- The UFO starfighter seat paired with the forward controls make for a comfortable ride. The aftermarket Delkevic pipes are loud and deep (listen to the video on a good sound system if you can. When I pump this video through my home stereo, it sounds like the bike is in the room with me). The 1200cc, DOHC, liquid cooled, V-4 powerplant is bone stock, bulletproof, and fast as hell. Thanks for all the kind words. I never imagined there would be this kind of response when I posted this. For all the people who are interested in the aftermarket parts that I've installed. Slip on pipes are: Delkevic Mini 8" Carbon Fiber Round Muffler to fit VMX1200 V-MAX. I previously posted a link to the forward controls, but it expired because it is a listing on ebay. Here is a current link, www.ebay.com/i... not sure how long it will last. If link is dead, easiest way to find em is to search google for: FC9 14" Forward Controls for 1985-2007 Yamaha V-Max 1200 Star VMax. The seller's name is "refinedcyclelc". Bought the scoops, and had the seat done at Planetvmax UFO Performance. Unfortunately, the owner of UFO Performance Jon Cornell, passed away in 2013, and the store closed shortly thereafter. Thanks again for the interest and keep an eye on those ditches!
No other bike than a vmax can sound that nice, like a small block V8 w/ headers 🚀

The bike has my heart pounding. Beautiful with perfect mods. Next week I’m going to look at a 1985 with 11,000 original miles I hope to be bringing it home!!!
Update: I now have a dark red metallic 1985 Vmax 1200 with 11,000 original miles and in extremely good condition it looks brand new.. i’m doing all the work on it myself and I changed the spark plugs the fuel filter the oil the final drive fluid the coolant,the brake n clutch fluid. I installed a new front tire and a new rear tire. I went with a 170 instead of the original 150. I love this bike!!!
The old V-Max is one of the best looking, toughest looking bikes ever made.
Other than the fake scoops, a cool looking bike. At least they aren't chrome on this bike and don't stand out like a pair of sore thumbs!

Yours is probably my favourite so far. Love the mods. Had a 2001 Carbon edition a few years back. This Saturday I’m picking up a 2005 anniversary edition.

I love VMAX. My friend stole one when we were teenagers. We were going out look for cops to chase us at night. We kept that 1986 VMAX for over 1 year. Cops just couldnt catch us. In 1988 I was 17 and I was riding that VMAX like it was stolen. Cool part was he showed me the first time how the front wheel can be kept on ground , thar front wheel stays down when you know how to handle the rpms. It did not come to life till 8000 or 9000 rpm it was mental sound when you open her up. .what a rush. I'm lucky to still be alive after those wicked chases. .oh to be young and foolish again

No it really doesn't at all. I have had a VMax for about 12 years and the last 4 years with forward controls. Much more comfortable. I also have A Ducati XDiavel and love those forward controls so changeup the VMax. if your knees are beat up playing sports you really appreciate the stretch and comfort and since these aren't sport bikes no real performance issues...

I love the bike and the foot controls/foot rest looks to be awesome as well. I don't like the position of the pegs on 2001 V Max and I'm looking to change them to something more comfortable. What brand did you use? I appreciate some suggestions on what you recommend?
Wish I could find out the same info! I'd love to change out the factory pegs and go with this similar setup of floorboards
I love this bike but the sport bike style (underneath you) foot pegs are a massive turn off.
I've seen highway bars be added up front but this is the first time seeing actually permanent forward controls. I need it. 🥲

Bike looks great! How's the cornering on it? Debating on switching from an M109R to this. I'm looking for a cruiser/sportbike feel - do you think this fits the bill? Thanks!
These bikes arent known for their cornering abilities. The Vmax is all about straight line acceleration. With the pegs in the stock position it's gonna have more of that sportbike/cruiser feel. With the forward controls, and starfighter seat, it moves the needle more toward cruiser. I love the look of the 109, I came real close to buying one before I got my max.

how do you like the forward controls? I hated my forward controls on my sportster 1200. just got a vmax and wondering if these will be better.
I love em. Between the seat and forward controls, much more of a cruiser feel.

I don't know if the 1985 first-year is a good bike to pick up for my first Vmax, but I found a very low production 1985 for sale. I just don't want to bike that's going to have to be having a mechanic see it every so often. I like reliability. Are these bikes reliable. 1985?
Where did you get the side scoops with butterflies at?
scoops from UFO performance (out of business now) made the butterflies myself.

I dont think theres much to it, however mine did not come with instructions. I wanted it done right, so I took it to the nice folks at Action Sports. greenville Mi.

Kinda pricey, but IMHO, worth every penny. Combo of the starfighter seat and forward controls make it a completely different ride.

I am in great need to know where the hell did you find the side intakes fkn great find. please RSVP. as well the side panels I have a 2002 carbonfiber addition VMAX and would love these upgrades.
Those are Vmax 1700 intakes and they look ugly here, original fits much better.

because the fuel pump/tank is under the seat where the frame gets chopped on a bobber. need to relocate the whole assembly and there isn't any other place to put it!!

Hey man I’m looking for forward controls for an 86. Where did you get yours and is it comfortable to ride?
I got mine on eBay and they are very very comfortable to ride.

A very good friend of mine had a 92(?) Vmax and put on some aftermarket TBR pipes. He didn't jet it and it ran ok. However, after me pressuring him to rejet to get rid of some deceleration popping he was shocked. Jetting after pipes WILL give you more power. You don't have to do it, but it is the right thing to do and a tasty way to do it.

one thing i dislike on this bike, the way its looks from the side..it looks the front weel is to close to the bike and makes her look to stumpy :(
