Thank you so much 🌱🙏🏾
Too much nitrogen causes too much green leaves you want potassium to get the blooms I also add epsom salt when they are growing. Calcium keeps the watermelon from getting black spot and rotting. Also slow down on the watering a few weeks before you harvest it helps with sugar build up instead of getting a bland melon full of water. This also goes for strawberries let the dirt dry a week or two before picking.
Awesome..thank you so much for sharing this with us ... 🌱
great post ! you use regular Epsom salt from the store? whats the ratio to water? also, where do you buy the calcium ? Thanks for your help.
I really appreciate that you got straight to the point and didn’t waste my time with rambling like some channels I’ve watched. Great tips! Ty!

I’m growing two small varieties for my first year growing watermelon. 1 sugar baby and 1 petite yellow. I got a early start on the season…started indoors 3 weeks early..transplanted in May. They picked up pretty good in June and I actually ended up getting two flowers pollinated, they grew for a bit…rat ate one…the other ended up splitting at about baseball size. I didn’t give up though…fertilized the plants and in July they grew like crazy, more then they ever have and now I have 4 that successfully pollinated and are getting closer to full size. I’ve been watering basically everyday a little and it seems like they aren’t splitting which is something I am worried about. Here in the PNW we don’t have the longest season but I’m think these 4 will be able to finish by October hopefully.
What to do is add straw mulch on the bottom that would observe some of the moisture, sometimes in watermelon there is too much water and it's so hot. This could cause the splitting person in the watermelon.. Try the water a tad less and pruning will help alot🙏🏾🌱
I am new subscriber to your channel. Great information. Happy gardening.

Great video! This will be my second year to grow watermelon and I'd really like to get more this time. How many melons do you usually try to keep on each plant/vine? I've seen other sources suggest just (1) or (2) max per vine.
So one watermelon plant will give you about 3-4 Mellons .. the key to get the max is to keep the plant healthy, once you see a sign of a watermelon , add fertilizer and keep adding fertilizer every 1-2 weeks .. also water is very important , stick to a water and schedule , water enough... Do a light prune at the beginning of the plant , keep the root area clean , get good air flow ..
Thank you sir!!

Intetesting..I often wonder how they manage fields of watermelon.I actually live in Southern Indiana.I grew up where my dad's farm was next to fields of pumpkin and watermelon.I.just never paid attention ..My dad also grew fields of tomatoes back when our little town had canning factory. He got top yield award once.I don't know how he managed.i.have 12 and they keep me busy!
.
Oh I totally understand you there. I have a small garden here and it feels like never ending work lol and if I miss even 2 days I feel like I lose control fully.🙏🏾🌱
I transplanted my watermelon to a bigger pot and it has side shoots galore! No fruit but leaves a plenty. Thanks for the tips.
You're welcome 🙏🏾🌱🍉
Too much nitrogen you need potassium too get the blooms
@@denisemiller8474 bone meal correct? Blood meal is a nitro boaster but its primarily for leaf development.
@@aliceboyblue I was incorrect potassium is for root growth. Phosphorus is for root and bloom. Urea and or nitrogen ( blood meal) is for green leaves. I add phosphorus when I start seeing vines on my melons. But be carful not too add to much. I use phosphorus about every Six weeks too keep it blooming and for health. Calcium helps with bottom end rot so I add that a few times a summer while they are growing. Then stop watering a week or so before harvest. Watering too much at the end of the cycle makes the sugars sweeter in the melon. Only water if the plant is wilting. I also prune the shoots when I see one or two on the plant. Tip and cut off shoots . Baby watermelon can have a few more watermelons on the vine . You want the energy too go into one or two bigger varieties instead of growing a lot on one vine .
great video! what do you use for calcium?
Thank you. This is what I used to give it a boost of calcium.. It lasts for a long time

Your thoughts on soda (Bulldog). I've been told no it'll affect the taste. I've been told yes, haha. The fertilizer I've been using is regular 10-10-10... I haven't pruned from lack of confidence. I'm on coastal SC and from 3-6pm it's extremely humid hot. More this year.... I built racks over the plants and I lay cloth over them.
So 10-10-10 fertilizer is good for summer plants , for fall I would use a 12-12-12..
Soda (bulldog) is good for summer vegetables.. and that's a great idea with the cloth ! 🌱🙏🏾
@@Greentgarden thank you!
Welcome
I would really love to try this as I don't believe you, i have to find out for myself i guess... my reasoning is "more leaves = more surface area for photosynthesis to occur = more energy to the plant" But i will try this method nonetheless, i figured i'm going to try 3 without pruning and 3 with

I live in Michigan and also use the heavy-duty fabric to keep the weeds down. In the middle of the day the fabric gets so hot it'll burn my feet if I'm barefoot. Do you have any problems with the hot fabric on the plants?
Oh don't think it's that hot over here.. It's only in the high 70s and mid-80s right now..
New subcriber here! Glad i found your chaneel. What fertilizer do you use for your watermelons?
Thank you 🙏🏾🌱...

have 3 plants in one mound.Should I cut 1 off or all but one. Thanks
Well, you should definitely space your plants out at least 2-3 ft apartment.. And definitely prune off some side shoot discipline to grow. We move at least one to 2 feet
What is it that is covering the ground I'd love to try that
These landscapes are in fabric..

Thankyous for your videos. So I was told that it take a really long time for coffee grounds to break down. What do you say?
Without watering the used coffee ground, yes, it does take a while , but as you water two three times a week, it breaks it down faster .. and thank you...🙏🏾🌱
good video on watermelon , how do you tell when they are really ripe ? when you buy them at the store if your lucky you might fin one with a yellow spot ,the rest are all green . they say it's ripe if there's a yellow spot which is hardly yellow , also knock on it if it sounds hollow and has that little brown spot from the vine it's ripe. all three of these together is supposed to mean it's ripe. and they say they ship them all green because they don't want them to ripen before the get to the store . we know there not going to ripen after their picked. yet they seem to sell a lot of green ones, so ho do you really pick a ripe one? the fruit markets are the same. i live in up state ny.
Thank you ! So I go with the same thing. Those same three tips , That's how I tell..
Make sure the tendril is brown, watermelon looks fully growing. I also look at the color make sure it's not dark green. It's a little bit lighter green , an old school knocking sound if it's hollow.. coming up soon. We'll put it a test again. So far in the past I did pretty good. Keeping my finger crossed lol
thanks that's what we do.
🙏🏾🌱
Do you know the effects of gibberellin supplements on watermelons? I have it for my grape plants, however I’m curious if it would also improve melon growth
It should help , but just don't add too much
What kind of fertilizer do you use? I’ve been using plant tone.
You could use bone meal or organic garden tone ..

Wow that is awesome!! We get the box turtle that comes in the backyard sometime.. the kids love it 🙏🏾🌱💚
Hello so u say to use grass clippings, where do I put them? Around the base of stem and water it in?
You could put fresh grass clipping on the base of the stem, 2-3 inches layer .. where you normally water.. This will increase the nitrogen fertilizer and help keep it moist ..
@@Greentgarden thank you for responding I love your channel ❤️
Welcome and thank you 🌱

I planted a watermelon plant for the first time this year. I’m getting lots of vines, lots of male flowers, and then the female fruit just turns black. Haven’t had any melons at all so far. I will have to try your suggestions. Thank you.
So sorry to hear that , sometimes if the watermelon hasn't been pollinated it will turn black rotten fall off.. Yes definitely try pruning your watermelon like how I did this will help a lot .. Also increase your fertilizer and make sure to water enough..🌱🙏🏾
@@Greentgarden Right after I watched your video, I did what you suggested, and I found my first watermelon growing yesterday!! I’m so excited. Thank you for the tips!
What's the best organic method to supply calcium to the plant and how often should it be added? Great video, btw. 👏🏽
The most natural calcium would be eggshells, but it takes too long to decompose ..( You have to blend it and then add it but it still take to break down)
I use the organic garden lime works well ..
I use this once a month.. or if I have any blossom end rot problem.. It's good to add fertilizer every 2 weeks to most plants like pumpkin, squash, zucchini, tomatoes peppers
Turn eggshells into liquid calcium by drying them in oven, the putting into jar of vinegar. The acid in the vinegar reacts with the eggs, pulling out the calcium into the solution until all the vinegar acid is consumed, leaving just calcium rich solution which you can dilute and apply to plants. Many vids on YT about how to do this, works great.
@@Greentgarden Thanks a lot. 🙏🏽
@@jeffmeyers3837 Awesome! Thank you.
We have sweet melons growing and boy they're shooting like crazy . Can I prune them the same way from the base up
Nice ! And yes a light pruning helps a lot.. enjoy those sweet melons 🤤
@@Greentgarden thank you for getting back to me. And we are going to check out some more videos 😁
Your welcome and nice ! I appreciate it..

What kind of coffee grounds do you recommend for a fertility boost?
If you could get any organic coffee grounds will be good
How long does it take coffee to break down in order to provide nitrogen or any other benefit??
So if you add used coffee grounds to compost it could take I believe 2-3 months ..
But if you add to your soil and you keep watering your plants every 2-3 days it breaks down much faster..
What about bearing salts when i see small watermelon or flowers?
That's a good idea too.. do it when you see a small watermelon for sure..
@@Greentgarden thankyou bro!

I’ve read they can’t be grown indoors. Since it’s late august is it too late to grow them? I live near nyc.

@@Greentgarden Thank you a lot love your videos. Just one question, how much does it take for plants to break down and actually use the fertilezer, and how often should I add it?
Most fertilizer could break down within 24 to 48 hours after , When added fertilizer make sure to water right after to start the process ... I add fertilizer every 3 weeks.. bigger plants like pumpkin, squash, zucchini. I will fertilize even 2 weeks if I have to..
I found out growing trees and grass and plenty of water 💦😊
Nice 🌱🙏🏾
Can u please recommend a calcium source?

Do you have to hand pollinate watermelon plants?
You don't have to if you have a lot of bees ..
I did before, but I didn't had to because I have a lot of bees now ..thank God 🙏🏾🌱
IF you have a cat, used pine pellet kitty litter is loaded with nitrogens.
Obviously, remove and flush the poops first 😅
Lol awesome.. thanks for sharing this with us 🌱
I get bees late so I have too pollinate when the flowers first start.
Oh sorry.. and yes Pollinate in the morning so you don't lose the fruit...
Those are crimson sweet and jubilee watermelon...
@@Greentgarden I am growing crimson this year too. I grew last year and got over 40 lb watermelon each.. they were so good. I’m trying my hand at the yellow heart watermelon this year fingers crossed. And honeydew..
Wow nice ! That's a massive watermelon.. I'm a very nice variety now. Good luck and I know you got this.. Happy weekend gardening 🌱
I used 13-13-13 about a month ago and I saw growth, but 2 watermelons just rotted. Should I add more 13-13-13, or how about chicken manure?
Btw, this was an excellent video. Thank you.
So sorry to hear , once your watermelons are rotten it's two things. The number one is lack of calcium ,( If you already add for the fertilizer ) add some calcium ... And give it a couple days , number two watering.. make sure to stick to a water schedule , I normally water every 2 to 3 days but if it's close to 90° or above 90° high water 1 to 2 days..
@@Greentgarden thank you! I'll try it.
Welcome
What if my watermelon tendril broke off and im growing on a trellis so no ground spot should i just go by days?
It depends on the variety of the watermelon you're growing.. sugar baby watermelon takes about 75 to 85 days.. Jubilee watermelons take about 90 days .. Crimson Sweet watermelons take about 80 days..when it's ripe it will feel sturdy and have a resonant, hollow sound if you knock on it.. also if the green colors getting lighter too ..thats another sing for ripe
Thank you!! Have 4 sugar babies and 3 crimson sweet going. Only 2 are missing tendrils I'll be careful with the others, thank you for your reply!!
Oh that's awesome , you have a lot ! Your welcome..🙏🏾🌱 will do a quick short video tomorrow on harvest watermelon tips
Do you use uncooked coffee or cooked coffee grounds?

How soon is too soon to start pruning???
When the plant is about 8-10 inches I would say ..
@Greentgarden thanks for the quick reply, you've earned a new sub
Welcome and thank you so much 🙏🏾🌱
Put a mulch - straw or sugar cane mulch - over the melon vine and adventitious roots will develop to support the extended plant.
So, that black fabric pseudo-mulch is not doing you much of a favour.
Awesome thank you so much for sharing this... Love it 🌱
My watermelon isn’t running it’s growing but not running long.
Milan plants could run and reach up to 6 to 8 ft. Depends on the variety. Give it some time it will keep growing
@@Greentgarden ty I see this is where patience and diligence really come into play.
Your welcome.. you got this 🌱
But also feeding the plant too much Nitrogen will dilute the flavor of the fruit!
'Leaf burning' with watering during middle of hot, sunny day is a myth (the fact is, the burning is so miniscule that it's truly not worth mentioning) - Furthermore, what you said about water evaporation is the true reason to NOT water in daytime. You are correct, however, with watering in morning or evening. Only problem with 'evening watering' is that it promotes mold growth. Morning is best time for watering. The rising sun/temps will burn off sitting water, thus thwarting mold growth and promoting better, healthier growth.
Thank you for sharing with us 🌱
Thanks for the advice I water every morning first time grower ❤❤
Oh nice ! Best thing you could ever do is to grow your own vegetable 🙏🏾🌱 it's so much fun ... If you ever miss water in the morning you could always water in the evening too. Around 5 to 6:00..
Nitrogen promotes foliage, but then you prune the foliage off. This is confusing to me.
It gets confusing sometimes but I am a big fan of pruning, I've Prune a lot and I get great success from it...I believe the plant doesn't need all that leaves to give us a harvest.. My pruning technique has gotten me more harvest and faster.. but do whatever works the best for your garden.. 🙏🏾🌱 happy gardening
Thank you
