- In Critical Role Campaign 3, before Travis played Chetney, he played Bertrand Bell. Episode 3 happened (SPOILERS) and Bertrand Bell (Travis Willingham) takes center stage. I go through the history & highlights of Sir Bertrand Bell starting with the post Campaign 1 one-shots -- the Search for Grog & The Search For Bob with Vox Machina, before a Campaign 3 Recap. I review Bertrand Bell's time with the group, his last words (Lieve'tel), and his tragic death. I then react to my thoughts about Bertrand as a character in Critical Role Campaign 3.
Bertrand Bell was my favorite character of these first 3 episodes of Critical Role Campaign 3, as he had many funny moments and highlights. Travis had a great character before Chetney the werewolf (Critical Role Campaign 3 Episode 11). I hope you enjoy this retrospective of Bertrand Bell's origins and life. This is truly a testament of Travis' acting capabilities as to make me care about a character in three episodes, and already feel bad for the old man that met an end that he did not deserve.
So true! It really got to me, especially having to watch the clips over and over while making the video. Travis did a fantastic job with Bert.

Bertrand was my favorite character in C3 (a campaign with some of my all time favorite characters), great moments with Travis doing the "old man" bit, I hope he can find a way to work that in future exploits he plays that character so well 😂

When Dorian tripped Bertrand, Travis missed a golden opportunity for a "I've fallen and I can't get up" joke.

the ability of Bert saying in the end that he did not always win made me feel for the character, he accepted he had flaws and made the end of this dumb hero quite sad.
It really did make it sad. Without that scene, it's just the comic relief that no one in the party really liked passing on. I think it really makes them come together.
Whats sadder for me was when he was talking with dorian.. Saying its finally looking up.. But he died soon after...

I thought Travis bringing him along was great. It allowed a character to direct the formation of a group and introduction of a "quest giver". He was a fun throwback to have while we waited for Travis's true character and he helped the story process. And Travis did just a great job, as usual.

Yea it screamed the whole "mentor that falls" feel
Bertrand kinda grew on me these last few episodes. He’s definitely a loser, with big appetite for glory and none the skill. But he’s also a good sport, kinda lonely, and genuinely excited for a new adventure. It’s kinda sad for someone like him who wanted recognition more than anything, to die drunk and alone, in a dark alleyway far from home. Kudos to Travis for making this annoying character so endearing.
Exactly! I loved him for his comedy, but he was a liar and loser. But with that last scene at the bar, Travis really made us all feel for him, and look forward to what would come of him, if he had some redemption left in him. And to take him away right after that moment was so brutal, and memorable.
I’ll miss the dynamic between Fern and Bert. I wish we could have gotten a few more episodes of him.
There would have been so many more amazing moments even if it was only a couple more episodes. So sad.
A real shame they won't have more opportunity to firmly establish Bert and Fearnie

Great storytelling here. I think Bert's death will really serve to deepen the group's investment in this story, as well as their determination to stay together as a team.

Maybe I could be wrong, but when I heard "Anger" I immediately thought of a tiefling. If it's not a nickname it sounds pretty much like a good name for tiefling and tbh I'd love to see Travis' idea for that kind of character.

Actually, it is plenty possible that they got his age correctly on both accounts but due to getting stuck on a different plane at some point after leaving the group he went through a time slip (the fey plane is known for things like that). It is also possible that he was given something that would slow/stop his age progression somehow or tons of other possibilites.

Bertrand was actually my favorite character so far in season three so his death was truly shocking and sad. Travis nailed this wonderful character.
He was mine too! Travis really did do a wonderful job with Bertand.
Yeah like I was literally saying to my self I don't like the characters of this season as much as the others. But hey at least we get a old man adventurer that will be cool (insert 5 minutes later slide here) and the alley scene happens.. Well at least I still have the robot.

I don't feel like Berty's death was railroaded by Matt or that they planned it before hand. I think that Travis knew his character was gonna die and tried to give Matt a poetic and thematic opportunity to do it thus the staying up and going for a walk. I think Matt had to catch up to Travis' plans rather than them planning it together
I don't think they talked about it beforehand, at all. That moment beforehand was an amazing roleplay, and setup by Travis. What I meant by railroaded was, I think Matt realized that moment and was very much in the mindset of "I will do this now".
A drunken night stroll is a perfect setup. Matt did say something to the extent of "you drunken asshole". I don't think Bertrand really had a chance of making it out alive. That's all I meant. A nat 20 by Matt didn't help Bertrand's chances, either.

@@CurrentKick Matt Mercer did say on Twitter that Travis wanted his actual Campaign 3 character to come in later so he reintroduced Bell so Travis can still be part of the group and lead them to join them together. Travis also agreed to have Bell meet a grim end but wouldn’t know when it would happen

Disagree. I thought it apparent in E1 that Bertrand was temporary due to the level difference between him, 5th, and the others, all 3rd. He was given NO CHANCE to survive in the alley, so clearly this was planned.
I have the feeling that the rest of the party will name the group after him, probably a pun or something using "Bell"

Bell spent some time in the Feywild with Lieve’tel. Not really, but just pointing out that in this fantasy world even time discontinuity is not necessarily an error
but perhaps unexplained.

I love how, Fresh Cut Grass was obviously designed to be humorous but helpful, but Bertie ended up drawing more humor while pulling us in. I also like how, in campaign 2 Caleb couldn't forget anything and Bertie couldn't remember.
Completely agree! F.C.G., I'm still warming up to. Bertrand really did crack me up, almost every time he spoke.
Good comparison to Caleb! That "Who are you?" from Bert, I watched that over and over, haha.

He deserved some of it, but yeah they all started to be really mean to Bertrand, a guy they only knew for 2 days.
And they did, for like ten minutes. Ashton didn’t even give Bert two seconds of respect, which is on brand for the character, but definitely felt bad watching it live.

Well I have news for you
Was kinda obvious he was meant to be temporary, i mean he regressed 13 levels so not really much you can do with him in the long run. Best case would have been that he would have been turned into a reoccuring npc but it feels like they made a good call with his death, raising the stakes and motivating the group to stick together. I think he was a fun character, perhaps even more suited for a bard then a fighter but...well he actually survived the trip to save grog and he shagged an elf cleric. Man lived the life.
I agree. Sad to see him go because Travis made him hilarious, but yeah, he was never meant to stay around long-term. I would have taken a few more episodes, though; would have been a few more memorable (comedic) moments, for sure.

I was honestly triggered by how badly he was treated the man walked the planes of pandemonium and battled a demigod.
I get he was sort of a braggart with "empty bravado" and deserved some of what was coming to him. But, I agree that the group really treated him poorly. I wonder if it would have been the same if he was around for a few more episodes.
I guess thats due to the group not knowing him... And could never known him more.. How he acted does sounds like someone who is all talk.. But maybe... MAYBE if he lived... He wouldve been like "i told you so" when it was revealed or something... Hes still loved tho... Very loved as that grandpa who is cool.. Whom you just know but immediately love

Greetings from India! I just started watching this show from Campaign 3 Episode 1 and I must say I am hooked. Wish D&D was more popular here - it looks like a fun game.
I am going to totally miss Sir Bertrand Bell. He was such a great addition that his departure saddened me to no end. Those younger rapscallions insulted and abused that poor old man so many times, but it seems like Sir Bertrand had it coming. Cant wait to see Travis' 'real' character for C3

The fact that he once was level 18, with 19 str and dex is still impressive, except if he was the man who took a wish card from grog deck of many things, and after wishing for being a lord, wished for battle skill
I really liked how they sent off his character. I didn't see him as a full PC anyway, more of a NPC with a wonderful actor to play the part. It was a smart way to involve Travis and get the party together with solid motivations.
The death itself you could almost see coming from a mile away with the way Bertrand was acting. It was a great example of a classic stereotype "this person 100% wont make it to the end of the episode"
Travis really laid it on thick giving out a lot of his gold, wisdom, stories, and letting himself feel happy in his final moments. And while he probably didn't know how he would die, he clearly knew he had to have his character go off and be alone. I also dont think a 80 yr old drunk man could strike first against a powerful rogue so him not even rolling initiative makes sense. The gamblers blade made it certain he couldn't save for his death and Matt was lucky enough to roll a 20, even though the dwarf seems to be able to attack 4 times in a round.
Not everything can be improv and it definitely shocked the cast enough. It created a good story that to me is what matters most. Im excited to meet Travis's true character!
Agreed! Travis' set up was fantastic. It really made his death that more impactful. I would have loved a few more episodes of Bertrand, because I know there would have been some comedic gold moments, but it was quite the sendoff.
Everyone knew it was coming, cast and viewers both. But no one knew exactly how and when and the role playing was excellent. It was a fitting death for one Sir Bertrand Bell, shame he didn't live to see that sunrise though.
And now his watch has ended.

It was pretty clear to see coming at the tavern. Just Bert's demeanor was so blatantly obvious from Travis, but I don't think Matt was really ready to kill the old fart yet. I think that's the context of the 'drunk asshole' line, but Travis laid it out so perfectly that it had to be done. Another case of the players beating the DM. Sadge
Yeah, a few others had commented about that. Travis just set it up so perfectly, Matt had to go for it then.

@@CurrentKick molly we knew for 24 episodes and we got to see him live. To shine and make an impact to make changes and we still see them....he left things better after he left.
But for bert we knew him for less time but it was his old man nature and loveable deminer. It's like losing an uncle or grandfather. You knew little or less about them than you wanted too, and lost the chance to find out more....if that makes sense.

The idea of Vax coming to ferry Bertrand to the other side is pretty sad, ngl.
I only met this character in campaign 3(I didn't watch previous campaignes yet) and I loved him for his funny behavior, and Travis played him amazingly. How Bertrand Bell almost fell asleep during conversation with Orym at 7:30 p.m. was hillarious. Thou I kinda spoiled that end to me by starting to watch this video. But still, I'll miss sir Bertrand Bell(at least I could see him in previous campaignes).

I only met him in Campaign 3 as well (I went back and watched those 2 one-shots for this video). He was my favorite character so far and I still feel the group really misses him for (surprisingly) his leadership. He will be missed!
I don't think it was scripted or railroaded. Travis knew he had to die at some point, he gave Matt the opportunity and Matt took it, but I doubt Travis knew for sure it was happening then and there.
As to group names, I'm hoping for The Bell's Ends. A nod to the old man AND tongue in cheek them being dirty.

If he was level 3 like everyone else, then this would have been q much bigger surprise for me. As soon as I saw L5, I knew he wasn't permanent. I hope Travis' next character shows off his comedy skills again, because I loved Bertrand and I loved Grog whilst I was a bit middling about Fjord. Travis is hilarious, and I like it when his characters are too
Completely agree about hoping Travis shows off comedy with his main C3 character. Coming in really only knowing Fjord, I had no idea how funny he was!

@@Cowboy.underwater Grog was really the only character I knew anything about C1 and that was only slightly. Watching these 1 shots, they all seem great.
I only recently started getting into CR again, (started with C2) so I didn't even know that Bertrand was a throwback character. I was constantly being surprised as to why the entire party seems to be bullying him.
Usually I just listen to the episodes absentmindedly while in transit. And let me tell you, Travis did a heck of a job with this character - scenes with Bert are basically the only ones that stuck out to me out of the first three episodes.
Bertrand was great. So far Chetney is funny as all hell and I'm excited to see where it goes

It may have been planned, but I hesitate to call it "railroaded." That has a lot of connotations that don't apply.
I kinda did hope Bertrand was going to stick around. He was a great character, and even though he was a braggard, he did have a ton of experience. It would have been kinda fun to see this old con man doling out knowledge and lies in equal measures. Plus, the biggest reason Bertrand was less than useful was bad luck on the dice rolls. Trying to add fuel to the fire on Esteros would have been useful if he had hit. And several other checks went about as well.
However. His departure, even though it was planned at some point, was still handled with grace, tact, and (most importantly) didn't break the narrative. It'll be interesting to see what this does to the group.
I agree, a few others have mentioned that as well; "Railroaded" was a poor phrase used for what I was trying to explain. What I was trying to point out was that, I believe Matt saw Travis' set up (the bar scene, then the drunken stroll), and decided 'I will kill off Bertrand now'.
Granted, Matt did roll a natural 20 on one of the attacks, but I don't think there was really any intention of letting Bertrand leave that alley. I definitely don't think it was scripted or talked about beforehand. I just saw the whole thing coming a mile away. But I agree, it was handled perfectly.
I really was hoping we had a few more episodes (at least) of Bertrand around. It would have been interesting to see if his personality changed a bit, since he seemed much happier. Plus, every episode he had a few hilariously, memorable scenes. It would have been nice to have a few more of those.
Sir Bertrand Bell,, is my favorite character that Travis has played yet, I'll admit I wasn't a big fan of Grog or fjord. Fact is ,, Sir Bertrand Bell was my favorite of campaign 3 so far.
He was my favorite of C3 so far! I loved Fjord, but haven't seen much of C1 for an opinion on Grog.

I never watched Bertrand in the previous one shot, but from what i saw in this campaign thus far i really fell in love with him. I compare him to a grandpa who tells outrages tells from his youth, just so he can be seen as a hero or someone who was so brave, even though it wasn't the truth. I found him genuinely relatable in a way because of that, we all want recognition in some way like that. All around a very well intentioned guy for the most part. Even though he sort of deserved some of the bullying the rest of the group gave him, I still felt sorry for him.
He was my favorite character, I really wish he had at least a few more episodes with the group. I agree about how they treated him too, he deserved a lot of it, but I started to feel bad for him.

PREDICTION!!!!! In the Halloween Episode Fearne asked Bell if he had any kids, and Bell responded "Not that I know of" Now, what if Travis' next character is the child or grandchild OF Sir Bertrand Bell?!?!?!

I haven't seen his actual first appearance in the previous campaign/one-shot, but I loved Bertrand the moment he was introduced in C3. I'm still so bummed that he's dead.
I'm bummed still, too! I wish he was even around for a couple more episodes. We would have had so many more memorable moments. Maybe we'll get a (younger) Bertand one- shot at some point.

I very much enjoyed the pc/npc Bertrand since he was first introduced.. he added a different kind of leivity that was a bit lacking. His glory days gone, a task well done, content in the end by passing on as a “warrior” he will be missed.

I mean in that fight it was to show their strength and it was 8 on 1 then, also really old. H e certainly is a blow hard but does have power his own, even a bit in his old age

Ok so I’m pretty sure out of game Matt and Travis planned it, but you could theorize that in game there is a chance it is because Imogen used Bertrand’s name in the tavern and that’s why the dwarf was able to find him, I mean in d&d there are ways of finding people for spellcasters that are even easier if you know their name, it’s just a theory but it could make sense why he was the one who was targeted, that and he was the only one who was completely alone when he went out for his walk
Good theory! I sort of was just going with, Dugger was tailing them since the battle and waited his chance to find one of them by themselves, and he got Bertrand's name because Dorian yelled at Bertrand when he ran into darkness...and stabbed him, lol.

I anticipated his death tbh, I figured he'd just be a character there to bring the group together. My plot twist prediction is that Bell's reincarnated by accident instead of revived properly, becoming Travis' new character with the same connections to the party.
That would be a nice twist!
I have a feeling that the exandria characters and Bertrand are stand-ins to weave together a more complex story.
I thought that too, until I saw the tweet from Matt about Ashley & Liam using ExU to "play test" their C3 characters. I think they're here to stay, but definitely fun to speculate.
Headcannon for the age discrepancy: Bertrand was obviously trying to make a comeback before Campaign 3, and rejuvinating magic does exist. Could be possible he tried to seek some out.

I think Bertrand’s age discrepancy is actually due to magic. There’s many ways to stop or reverse aging in D&D. And let’s not forget that Lieve’tel was a level 18 cleric with insanely powerful magic that had already been interested in Bell... obviously we will probably get more into the past of Bertrand as C3 continues, but it probably does have an answer.

Oh, also Bertrand went from at least level 18 to 5 in the past 30 years. Which is incredibly suspicious because he’s not level 3 like the rest of the players. (Obviously he had to go down to match the rest of the party for the start of C3) But why level 5 and not 3??? Aaand Travis really pushed The Bevy name before he went to go die... honestly I think that’s more to do with where his actual character is but nevertheless Bertrand is involved in the plot further
@@itzolie I really hope there is more Bertrand in the plot and we get more information about him. I'm guessing someone is sent to investigate once his body arrives. I would love a one-shot with one of Bertrands adventures that happen in those 30 years.

so heres my crazy idea, and this would be epic, they are shipping berts body back to whitestone, right, well pyke, keylieth, or hell liev tel could all cast resurrect on him. what if that happens, and somehow bert is brought back in his 40s i know thats not how the spell works, but just go with it, then he rejoins the group as his younger self! that would be epic. i know thats not how its going to happen, but still. With spells like true resurrection being able to build a new body, i dont see why some crazy thing like this couldnt happen. hell i was in a campaign once where i was playing the great grandson of a former character id played, and we found someone to resurrect my great grandad and he was a totally different race, so who knows
That would be epic! It was one of my theories I had floating around (before he died), I was thinking he somehow reversed his age so he could start compiling real feats instead of....some, most likely, fake ones (Werewolf, Hippogriff, etc.).
Called it at Episode 1, when we learned that Bertrand had the Extra Attack feature (revealing he was level 5), that he would be a temporary character. It was a bit predictable, but not entirely unwelcome.
I loved how Travis played BB. Can't wait to see what he comes up with for his new PC.

@@CurrentKick yeah he's quite hateable most of the time, an old man stuck in his past, failing to pretend he's a wise, cool mentor figure but in some rare moments is very touching. He tries very hard to fit in but just never seems to be able to.
I just hope their group will unironically call themselves "Bertrands Bells" now.
I felt like thats what he intended when he kept going on about how thats totally their groups name right before he died.
On the other hand there are likely hundreds of better names, but this one would be silly, recognizable and carry some meaning

Not gonna lie, felt this waaay more then wjen Molly passed.
Same for me! That last moment with Bert when he drank, I think really worked magic for everyone as Bertrand seemed happy that he had a new group, and maybe even friends. He seemed at peace with his life for the first time in a while. Having our hearts ripped out right after that was pretty magical storytelling and roleplaying. Matt and Travis really were awesome with those moments.

I dislike this scripted death a whole lot. Especially given how good Travis was at playing a senile old geezer (and I personally think there is a lot of comedy potential when RPing an older, weaker character).
This also could've been a redemption arc for BB and his mythomania. Overall, I'm saddened and somewhat disappointed but this just speak of how brilliant Travis/CR is. I'll miss these old geezer jokes/jabs, the sleepiness and BB throwing his back every other action etc...
I thought we'd have Bertrand around for a bit more. Travis was really doing an amazing job with him. And yeah, I agree it could have been a nice redemption arc set up. Hopefully his main character will have be funny as well. Bertrand had me cracking up each episode.
Tbf it was planned ahead of time. Idk if this exact moment was but we've seen them improv brilliantly. Travis may have been teasing Matt to kill him off already and didn't realise Matt would do it, or Travis wanted to retire Bell so he gave the opportunity to Matt on a silver platter. Another consideration for me was that this party didn't feel very in tune yet. Alot were hestitant to do something, no clear leader so far or someone who was motivated enough to lead. This end for Bell might nudge Imogen to lead more because she saw the death herself, or maybe even Dorian/Orym for feeling responsible.
