Yes exactly! That's what I found most horrifying about the film. It's like those nightmares I get where me and my mom for example are running from a masked guy who wants to shoot us, then I look to my side and I know it's mom, but she too is all of a sudden masked and wants to shoot me as well! That's mainly how I interpreted the movie.

Aside from the fact that the satanist women, especially Minnie, coule do that to a fellow woman, Guy's betrayal pissed me off the most. Because he isn't even one of them, he just did it for fame. The plausibility is beyond eerie, especially for young women. I, myself, am almost 25. Getting married, this year. Moving into a larger apartment. And based on our plan but completely coincidental, if I become pregnant when we begin trying, my pregnancy timeline will be the same as Rosemary's and I would NEVER suspect my man of doing anything like that to me....But, neither did Rosemary.

That makes ot so creepy because it takes somethibg familiar and safe and makes it apart of a disturbing cult

It makes a lot of sense if you think about it, though. They couldn’t infiltrate and control Rosemary’s life (and monitor her pregnancy) unless they were trusted, respected friends and neighbors.
Rosemary’s weakness was that she was essentially a good person. She was respectful and deferential to her seniors. She trusted and loved her husband. She was grateful to her neighbors for their help and attention. She was a good quality person herself and obviously very young and sheltered. Most good people give goodness to others and expect goodness (or at least no harm) in return.
Food for thought: if these people were devoted Christians convinced Rosemary would bear a Christ child, they would have behaved no differently.

@@amasion2882 very true but disagree with your last part. These Satanists were deceptive and treacherous and depended on hiding in plain sight to conceal their secrets. Vs if Christians had a similar agenda, though I wouldnt see the reason, it would most likely be open and not concealer. They would not use deception lying harm. But those tactics have always been used by evil forces. Its always disconcerting though when evil masquerades as good and is so convincing

    • @amasion2882

dawn ella27 : Respectfully, there are self-identified “good Christian” people who have done pretty terrible things. When people have an agenda-especially if it’s something they feel passionate about-they sometimes stoop to maladjusted or even criminal behaviors. I’m certain that there are “good Christian” women who have been befriended and emotionally pressured by their spouses and communities to do things they may not have wanted to do.
If a Christian community believed a particular woman could be “bred” to produce an angelic or messiah child, the community would certainly put effort into assuring that the “breeding” occurred and that the mother was “protected” (isolated) from potential “enemies” or “outsiders” (anyone not fitting into the agenda.)

The most brilliant part of the movie is with just 15 minutes to end, you don't really know how it is going to end and start entertaining the possibility that maybe Rosemary has turned insane and maybe she's just hallucinating. However moments later, the horror that it is actually real dawns on you. That is why the film is true horror, not because of random ghosts popping up, but because everyone that Rosemary confides in, is either in on the plan, or will believe she is insane and she is just all alone, in a big city with no one to help

My mother took us to see this movie when it was first released - we were young teens!! She didn’t have a clue what it was about - I think she expected a musical or something. We didn’t leave though, because it was so fascinating. No blood or gore or twisting heads. Just a young girl from Nebraska who goes to the big city, and finds herself in the middle of a satanic plot. And Ruth Gordon was integral to its success - an old nosy neighbor who is seemingly harmless and warm-hearted, but turns out to be a coven witch.

i think one of the biggest horrors of the movie was just how often Rosemary could have avoided being in contact with the Castevets but didn't because of being polite and adhering to social norms. like, this old bat is super fucking nosy and Rosemary could have turned her down at any point, but she didn't because of the social norms she had to adhere to. idk i think way too much lol

I have an alternate interpretation of the ending. Rosemary's choice to raise her son despite knowing his Satanic origin is her last attempt at reclaiming her identity. She sees herself in her child. To kill it would be to murder the last remnant of her humanity. Truly terrifying.

    • @ChamiKhan13
      @ChamiKhan13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

i'm gonna build on this and say that she was not only reclaiming what is hers, but idk if this is just me or not, but i think she takes Castevet's words to heart: the whole thing he has about how they're going to use this baby to get revenge on everyone who wronged them, i think that Rosemary agrees, and that this is her way of getting back. she's not doing this for them- she's doing this for herself and for her child, and she's going to wreak havoc

That's what I got too. Demanding that she be the one to rock the baby was by far the most directly she had stood up for herself at any time during the movie. If we combine it with the analysis in this review it might even answer the central question of the movie. If the movie is a metaphor about how women were treated in society then why do they still play along even though their lives are based on the exploitations of others? Because no matter what their maternal instincts will overpower all, even if those instincts are directed towards the literal anti-Christ.

This is my favorite horror movie of all time. I think this had an effect on my world that was very unexpected. I realized that sometimes everyone lies to you and that yes, several people can gather together to cover-up something hideous just for their own benefit. I wonder if I would question the truth if it wasn't for this movie. Rosemary seemed innocent, yet intelligent. She trusted those that should have taken care of her, like her husband, a doctor and a "motherly" neighbor. I could relate to in regards to her dislike of her neighbors and it angered me that her husband kept pulling her towards them, so disrespectful of her wishes. Of course, his actions over and over again showed his disrespect for her but one just assumed he loved her. As the movie goes on and the sides are drawn one realizes that the evil prospers regardless of the good trying to interfere. The world is covered in dark and pretending to be light. That is what makes this movie very frightening.

Thank you for this video! I just finished reading the book and though it is SO good, I struggled through it, as I used to be a victim of extreme emotional and verbal abuse at the mercy of my controlling and manipulative ez husband. The horror in this story is not satanism, but rather what human beings will subject another unwilling person to for their own benefit. The realism is all too poignant in this story, which is what makes is so fascinating yet repulsive at the same time.

Rosemary is lovely. She is the kind of woman who men would slay dragons to protect. Her childhood was mid-western and God fearing. It is reflected in her innocence and femininity which is what makes the movie work so well. You want to protect her because you intuitively know that what she represents is the essence of life and a worthy civilization. The betrayal is so awful because she is a thing of beauty and grace.
That being said, her own greed and pressure on Guy to take that apartment put them in the orbit of witches. Her desire of a worldly, fashionable life (and a shallow actor husband) caused her to put her own faith to the side so she could enjoy the sophisticated pleasures of NY. She is confronted with her own betrayal when Roman starts criticizing the Pope which makes her very uncomfortable but she has already chosen sides in her soul. She is ripe for the picking - as was Sharon Tate.
