    Shostakovich's work is greatly respected and deeply admired throughout the world. Although with this symphony being extraordinary and all it seriously frightens me. Only because I can hear thousands of shattered cries and horrifying screams of unbearable anguish, and to convey that into music is incredibly powerful.

    Magnificent interpretation. It is also worth of note the education and good manners of the spectators, who do not clap for almost 10 seconds at the end of this piece.

    Masterwork, and such a musical tragedy... the final slow waltz is, perhaps, the most moving and sad of all music.

    Beautiful music. Full of subtleties. Moving words. I didnt have much idea what happened at Babi Yar other than what I read coldly and succinctly on the back of a record sleeve in 1975. When I researched more recently I cried.

    Unfathomable hope in the face of acute repression and cruelty. Shostakovich's music (as separate from the person) is the embodiment of Solzhenitsyn's experience and ultimate viewpoint. I had the privilege of hearing the 13th AND the 4th on the same night a few years back - sledgehammers me every time I hear it (and think about it). Let's keep faith with the good things in humanity, eh ?

    Excellent performance! This symphony first peaked my interest into learning more about Shostakovich. I vividly remember viewing a live performance of this piece years back in my youth and upon hearing the first movement, I was completely frightened out of my mind on how horrifying the music evoked me... and that was just the first movement....

    Paul Hanson: When you mentioned your wife was playing contrabassoon, I was reminded of the many Mahler works Claudio Abbado has on You Tube and that he hand picked many of the musicians in the Orchestras. Luckily I've been able to meet several members of the Minnesota Orchestra after a few concerts, and at least the musicians know I am a composer even though after 6 "no's" I've given up trying to get any kind of employment at the MN Orchestra.

    Interesting about the text... I sang this under Gergiev in 2006, as well as at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in NYC shortly before, with Yevtushenko himself reading the title poem in commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the Babi Yar massacre. I'd think he would have read the uncensored version for this occasion, and we in the choir did not have to learn two different versions....

    Though stirring in its vocal melodies, Shostakovich's Symphony No.13 was first emerging as a political gesture and then as a musical masterpiece. Challenging the bottomline of Soviet government's anti-semitic sentiment, it really stimulated those who were being in charge of cultural ministry of that country. It was an issue even Krushchev did not dare to touch, as sensitive as the Hungarian Revolt's impact to Ukrainian nationalism.

    I am not very fond of the Gergiev's performance for the simple reason that he chose the second version of the text which was comprised by Yevtushenko himself under a heavy pressure of the Soviet authorities. Otherwise they would simply cancel the performances of the work in the USSR. The reason is that thge poem makes clear allusions to the Russian antisemitism, and thus touches a tabu subject in the Soviet union (Molotov -Riobentrop, "Doctors affair int he50s. should be performed with or. text

    Thank you for this information. I was always under the impression that the massacre at Babi Yar was perpetrated solely against Jews. To minimise this stark fact is shocking and only serves to show that anti-semitism was, and probably still is, still alive in Russia.Of course,millions of Russians were victims of the nazis,but Shostakovich's intention (and Yeveshenko) was to show his hatred and rejection of anti-semitism.A not very popular theme then and now.What great moral courage!

  • @GLaDOS22
    @GLaDOS22 13 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    @yuripo78 It's all a matter of opinion. This symphony describes the tragedy of the Ukrainian massacre at Babi Yar, so there is the responsibility to convey all that, but this singers voice doesn't bother me at all. The music provides the emotion. The singer does sound kind of monotone at times, but often, those that speak firsthand of tragedy sound in shock, monotone, emotionless, heavy, and contemplative. Shostakovich knew it all too well, and captures the emotion perfectly in this piece.

    A very nice symphony but extremely dull performance. The music in this performance stands still, their is no rhytmic mouvement.I miss the russian spirit. The recording with Kondrashin is my number one. The quality of that recording is not so deep as this one but it is so thrilling and deepgoing musically that every other recording is in minor.

      I cannot agree more with you. I could write a full essay of things wrong with this performance. The worst mistake in this, I think, is a slip between the flutes and strings at 21:04. Since I discovered Kondrashin's performance (these are the people who gave the premiere and would have had direct instructions from the composer himself), I have considered that to be the greatest recording of this outstanding piece.

    Nuevamente, Shostakovich nos hace en trágico retrato de los horrores de la guerra. Babi Yar es a los rusos lo que Katyn es a los polacos. Los otros movimientos son los puntos que irónicamente trataba con maestría, para denunciar a los regímenes totalitarios como el nazi y el soviético. Sinfonía muy rusa y en cierto modo hace un pequeño homenaje a Mussorgsky .
