    Love watching you diagnose these old electronics. At work I've got a bunch of emergency exit lights with side spot lights, they are about 10 years old and the spot lights are starting to come on all the time. They should only come on during power outage. Long story short, Lithonia is no help, and there are no schematics available. I've been told replace the battery and if that doesn't work replace the unit. I decided to replace the 2 caps and they work correctly now. 😁

    X capacitors do not have many legitimate uses in these old sets as X safety caps are designed to fail into dead shorts. When used properly an X cap will be used in conjunction with a fuse so that if the capacitor fails the fuse or circuit breaker trips and then the entire circuit is "dead" to the user. With cross the line caps people online will tell you to use "safety caps" >because< they are worried about a normal cap shorting (not all caps will short when they fail) so choosing one that is designed to have that failure mode is a big no-no. Y-caps OTOH, are designed to short as "opens" and those are the ones you'll want for cross the line caps if deviating from the original circuit design for cross the line filtering. In circuit as a bypass cap, most of these sets will not care what kind of capacitor is employed as long as the value is ballpark close (wide margin of error). A lot of house calls back in the day were accomplished with just having .01, .05, and .1 caps to choose from in the tube caddy. Throw in whatever is closest to what was there and call it a day. Where cap values & types really need to be specific is in the front end (RF or OSC stages) where really-stable mica caps are often called for and where using something of the wrong type or value will cause the set to be unstable (the channel drifting across the dial and/or stations being in the wrong place).

    • @sgath92
      @sgath92 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Personally I loathe the idea of having any capacitor in front of the power switch and many of these old sets had cross the line caps right where the power cord enters the set & always subjected to current 24/7 if the set is left plugged in (even while off). This was done that way because it gives superior filtering to have the caps as close to the incoming AC as possible & the power switch is usually on the opposite side of the chassis near the knobs, but paranoid me is always thinking "gee what if one of these caps goes bad while I am asleep or away while that set is left plugged in but turned off?" I will sacrifice a little AC noise to move the across the line cap to right after the power switch. For similar, largely paranoia reasons, I will move the power switch on my AC/DC sets to the hot side of the power cord & use a polarized plug instead of having the switch on the neutral. People will say "but what if the outlet is wired backwards?" Well 1- you can get a $5 tester to verify that, and 2- I know this is not the case because I wired every outlet in the building myself to be sure and then threw testers on each one to double check my work. But then in doing all that I have basically redesigned what were originally UL listed devices so maybe that's not the best idea from a legal liability POV. Then again, I am not really concerned about that as I am not doing professional repairs and I just want to silent those nagging "what if" over thinking stuff my brain will do to me at 2-3am on a tuesday morning when I really should be sleeping. All that being said, damage from part failures in these sets has to be a truly rare thing. I've had stuff come across my bench where filter caps caused actual fires inside sets during their original service life decades ago and... aside from probably smelling bad when it happened in the 30s/40s and leaving dramatic carbon marks around the parts on the chassis, did not actually cause even the wooden cabinet to be defaced in any way. A most notable example was one of those corner-cabinet stromberg consoles I worked on once. Decades ago the filters went bad, burned down the power & output transformers, melted the rectifier, and left a chain reaction of damage....set was repaired by a radio shop who replaced the transformers & resocketted the rectifier to use whatever one they had on hand (probably a war time repair). To this day the chassis was covered in melted tar, smoke/ash deposits etc., but there was no trace of a problem left behind on the cabinet. With a bakelite cabinet the risk is probably even less as they made bakelite ashtrays because of how heat resistant the stuff is. But then, my overthinking would still kick in if I'm not careful.

    I always like to test the tubes before I do anything else when restoring a radio. I like to look for shorts and gas in the tubes which can cause serious problems to an otherwise restorable unit. I don't worry so much about emission or transconductance as the radio will tell you that. I've done enough radio restorations to know that 99 out 100 of the old paper caps are electrically leaky and need to be replaced along with some of the resistors that have gone out of tolerance. I have somewhere around 10,000 tubes and once in a while I have to buy a tube. The 12SQ7 and the 12AV6 are used in most AA5 and AA6 radios. Those 2 tubes along with 35Z5, 35W4, 35L6, 50L6, 35C5 and 50C5 are good tubes to keep in stock. Leaving the old caps in any piece of electronic equipment is just a ticking time bomb. I wouldn't worry about using the safety cap. If the radio works, who cares.

The radio I have was used as a stage prop by the drama department where I work at. They found another radio they liked better so they replaced it and gave me that one. It works good after doing a little work to it.

    I'm hoping someone who repairs clocks will appreciate this info/trivia: Clockmakers/repair personnel recently showed up in two different shows that I saw: Season 1 of the series "Grimm," features a (supernatural) character that repairs clocks/watches for a living; and of all people Shirley Temple starred in "The Terrible Clockman," where an evil sorcerer puts a spell on a town that stops time, and creates havoc with a recently built clock-man-turned-robot. (Story was based on a Jules Verne book).

    Ronnie probably already knows this, but for the benefit of new players to the clock repair community, for 8 day clocks you need to have the pendulum adjusted just a bit fast when it is fully wound as it will gradually slow down a bit as the spring expands. This is an iterative process, you make an adjustment, run it until the next rewind, adjust again until you get it where you want it. Most people rewind their 8 day clocks weekly, I rewind mine at 5 days to have less of a fast/slow run change. You could rewind daily to make it tighter, but that's a lot like work.
