I'm thinking about buying a MacBook Air (my first). Which configuration is recommended for simple image editing with Lightroom / Photoshop?
Since it is 100$ difference on apple website, better to go with M3. If you can get M2 for 250$ difference, or cheaper, I would say M2 then (and you can get applecare+ 3 years then, helps with accidental damage and much easier to sell for more money later if you want to switch to m4/5)
I feel like he just wants everything to be better. The fingerprint test, video/sound, etc. Only his testable values were not surprisingly better. And, ya, the m3 is super dope. But if you’re not doing video editing, or other high CPU tasks, what are you gonna do with all that wasted power? Save your cash. Unless you’re like most of us who just like having the best regardless lol (first world problems)
For normal office work you won’t notice a difference and the swap won’t damage the ssd in a way you’ll ever gonna notice. So if you, like me, are someone who uses it for browsing, TH-cam, Netflix and some office work, save yourself the 16gb
I have been using the 8GB base MB Pro 13 M1 for 3.5 years, and the SSD is as healthy as the day I bought it. Any swap is dealt with by the dRAM so does not impact on the flash storage at all.

Depends on if u actually need the ram. If u only have a few tabs open and dont run a bunch of heavy softwares at once, 8 is perfectly fine in my opinion.
You should make a comparison between M2 15 inch vs M3 15 inch
The screen is great. The 15 has slightly better thermals than the 13. Otherwise....exactly the same.
There's no point of 15 inch Air. 14 pro is better
Why did you do the mic noise test in a studio where you'll be in ideal conditions?
the M2 MacBook Air and the M3 MacBook Air are just like the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. They're identical.
Yes, i'd Like to see the comparisons of M2 and M3 MacBook Air 15" with 8GB and 16GB RAM respectively. Thank Max.
PLEASE Compare !!
M3 air base model 8 GB Ram 8 core CPU & 8 core GPU
VS
M2 air model upgraded with 16 GB Ram and 8 core CPU & 10 core GPU
8 core
Because is it worth upgrading the M2 or Taking the base M3
Go with upgraded m2
I'm blown away by the M3 MBA I wish it came with Super Retina XDR display with 120Hz refresh rate thats a deal breaker for me
Manjaro and Chromebook Dev here, using Swap will severely degrade your hard drive extremely fast.
Can you use multiple displays and keep the lid open utilizing a USB-C hub with HDMI out to an HDMI splitter?
don't think you can do things in MAC like a PC
No
Not without other software.
The start of the video Max Tech is checking the finger prints on the inside of bot M2 & M3 variants.
It now common knowledge that only the outside of the laptop M3 has the special coating to help reduce finger prints.
These guys are meant to be all over the specs 😂
I dont know which one to go for either m3 air 13" or m3 15" because macbooks are so good for using ehen you are visually impaired. My question is should i go with 8gb ram 256 storageor 512gb . I’ only gonna use it as a regular. No video editing or heavy apps and things. My iphone also got 512gb storage. What should I do or what do i do 😊😅?
Why did you turn on voice isolation on the M3 and not on the M2? It doesn’t make sense to compare the two with the different modes and some folks might think that voice isolation is exclusive to the new model…
I think it is exclusive to the new model.
But I might be wrong and they had it activated when recording on the M2 as well.
@@TheSpamabys How to activate it on the Macbook Air m1? I have that device too.
@@racecarjonny8460It‘s a bit hidden (only Apple knows why). You have to be in a call and then click on the little symbol of the active app and activate it there. And you have to activate it for each app individually. Easiest is to google „microphone modes“
or how to activate voice isolation. I have absolutely no idea why you can’t just activate it globally in the settings menu for all apps.
3:52 My m1 air easily hits 3000+ on both read and write speeds
I’ve seen the 15” Air 16/1tb on sale at Best Buy for $400 off. This is the M2 model.
What is better? To take air 13 m2 with bigger SSD or storage or take m3 with 8/256? Buying a laptop for studying and tutoring, browsing the net. 🥺
I have bought m2 15 inch base model few days back and i have still have the return window open should i buy the m3 one by spending some more money or shall i stick to m2 15 inch
Naah m2 is just fine, tbh you won't even notice the difference
Those SSD speeds are like from 2012 💀
They are laptops not PCs
Happy with my M2 Macbook Air ❤
Should i wait for M4?
What computer do you have right now?
Isnt the coating only on the outside???
Max, great video. A video comparing both machines using the latest Parallels and Windows 11 would be helpful.
So you already did a video on the ssd speeds for the M3 MBA, so did you mean that'd you'd do one to figure out about the MBP models? I'm not sure if I misunderstood what you meant after you commented on the increased read and write speeds.
The previous M2 model had a slower ssd since they used one drive instead of 2. The new model fixes that and the pros never had that problem
@chidorirasenganz I already understood the issue with the MBA models so I was basing it one what he said in the video to understand what he was referring to exactly. (Based on my original response)
I think they just filmed this video before the SSD video even though the other one was posted first.
@joseph_p That would make sense.
Wonder how a 24 ram, 2tb one would run, thinking about maxing it out to buy one? Worth 3k or not? 15 inch of course.
Just get a M3 Pro at that price...and use an external hard drive if you need more space because the better CPU, screen, and cooling is worth more than spec'ing out a MacBook Air
Are both the same size? (I can't seem to figure out whether the 13 inch on both are the same size). Will skins/cases for M2 work on M3?
Yes for size
Alright @MaxTechOfficial guys,
Now run the tests with a laptop cooling stand. 😁 I want to see how close it gets to the 14” M3 MacBook Pro.
Idk about a “ deal “ 1200 for 8gb ram and 60hz display…
@@SlowgrindT Well… it’s Apple 😉 You have to compare Apples to Apples 😂
@@GlennEdell true lol.
@@cutebunnixo I have never done any designing work so not sure of the requirements, but I do a lot of 4K video editing on the base 15 inch MacBook Air M2 with 256GB & 8GB. But the storage is not enough for me so I use an 4TB external SSD , which works for my needs. I am however going to upgrade to the base version of M3 15 inch MacBook Air 512GB storage but 8GB only within the next 2 weeks or so.
@@CR-rb1fx thanks a lot for your reply. may i ask what made u decide to upgrade to m3?
@@cutebunnixo Three reasons:
1. This review actually 😀
2. Others can’t even spot the crack, but I know where the chip is and it bugs me 😁
3. Apple is giving £700 for trade in, which is pretty decent , so I only have to add another £700 for the M3 Air (going to pay off in 12 months with 0% interest)
@@CR-rb1fx sounds fair haha! i was just not sure if i should go with m3 or m2. thank you for your answer, i wish u long and productive years with your new mac!
I am more than satisfied with my M2 MBA. I will upgrade when the m4 m5 will come. Those machines are more than powerful
I hazard to suggest....the vast majoeity could tell no difference between an M2 or an M3.
Hello. Does version with 512GB SSD contains one module 512GB or two of 256GB each?
Thank you. Grate review.
Greetings from Poland!
Hello. Which one will be better? Basic configuration of M3 Air or M2 witch 10GPU, 16GBRAM and 512GBSSD?
No foto and video editing. Only normal use. I want to spend my money well.
should i get a m2 1tb 24 gigs for just under 2k.
or an m3 512gb 16 gb for just under 2k. the m3 is a bit cheaper
Air m3 or pro m1 14 in?
Plus this is one of the highest praised laptops out there so honestly I can put aside some of bull from apple.
hi
i want to buy the 15 inch MB air, but should I buy the M2 version (cheaper) or the new M3 version..i only use it for web browsing, watching movies , some easy game, basic photo editing .
M2
I’m looking at getting one of these. I was thinking of getting 16gb of ram and 512gb with the m2 would the m3 with 8gb of ram be comparable?
not even clost the m2 with 16gb ram is wayyy better than m3 with 8gb.
Im cashstrapped but i need a new laptop. Should i go for a M2 Macbook Air with 16gb ram or M3 with 8gb ram? Will be used for hime based work so admin stuff and video conferencing. Word, excel, powerpoint. Not thinking of editing videos or photos anytime soon
This is my problem right now. How did you go?
@@ExtendoCord went with m3 with 8gb memory. I figured,my tasks arent that demanding and i get longer software support
what did you decide in the end bro?
@SIMONREMISH i got the base m3.
@@traceysmith311 well if I did I would have it sitting in bed in front of us so not super far. Do you think that would work?
@@Jenny_Rose_I’m sure it would be fine.
@@traceysmith311 thank you! That really helps ☺️
Sticking with M1
Me too
Throttling is a good thing on AIR, I think they did good thing with making it throttle little bit earlier than M2.
I bought the M2 air 3 weeks ago not realising the M3 was coming out! Just annoyed as I have 2GB wifi and the M3 could have taken advantage of it
Loved this video!!! Can u do a comparison between mba m1,m2,and m3 because rn i have a mba m1 base model and thinking to upgrade???plz leave a reply or a video man.appreciate it brother...
Could you make a comparison between 8gb 256gb m3 and 16gb 512gb m3? Both are on shelf models.
You should have included a M1 model as well. People are more likely to be upgrading from that to the m3.
And y’all are going crazy about it☠️
SSD speed is more or less like the M1, that is quite disappointing, no progress in 4 year?
Don’t remember which app you’re using for temp and perf monitor
is there another comparison m2 16 gb vs m3 16 gb?
For me the biggest concern is swap file usage on the SSD. 16g minimal ram is way better in overall performance and longevity.
Really expect the comparison between M3 Air and Pro now🙏
Hey max! If im getting the 15” inches with 16gb ram and 256gb SSD will i get the 2 nand chip? I dont need much space in SSD actually but ram for several chrome tabs opened
Yes, two NAND on 256GB and the 512GB.
Where's the source? I know the M2 that 256 is SINGLE NAND. SEE (Website) "my work drive" (article title) "The performance Difference: Apple’s M1 vs. M2 Processors with Single NAND Chip SSDs"@@ahaimes6320
1:20 interesting you see a difference on these surfaces, bc as I understand it, Apple did only coat the outside of the body 😂
Fast forward 7 months later: Best buy has M2 Air 16gb 256ssd at $799 and M3 Air 16gb 256ssd at $1099. No brainer: M2 Air.
