Originally released in October 1949, and directed by Bill Tytla. The moon's remark, coughing and moaning "I'm not long for this world!", is a reference to the catchphrase Peter Donald often delivered as "Ajax Cassidy" {in "Allen's Alley"} on Fred Allen's radio show...the little girl bears more than a slight resemblance to "Little Audrey" because the animators were also working on her "Noveltoons" at the same time (especially Steve Muffati, who also drew Audrey's comic book stories at the time).
I love how selfless Molly is, I mean she actually gave back the pot of gold even though it technically was hers to keep. Patty is really selfless too, letting himself get caught on purpose (heck, even tricking Molly into catching him) just so that Molly and her mom would be able to pay their mortgage. They didn't even need the entire pot, just ten pieces, but Patty joyfully brought out the entire pot anyway. ^^ I can see Molly and Patty becoming best friends just because of their kind and selfless hearts. :)
same!! i had a vhs with all these cartoons on and i've been trying to remember them for ages ... maybe we had the same video? i remember something about puppies around a christmas tree too ...
Nice to see the writers knew some things about Irish folklore. It happens in a hundred stories - the gold turns into leaves, rocks, ginger cakes or horse dung, but bees - that's a new one to me.
Very curious cartoon. It's exceptionally long (most cartoons wree 8 minutes or less) - the girl looks like Little Audrey, the mother looks like Saint Mary! - The two gags where the fireflies become the full moon and the coins change into bees were really imaginative! Famous Studios occasionally came up with a good one and this was one of them.
i remember watching the other cartoon that featured these leprechauns ("the wee men"), but i've never seen this cartoon before. also, molly looks like she was based on little audrey.
It is really sad that there is a bitter conflict between Ireland and England. I just wish there would be peace. Thankfully my videos here on TH-cam dealing with this topic might help to facilitate peace and harmony between these two great nations.
@jbrooksby No the Leprechaun wasn't stealing from the poor family. In old Ireland, there was a tradition of leaving treats such as milk, cream, or small snacks outside the front door for the Little People (brownies, leprechauns, other faeries,etc.). This tradition was to bring fortune to the household and make peace with the faerie folk.
Bill Tytla was an animator at Walt Disney's studio. He animated Grumpy in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Stromboli in Pinocchio, Chernabog in the Night on Bald Mountain sequence from Fantasia and the title character in Dumbo. He animated the scene in Snow White is where woman-hating Grumpy is kissed by Snow White. As he brusquely walks away, an internal warmth generated by the kiss gradually slows him, bringing a soft smile and sigh to his lips, revealing his true feelings of love. Grumpy's inner feelings are portrayed solely through pantomime-in his telling facial expressions, his body language, and the timing of his reactions.
I keep wondering where, even in the legend that, Leprechauns got their gold. I mean ... there's never been any gold mining in Ireland. I don't believe any geologists ever found gold there.
I used to watch this on the local UHF channel back in the 70s-- Still remember the ending, and the look of the villain. (Did Harvey do another cartoon featuring Paddy the Leprechaun? Or am I mis-remembering?)
This was on a Daffy Duck VHS tape and this one wasn't as long as the other three, it was about 90 seconds long before cutting to black after the new guy had a puff and his beard caught fire. ah if i can find it again.
thank you so much for uploading a childhood favorite of mine! I was wondering, does anyone know where I can find the one where it's the young leprechaun's birthday and he's like,"that I am, that I AM!" and the money hungry guy squeezes the eagle off of a coin? Any direction is greatly appreciated! God Bless!
Daniel&LeAnn Smith I remember that one! Along with a song "we make shoes for the poor" and the menacing " lead me to your crock of gold". How old was the birthday boy becoming a man: 125?
Daniel&LeAnn Smith omg 😮 I would watch that cartoon all the time. I remember every little detail that u just so perfectly described 👌🏼 oh how great were the cartoons when I was a child
i used to love this as a child, this and a cartoon about a nutcracker who comes to life and him and a girl ride in a swan, but i cant for the life of me remember it!! if you tell me what its called and where to get it i will love you forever!!!
Yes Jeremy, this cartoon is on a DVD called "Noveltoons Original Classics." Look for it on Amazon. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006YTL3W0?ie=UTF8&seller=AKK5M0EM2CKQI&sn=thunderbean
that's little Audrey I don't like her anymore I like butterbear from the wuzzles better because of the nwo wolfpack coming out to the wrong music after they were formed
Awesome! I had this on VHS when I was little and have been looking for it forever.

That evil landlord looks like Count Dracula with his sharp teeth.
Happy St. Patrick's Day, 2011!

Bill Tytla was the designer of Little Audrey, which explains things. :)
i remember watching the other cartoon that featured these leprechauns ("the wee men"), but i've never seen this cartoon before.

THE LUCK O' THE IRISH!!!!

8:29 to 8:56 is my favorite part of this short

Daniel&LeAnn Smith I remember that one! Along with a song "we make shoes for the poor" and the menacing " lead me to your crock of gold". How old was the birthday boy becoming a man: 125?

HUZZAH!!!!
Yikes, For years we have ben attempting to decode what she says t 6:12
any suggestions would be much appreciated
???
She says "Get down with you and your Blarney" (In other words, she doesn't believe he's a leprechaun)
Does this have to do with the horror movie?
No, the tax collector is the villain, not the leprechauns.
probably because paddy is so similar to dopey XD
I'm just watching this to see who was the leprechaun
@luvme7754 pretty sure myself and the sisters watched same vhs, probably ti; we broke it :)
Those wee folk certainly don't look leprachauns. They're not wearing green.
This is rather long for a theatrical cartoon. Most cartoons don't last more than seven minutes.
KISS ME, I'M IRISH!!!!
@jbrooksby no, what would give you tht idea? when you leave money out for the milk-man, and he takes it, that is theft too is it?
Kiss your hand 3xpost this on another video and look under your pillow for a pink iPhone

You mean Little Audrey's ancestor in Ireland.
