Good morning Mr. Phelps. This comment will self destruct in 5 seconds. Lucky it was an across the line cap that went open (with a current limiting resistor in series) and the tape deck still works. You fixed it quite nicely.
Thanks for posting the video! It was fun to watch you discover the miracle of tape recorders. You have much to learn, but that's the fun of it. I was screaming "Put a tape on it!" the whole time you were wondering why it was stopping right away, and "The Who" while you were looking for the name of the song. 🙂 43:50 in case nobody else brought it up yet: That capacitor should be a "Type X" or "Type X2". I've never seen a series-resistor on the X capacitor; you can leave it out and just connect the capacitor to the line inputs; they're made to do that. Type X is designed to fail open, there's also a type Y that's designed to be used between line and earth, and those fail short, so that your device remains grounded when it fails. The TEAC will probably work fine, you'll probably just have to fix the pinch roller mechanism; they all have the problem that the grease changes into gum, just like inside the Sony.
This was fun…..When it started to smoke I thought it was gonna be terminal, …but you got it fixed and Bam! ….I remember when Bread was on the radio. They were huge back in their day and had some great songs. From memory ‘The Best of Bread’ was loaded with their killer songs and was a hugely selling album when it came out. …This band was arguably before their time. ….as you say, really well crafted and well recorded songs.
I worked in maintenance for 29 years and used a zoom spout on everything!! Lol! We would fill them with different viscosities for various equipment. We had originally ordered them for sewing machines we had in the building. P.S. the smoke show was great! Thanks for the video Ronnie!
Nice machine Ronnie. It's good to find a mono machine that has the track select switch. I have a slightly older (hybrid tube amp, silicon rectifier) and much cheaper set that belonged to my dad that lacks the switch, so you essentially just waste two of the four tracks on each tape. The speed settings, as you've no doubt either discovered already or someone else has commented, are in inches/cm per second. Your machine there supports all three of the commonly used speeds for domestic machines. It works the same as SP/LP does on a VCR. The slower the speed, the more you fit on a tape but the lower the sound quality.
My dad's old TEAC had an 'idler arm', and when that went up, it hit a switch that told the take-up reel to stop. The Inst-Stop switch probably monitors the supply reel for movement, and if it doesn't see it move, then it shuts down the take-up reel. I really miss having that old Reel-to-Reel. It sounded amazing, and it had that "iconic" look to it.
I was sure it was a Rifa capacitor that blew, it usually is. Just search for Rifa madness to see what that's all about. That's something to check for whenever you open vitange stuff like this. If you find a Rifa cap across the line, then it needs to be replaced. You can't use a regular film cap in there. Hope you replace it with a X2 cap. The resistor is not needed.
The way I understand the design of the snubber capacitor is that the 120 ohm resistor will open up when the capacitor becomes leaky or shorts (as yours did). Thus the resistor will open preventing all sorts of other nasty stuff from happening. All or most of the smoke you saw was the resistor.
I wanted to badly to tell you about the shut off tape sensing switch, but this was already recorded two days before. I had the stereo version of this a bit older with vacuum tubes, when I was in my teens, I'm now 62. I got it used and in a short time the head was just done. I found a 8-track head in my dad's shop and found a way to put it in and added some parts to make it work better with that head. Later I sold it with enough money for a down payment on a new reel-to-reel tape deck from Radio Shack ( TEAC inside). I still have that deck. I have a Sony deck with amps 2 track and a 4 track 4 channel deck. and a 3M unit with built in amp. I had a Grundig at on time for a while in my teen as well.
If you plan on fixing it up to use as a regular player, replace the Motor Capacitor. I have come across several decks from that era now and have it playing and then it would abruptly stop cause the Motor Cap. opened or shorted. If you don't get the power turned off quick enough, the motor will burn up. I have come across two decks where that had already happened. Good video.
The last machine brand pronounced as tea. Ack nice machine, take your time with that one I wish I had that

The tape player has three speeds 7.5 inches per second, 3 3/4 ips and 1 7/8ths ips. the 7.5 ips setting yields the best fidelity and the slowest speed is good for voice only recording. I would also recommend cleaning the tape head and other parts that the tape touches and de magnetizing the tape head does wonders for the audio quality. The Teac deck is top quality I had a Teac 6010GSL and it was a great deck. Unfortunately after using it 40+ years, it finally wore out.
Cool unit. Thanks for showing it to us. Get yourself a X or Y safety cap to replace the one that blew up. Or simply delete it. Don't leave the cap you've installed there, even though its 600v its not rated for line application, because there's a small, but real, risk it could short down the track.
My old "tube" sony r2r quit with a giant cloud of smoke. A huge resister fried and who knows what else, 😕. I made the mistake, (I knew better), of powering it up without using a variac after it had sat for decades. I really need to get it fixed. It made everything I ran through it sound better - not pristine - better. Rich harmonics and tape saturation. Most of the early 60's hits here in the usa were recorded to tube ampex machines. Love tape. Cheers.
If you use anything less then 99% alcohol it will be conductive and cause a short and blow up you can use less then 99% but you have to make sure it dry before you energize the circuit.
Safety caps still go out with a bang, but afterwards are open. I tend to run them even though they are mostly for fcc stuff, I still like to keep things as the designer intended. I've swapped a few old cracked rifas with brand new ones a few times. Apparently the new ones fixed the explosion issues.
".. should you, or any of your IM Force be caught or killed the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. Good luck, Jim. This tape will self-destruct in five seconds."
my dad had a sony reel to reel tape player when I was young. My dad recorded several reels of religious broadcasts (General Conference) from my church, the funniest one the tv station didn't erase the reel to reel video tape, they just recorded (General Conference) over a baseball game!
I think that's pretty cool, if you think about it, these tapes of music you can listen to on LP's or tapes or CD's, there's millions of recordings of the exact same song, and the session it was recorded in is the same. Something like a religious tape though, even if you don't agree with everything they're saying, it's ultimately somebody's unique thoughts, and there's only 1 recording of what they felt like saying. So it's more valuable in a way. One of a kind!
When I got my Sony TC-270 open reel for fifteen bucks back in 1988 it came with a bunch of tapes and one of them had "Jennifer Juniper" on it. I immediately recorded over it, never gave the rest of the tape a chance. What can I say, I was a kid. I keep some of those safety caps on hand just for when the forbidden capacitor incense comes out.
I have a Wollensak 1515 Stereo vacuum tube rtr which was much less dramatic. I could smell what seemed to be paraffin. I saw a wisp of smoke rise from the machine. I unplugged it immediately. The power transformer was hot to the touch but luckily not destroyed. A fuse would have been a very good idea. A Variac and Dim Bulb™tester is your friend.
30 mins in cap blew ! Lol I was a cassette tape guy only played with one small reel to reel (sony) as a kid, which I still have but wheel very shot Never knew about two tracks and bidirectional amazing 4 sets of recordings per tape
I've been bitten by the "If it's cool I've got to get it!" bug lately too. Having heard the mindbending awesomeness of Dolby S for myself last December, I seem to have accidentally bought three Dolby S cassette decks in the past month to refurb. All they've needed is a new capstan belt and a quick calibrate and I may end up keeping all three. I'm sure my wife would be horrified if she knew, but I divorced her 25 years ago so at least I don't have that to worry about!
Hope my Old Midland International stereo 8track player keeps going. Been using since summer of 2024. Paid 10 dollars at a flea market .works great, only cleaned head and rollers.
That cap you call a line cap may be the capacitor start for the motor I seen one big electrolytic cap that had a pencil eraser type bulge in it you got that thing wet with less then 99 and it shorted might be ok if you let it set and dry out I bet their wasn't anything wrong with that deck when you started
Next time could you please flap the lid on the reel to reel to make it look like the player is talking . You could give it a voice and persona you can be mr. Hands. That would be fun ! Thanks for posting!
RIFA caps were notorious for failing in vintage Apple computers from the 80's and 90's. The folks who restore vintage PC's normally replace RIFA caps before powering up the systems. Besides RIFA caps, old tantalum caps would also pop.

How many people like ME, who know how these work were screaming at the screen NO NO NO, you are doing it wrong!!! there is a CUT OFF switch on the left side of the tape guide path that MUST BE HELD BACK when you switch it out of stop for it to STAY RUNNING!! you had your fingers on it at the start of the video!!
You seem pretty amped up about it, did you notice that I figured it out eventually? I do a thing called "Learning", where I don't know something, and I eventually "learn" about it. I know you've never done it because YOU KNOW HOW THESE WORK, but some of us learn as we go. The reason I learn as I go, is because the people like you who "KNOW HOW THESE WORK" are horrible teachers with no social skills and no ability to communicate. Well, now I know how a switch works, the difference between the two of us now is I still have my character intact, you've exposed yours.
You had the volume down when it said " This tape will self destruct in 5 seconds."
...and the secretary (aka JOE) will disavow any knowledge of your actions. 👍
Winner comment.
I thought the same thing ! I was drinking tea at the time and also laughed so hard !!
Ditto, minus drinking tea.
i was just going to say remember , the secretary will disavow any of your actions.
Good morning Mr. Phelps. This comment will self destruct in 5 seconds. Lucky it was an across the line cap that went

Good idea to 'branch' out with the reel to reel decks.
THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!! Thanks Ronnie :) Thanks for inhaling all that stuff... you didn't have to do that... you probably shouldn't have 😃
You're welcome buddy

Yep, i am 52 and discovered Bread in my 20ties on vinyl. That's is some beautiful 70ties music!
Yelling at my phone like you could hear me "The Who" 😂. Great video

Holy crap Ronnie! That was a lotta smoke! Glad you’re ok though. Thanks for sharing. Regards
Great channel.
Glad you enjoy it!
Nice video, please use same size reels, that can sometimes upset tape tension on the take up side!
Love the smoke show. That’s the problem with old equipment, you never know when something going to go on it. Good work mate hope all is ok in the end.
That was quite a "mix reel". A lot of good music there.
Yes, A RIFA (or other brand) line filter. Notorious!! 🤣You can buy them with the resistor built in.

With old analog equipment its all about the awesome experience playing it .
Love the fact you can still laugh. Thanks for the video as usual, incidentally what is that song before the self destruct? Not one I'm familiar with.
It was playing at the wrong speed it’s a bread song
"Make it With You" by Bread.
I watch My Brother Donnie and was sitting here trying to figure out why your voice was so familiar!
Smoke on the tape deck. Holy moly 🤣😭🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴
Has to be the best rendition of "there's going to be a hot time in the old town tonight" I have ever heard.

There's a resistor, and the original wasn't a safety rated cap so I'm not concerned about that.
Alright, be honest. When the smoke came out...how fast did you think "Well, there's the thumbnail for this video!"
Of course!
no bro, dont leave any of that stuff plugged in.

That sounds 👌 dangerous!! I've had this happen with a retro tape deck as well. I think mine had mini tape reels. Your friend, Jeff.
reminded me of Mission Impossible......this tape will self destruct in 5 seconds........good luck!!!:)
Oh neat. I have one of these. Needs a new motor run capacitor and I should probably change the line cap before it smokes while I'm in there.

No Highs, No Lows, it must be Bose!
Those capacitors definitely “reformed” 😂
reshapedthatshit
On other brands or open reel recorders there is often a capacitor similar to the one that smoked fitted across the motor switch and that too can fail.
30 mins in cap blew ! Lol

You need some leader tape and a splicing block to apply it to save damaging the recording part of the tape. 😎
It might have to be loaded with tape their is a end of tape switch or sensor that shuts the transport off at tape end.
Next time could you please flap the lid on the reel to reel to make it look like the player is talking . You could give it a voice and persona you can be mr. Hands. That would be fun ! Thanks for posting!
I'm typing at the moment of the smoke, RIFA??!!
RIFA caps were notorious for failing in vintage Apple computers from the 80's and 90's. The folks who restore vintage PC's normally replace RIFA caps before powering up the systems. Besides RIFA caps, old tantalum caps would also pop.
Wow it works as it vomits smoke everywhere yeah it works great lol

I jumped when the magic smoke came out.
Tape tension switch before the heads
Death capacitor is specifically for ground hum issues put a .01 1000 volt mica capacitor
WOW! Boom!
@38:23 70s RIFA madness... I know you knew it.
episode of mission impossible
46:58 unfortunately that is not true what you say there. yes you can record about 12 hours of music at slow speed but slower speed sound quality is worse.
at 1 7/8 ips you got the worse freq. response (something about 50Hz - 8kHz), and at the fastest speed (that would be 7 1/2 ips) you'll got the best sound quality. frequency response will be wider (something about 40Hz - 18kHz), wider dynamic response, better signal-to-noise ratio etc...
of course you wouldn't hear some difference with it's internal speaker, I'm pretty sure not even with external speaker using this models amplifier, but if it has (and it should have) a line-out jack, then when you connect it to external amplifier you'll hear a huge difference when you record and play that recorded song(s) at different speeds
You bought Phelps' tape deck from Mission Impossible.
"I want to make it with you " is the name of the song (or close) by the group Bread 🍞, if I'm not mistaken. Again, your friend, Jeff.
Diary is the name of the song by Bread..I have all their records
A co-worker of mine said that her entire house burned down by an old stereo.
oops... thee magic smoke escaped...

BREAD 🍞 BEAUTIFUL
Capacitor pooped!😮
Must be a leak in the wires for that smoke to leak out.
There was no bang, more of a fizz.
When electrionics have been left for a very long time, to minimise an explosion risk, the power capacitors should be re formed.
Professionals have specialist re forming equipment, , but you can do it yourself.
Don't power it up fully all at once.
I have known people place an old fashioned 100 watt table lamp in series with the equipment to test.
(filament, not led)
Then, if nothing happens but the lamp lights full brightness, you have a load fault.
If the lamp lights dim and the equipment partially functions, things are fine, leave it a short while on low power.
Then, when you are confident, work it up to full power.
If you can't do this, just power it for a few seconds at a time, working up to minutes, over a good few days or even weeks.
NEVER power it fully and leave it on with your head stuck in the back, waiting to be blinded by bits of aluminium and boiling liquid.........
Wait... So what song was it Ronnie?
Bread "I Want To Make It With You"
Make it with you by bread
Oh yeah
I wanna make it with you. Not you Ron, The song.

Good job sussing it all out, even though you never used a tape deck before. Shouting out instructions didn't help.
It's pronounced "Tee-ack." Teac.
Up in smoke, dude.
