    scaling up the production of EVs is one thing that drives down the cost. but the real driver is innovation that makes the product cheaper and better.
    i always make this comparison to illustrate that progress of 10years EV development comparing the id.7 with the first tesla model s:
    * half the price (adjusted for inflation)
    * double the range
    * tripple the charging speed

    Adding to your points above for the SU7, it is the most aerodynamic production EV on sale with a Cd value of 0.195, however without the lidar unit. But for 30 grand USD, a car that reminds you of the McLaren from the front, the Taycan from the side, and the Kia Stinger from the rear, it is stupendously good value. More impressive is the fact that they had designers from BMW and Mercedes who were responsible for the iX and the i7, the same guy was the chief designer of the SU7. The man from Mercedes was roped in to design its looks, the same man did the EQXX. Quite a team for a first car.

      But that area has the density to do it. The majority of the U.S. is 10-15 years away from EVs being common. There appears to be no interest in installing local charging and 60% of potential buyers can't charge at home, work, or while out running errands. So even as we get a decent selection of used EVs people will still need to buy ICE here.

    • @rp9674

      @davidmccarthy6061 true. More so perception than reality, trying is believing. Starting with figuring a charging routine is a good start, could be just charging at home. Easier to go EV in a 2 car fam. Every house & apt. has electricity, 240v is ideal, but 120v + some public charging can work. Some rural can charge only at home do a 180mi commute & save $$$.

      @@davidmccarthy6061I don't think people understand how fast this can change. Plus, it doesn't really matter where in a country, or even the world, the sales are taking place. As long as EV manufacturers can sell all the cars they produce they don't care too much. They will continue ramping production, improving the technology, bringing down price, installing more chargers, etc making an EV the obvious choice for more and more people in more and more areas. It actually makes it easier to fully electrify a few areas and then spread, as this makes for a much better experience for those in the areas with lots of chargers, vs spreading the same number of chargers evenly around the country and making it take a long time before there's a decent amount in any given area.

    Tesla is not exclusively a car company and was never intended to be exclusively a car company. Their many businesses in energy arbitration, energy storage, and energy generation all align with their stated goal of accelerating the energy transition. And while profits from automotive sales are currently funding the company, their intention to have an automated transportation fleet along with their insurance arm shows that they are intentionally moving beyond supplying just the transportation hardware.
    Even other automobile companies are shifting to the energy service model. Specifically, GM is starting an energy storage subsidiary just like Tesla. Even historically, it should be noted that GM was primarily a finance company with GMAC where the majority of their profits came from automotive financing. Sticking with GM, GM bought the IT services company EDS in 1984 and then spun it off as an independent company in 1996.
    There is currently a growing overlap between battery companies, energy companies, and phone companies in China and the US. So the idea that Tesla may be moving to be an energy company is not unexpected.

    Generally I’ve found it is more expensive than just using the Tesla prices, unless you have a Polestar Charge subscription - in which case it’s 30% off the standard Polestar Charge prices.

      The problem is not range anxiety, but range anxiety anxiety. People who drive EVs and have the ability to use Tesla Superchargers quickly learn that range is not an issue. The real problem in the US is most people have no clue how far they actually drive every day. They all think they drive 200-300 miles a day when really the average is more like 30-40mile a day. They also think its -40 everywhere and they need to tow trailers. The other issue is the media tells people EV can only do 50 miles, there is no where to charge and you need to replace the battery every year and it will cost $60,000

    We are at the stage where EVs are becomming mainstream, and thus are starting to acquire economies of scale, like charging infrastructure, and many models allowing you to find vehicles that match your needs more perfectly. At some point, ICE will begin to lose it's economies of scale. They no longer have the undevided attention of auto development and sales, but they still have most of it. We will see it first in Norway, as the percentage of ICE vehicles on the road thins out, so will the fueling infrastructure. There will come a day when you won't want to buy a new ICE vehicle, because it hasn't been updated in 10 years, is expensive, the fuel is hard to find and expensive. By that time, chargers will be everywhere, and Tesla or somebody else will have a vehicle that does what you want. If they can make a class 8 semi that can go 500 miles, they can build something smaller, and frankly, the Silverado can do a lot right now.

      One big reason they are not here is huge tariffs. If you bring low cost Chinese cars here, even with US standards for safety, it will seriously impact US car manufacturers. We don’t want to kill that industry and have China own USA. Please raise tariffs on vehicles from China.

    • @bobwallace9753
      @bobwallace9753 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The problem is tariffs. Apparently Chinese EVs would need to be slightly improved to meet US safety standards but they are meeting EU standards.
      What I'm watching for is one of the US legacy manufacturers (GM or Ford) decide that the only way their brand can survive is to import rebadged Chinese EVs. That would lead them to seek lower tariffs.
      The other route is for one or more Chinese EV manufacturers to open a final assembly plant in the US or Mexico in order to skirt US tariffs.
      BYD already has a battery powered bus and truck factory in the US. Greely/Volvo has an EV factory in the US. BYD seems to be working toward an EV factory in Mexico.
      Apparently labor costs in Mexico are now lower than costs in China. China has a shrinking labor pool due to their one child policy and aging population. By manufacturing in Mexico Chinese companies could save on labor costs, on shipping costs, and avoid US tariffs.

      @@jamesengland7461 We want to buy & install our own charger, but management won't allow it or price to get power to designated parking spot is cost prohibitive. I got around that problem but locating charger in a common area and installing a commercial unit that handles multiple accounts & direct billing to user.

      I think a large problem is the availability of acceptable EVs. Outside of Tesla options are pretty bleak. Legacy companies like GM and Ford poo-pooed EVs for years and have yet to get really serious about producing EVs that the market wants. At the same time we've put up barriers against Chinese EVs.
      Access to rapid chargers has been a problem. But legacy caused that problem. Tesla offered, years ago, to let other brands of EVs use their Superchargers if the company would help with the cost of installing the chargers.

    Martyn, it's sad to see a UK citizen so deeply into promoting the China made products by the Chinese government and employee Chinese people. With 1.3+ billion, their citizens can support their LOCAL brands. It's beginning to look like you are paid by these brands or somehow influenced to your daily promotion of them. You have a family, and they will NOT want to be owned by the China government.😢

      You typed that message on a device which had nothing to do with China, naturally. Right?

      This is a news channel. China is making news. To be impressed by Chinese evs is to be warned to step up your competitive game in order to beat them.

      @jamesengland7461 You must be Chinese or have money in Chinese products. No, the rest of the world does NOT want a mass takeover of made in China products. What happens if the S hits the fan. You will be screwed.

      Let's face facts. A very large number of Chinese companies took EVs seriously years ago and have developed good quality EVs at very good prices. European and US manufacturers stuck their heads in the sand/oil pan and refused to take EVs seriously.
      This mirrors the "Japanese car invasion" of the 1970s when Japan began exporting good quality, efficient, low priced cars into the US market but Detroit ignored what was happening. Detroit gave massive amounts of the market to Japanese manufacturers out of stupidity. And now they are repeating that sort of foolishness with EVs.

      @@bobwallace9753 exactly. Do I want China to dominate? No! But what I really want is my country to put in the real effort to become competitive and win on our own merits

    Why are EVs so awesome but Formula E so sh*te compared to F1?
