Always loved James Arness in everything he did. I am grateful that he was part of John Wayne's "stock company." Thank you Duke for "introducing" him to Gunsmoke and history.
I LOVED the movie, then the TV show too. James Arness was GREAT!! The whole show and cast was excellent, I've watched it more then once. I'm currently reading the paperback by Lou Cameron for the 1st time. Thanks Rob! Enjoy your Sunday!
Rob Word this was so interesting about the what and the who's who behind such an epic series. It's a virtual roster of the greatest legends of Hollywood. The politics were intense to say the least. As for Bruce Boxleitner, man that was a close call. The stars were shining on him, that's for sure. At any one of those steps along the way and we might not have ever known him. So glad it worked out for him, he's one of my favorite actors. Can't wait for part two. Great job Rob!
Thanks, Wayne. You won't be disappointed. Even Bruce's ex-wife, Kitty Holcomb, was there and has some nice comments. She played his SISTER in the series.
Dam that’s right up with Lonesome Dove movies 4 I think. Zeb Mc Cahain was the greatest along with Bruce Boxlightner. I really loved the Aunt. What a great show you did today Rob. 🇺🇸. Now that I think about it I will never forget ether of them. I would love to get my hands on the complete set of both. Especially How the West was Won. Can’t wait for part two.
This How The West Was Won was my favorite James Arness movie!!!👏👏👏💜👏👏👏🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆thanks a million Rob!!! You are one of the TOP TH-cam shows!!!💪🏻💪🏻 Loved Bruce B in this film also!!! Awesome acting everyone!!!!!!!
I'm from Sweden and How the West was won was my favourite tv-show as a kid. And I had my first crush on Bruce Boxleitner, lol. But the cool one was always James Arness, alias "Uncle Zeb" I saw it again a couple of years ago and still thinks he is in his own league
Oh wow, really enjoyed this . It’s wonderful to know what goes behind the scenes n just how they pick the actors to play their parts. I definitely don’t want to miss part 2. Always like Bruce n loved James Arness. ♥️♥️😊👍
This was absolutely terrific! Engaging and interesting speaker with a wonderful insight into the behind the scenes machinations. So many times the "suits" never get it right. Kudos to a man of integrity who stood by his guns while others bailed. Another great show that was unfortunately an hour and 15 minutes too short. Looking forward to part two!
I always smile when I see Al's name in the credits. Al's wife and I know each other. We both grew up in the same town in Missouri. Wanda was 2 years ahead of me in school. They come back here from time to time. They own the old Oakhill Manor property.
I always wondered how that all came about. Loved the series as a matter of fact it ran on tv not long ago and i watched it again. When it comes on again i will watch it again! It is that good!
No question that Richard Hatch nailed the part of Dean Berry in "Deadman's Curve", but in a much bigger way Bruce Boxleitner was the right pick for "How The West Was Won".
That is so true, here in retrospect. Bruce felt he wasn’t experienced enough as a film actor at the time. The pilot was the right time/right place, though, and a leg-up to a fine, long career for Bruce, truly one of the good guys.
How the west was won was the main reason I brought a color TV. The opening paintings by Charles Russel were so awesome, wow. Two great black & White movie I would loved to be in color is “ The BigSky “ and “The Great Meadow”! H T W W W was a very good series. I really appreciate seeing it back on for a while.
I not such a great memory of the movie. When I was in the 5th grade and we were studying about the exploration of the West, my class went on a build trip to Grauman's Chinese theater. It was incredible!!!
The joys of the behind the scene maneuvering, power plays, and competing agenda's are being laid bare. When the project turns out successful, all sorts of people happily claim credit. The few in many cases who actually fought for a position are quickly lost in herd of bystanders who claim they were always in favor of the way the finished product was developed. If it fails the same bystanders point fingers at the few, and blame them, claiming they knew along the wrong actions were being taken and spoke out ( in loud silent voices) against them. It is the nature of the industry.
Another great job, Rob! It's interesting to see how the behind the scenes power struggles can occur. I think Bruce Boxleitner was the right choice but Richard Hatch is a good actor as well. Even better is that both guys are truly upstanding men. Met both at pop culture cons and have always enjoyed interacting with them. Richard Hatch was a regular fixture at Dragon Con for years, showing up several days early just to hang with fans. One of his regular things was to engage in thumb wrestling with a group cosplaying as the Crazy 88s (Kill Bill), who took over a local eatery one night every year during the con. Knew Hatch from Battlestar Galactica and Boxleitner from Babylon 5 and Bring Them Back Alive (also Scarecrow and Mrs. King as my mom loved that show). Looking forward to part two next week!
I love love Richard Hatch.....but Bruce was right for the part. How the west was won is the series that made me a fan of Jim Arness. Festus was my favorite on Gunsmoke.
I'm a big fan of the movie, but never seen the tv show. Merian C Cooper was great!!! You're channel has helped inspire me to fill my gaps during lockdown. I'm putting together a list of all my favourite Westerns in chronological order starting with The Great Train Robbery (1903), list runs at about 300 films so far.
@@AWordonWesterns There will be one glaring omission though... the singing cowboy westerns. I've only seen a couple, one Tex Ritter and one Gene Autry but they don't do it for me. I will give Roy Rogers a go at some point.
Either or both would be terrific, larry. I'll try and book them once production resumes. I've got an interview coming up with Belinda Montgomery who had lunch with Peter Duel the day he killed himself.
@@AWordonWesterns Thank you so much my friend for your response. Pete was an idol of mine from that show when I was a young man. I was in high school when he passed, so it was a shock for me. Pete reminded me a lot of my oldest brother who I also idolized.
You picked a good one, MT. TOMAHAWK was directed by George Sherman, who mostly helmed B or B+ product; including lots of westerns in the 1950 and 60s. This is one of his best. Beautifully shot in color with Van Heflin doing a commendable job as scout Jim Bridger. Not too factual but good action and nice sensitivity for the Sioux. Sherman later is credited for one of John Wayne's best, BIG JAKE, but I think it was mostly helmed by Duke.
I am trying to hear about how the West was won and I cannot see none of the pictures because the closed captioning for the words is all over the screen on the video and I cannot see it I can hear it but I cannot see what in the world the pictures who they look like or anything
That was interesting on the casting of Boxleitner. I admit, I'm more of a fan of Richard Hatch and probably would have watched the series were he in it. I admit I only saw this series in the last year and wasn't that impressed. Hatch might have made a difference for me, but the show did okay without me. lol It is kinda fun to know how ABC was fighting for Hatch, but my understanding from his days on SOSF is that he had some growing up to do, which I believe he did as he matured. It's just that after those difficult SOSF days, it is nice to know the network, for whatever reason, was still behind him. Maybe it was all contractual. :} oh, and by the way, the title confused me because I LOVED the movie and because of the title, I thought it would be connected. It confused me and I didn't like that, so in retrospect, I think they should have used the alternate The McCahans name as the title and left How the West Was Won out of it.
Loved James Arness. He was great in ‘Big Jim McClain’ and Hondo, as well. Thanks RW
Always loved James Arness in everything he did. I am grateful that he was part of John Wayne's "stock company." Thank you Duke for "introducing" him to Gunsmoke and history.
A great 👍 show and great 👍 actors also in Gunsmoke.
Amen!
I continued to love James Arness. Enjoyed him being an old scoundrel in How the West Was Won. One of my favorites.
Very entertaining Mr Word. I can't wait for part 2. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it. See you Sunday!!
Watching this right now on Get TV...love Arness and the whole cast!

Can’t thank you enough for this channel..
Our pleasure, Bill. Thanks.
James Arness was fantastic in this movie and I can't imagine anyone else playing Luke. I thought all of the actors did outstanding jobs.

Audie Murphy, that’s funny. Great video, Rob. Thank you very much.

I Love Rob Words,,,, A Word on Westerns,,,
Thanks, Big. I was just watching this back story on TV's HOW THE WEST WAS WON again and spotted your comment. Thanks, pal.
Wonderful! Every episode takes me back to being a kid and watching westerns dressed as either an indian or with my set of cap gun six shooters on.
I wouldn't joke about Audie Murphy.
Absolutely loved that series.
And John Ford produced Merian C. Cooper's MIGHTY JOE YOUNG with newcomer Ben Johnson.
Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr. are two of my favourite actors. In westerns it is a special treat when they get to show their excellent horsemanship.
Thank you for this great video, beautiful story🤠.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks.
❤ JKA was a great Actor and get's his feets allways on the ground 👍❣️I Love and miss him 💋💯❣️
Loved it
I liked both characters. Short one syllable names.
Thank you
You're welcome
I remember the stories about Mr. Arness' later years of Gunsmoke. If it wasn't a "long shot," he was in sneakers.
"If you can see my feet, it's not me," said big Jim.
That was my favorite séries at thé time.i had a strong taste of freedom.i was teenager. Cow boy IS a free boy.the west a free Land.
Do not forget James Stacy. 😄
I love love Richard Hatch.....but Bruce was right for the part. How the west was won is the series that made me a fan of Jim Arness. Festus was my favorite on Gunsmoke.

Always thought Uncle Zeb was James Arness's best character
I saw Newly in the video.
Good eye, dog.
Have you guys ever did Alias Smith And Jones. I'm sure Ben Murphy or even Roger Davis wouldn't mind being a guest,

What was Zeb's rifle; a Trapdoor Spingfield or a Sharps?
I love this. I am watching a movie called Tomahawk with Van Heflin. They are using real Indians. Any cool info on that would be great.

Try turning your Closed Captioning off, Kay.
It's simple after gunsmoke he needed work so get it were u can I guess..i liked his matt dillion character the best
🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
what ever happened to Jesse??

Did a double take. Not the Jim Byrnes I expected
30 yrs & some make-up !
the innocent guy usually winds up dead at the end of mo0st episodes of gunsmoke. its getting tiresome and sick of it
Sorry , I thought the tv version sucked
It did not appeal to me also.
